Orlando Sanchez

Sounds like a very solid prospect. He's a JC AA and we need size desperately. It's only a 2 year investment, so no downside here. He has offers from solid programs. I also don't think he'll scare off any of our other prospects. We only have 1 PF/C right now. We'd need a lot more depth to scare anybody off.

Not trying to question you but where did you see JC AA listings?

Kid's bio at the Monroe College site notes that he made Honorable Mention All American last year after averaging 11.8 rebs and 4.3 blocks. http://monroecollegemustangs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=519&path=mbball

nice he grew another inch already :) hopefully if we get him he wont wind up shrinking to 6'6 like some of our other players

garcia is number 9

Correct. Orlando Sanchez is #12. A lot more mobile than I suspected. Runs the court like a wing. Can't tell too much because this is run like any other all-star game, but he's good with the ball in his hands and certainly not a stiff.  I'd take him any day to add size and athleticism up front.

Under Lav our players seem to grow. Mo was listed at 6'6 or 6'7 consistently and then shows up at a legit 6'8.5. Garrett was 6'5 or 6'6 in many listing and is now 6'6 or 6'7.

A 6'6 Norm recruit would show up closer to 6'3!

Yes, Cal coached him and passed on him, but that doesn't say much because Cal can get anyone he wants. Impressive game from Sanchez. He really handled himself with some serious talent. Interesting they had him playing SF. Mobile kid for sure, but not a back to the basket big like we really need. He's a poor man's Sampson.

What do you mean 'passed on him'

Just googled him and found this article from early February from a Providence site:

Providence continues to remain very much in the running for the services of Monroe (N.Y.) College sophomore Orlando Sanchez, a 6-9-multifasceted talent who’s also being courted by several additional Big East schools. Reached over the weekend, Mustangs head coach Jeff Brustad stated that the Friars “have done an excellent job in terms of being visible and interacting with him when they come to games. Orlando definitely knows who they are and I would say (PC) would have to be in his top five. PC has the need for some frontcourt help so it may be a good fit.”
Regarded in several circles as the nation’s top JUCO big man, Sanchez came to Monroe in 2010 through a recommendation Brustad received from a basketball contact in the Dominican Republic. His first season stateside saw him pull down nearly 12 rebounds and block 4.2 shots, numbers that Brustad noted opened the door to a recruiting rumble that hasn’t cooled off this season.
While it’s easy to look at those numbers and envision Sanchez as someone who can anchor the interior, Brustad notes that there’s more to his game. “He’s a stretch four (power forward) who’s a high level athlete and can run the floor very, very well. He can shoot and is extremely mobile. He’s a well rounded player but can rebound and block shots very well.”
The Monroe coach said that Sanchez could probably make a decision now, but given his lack of familiarity with the U.S., Brustad believes that it behooves his player to hold off until after the season. Cincinnati, West Virginia, St. John’s and Mississippi State have also expressed strong interest.
“It was in his best interest to not give out his number and not deal with any official visits like that,” Brustad said. “We’ll save that for the end of March and beginning of April.”
Brustad added that Providence has also shown interest in another one of his players in 6-8 freshman Maurice Ndour via Senegal. “Everyone who’s come to see Orlando also likes Maurice.”

It would be interesting to find out if Lavin is also looking at Ndour and if so would it benefit us to sign Sanchez.

Ndour is 2013 and pretty sure he barely got burn this year at Monroe.

Bumping this thread because I just got a chance to watch his highlight film. I didn't realize how athletic this kid was. He would be a nice piece in the frontcourt. Would be quite happy with Orlando joining this team.

He's an enigma to me. He really does flash guard skills at 6'9...looks athletic as hell. How is he only putting up 10 ppg against Region 15 competition? I understand that Monroe has two very, very good guards that dominate the action, but this kid really needs to be dominating his competition more. His video playing for the Dominican was damn impressive. I wonder why his Domincan team coach, Calipari, isn't after him with possibly only one returning player (Wiltjer) that played more than 2 minutes per game, and as many as EIGHT scholarships to hand out?
