Orlando Sanchez

There is no worse combination than Jets/Mets/Knicks/Isles/Red Storm fans. Unfortunately I am one of them. 0 championships, and WAY too many close calls only to fall short over and over. These franchises all seem snake bitten except for the Knicks right now (finally). New York sports was at its peak in the late 60's, the mid 80's, and the 90's. Now the Jets are an absolute circus, the Isles are moving to BK but have somehow managed to keep losing season after season despite top draft picks, the Mets are a complete mess and hopefully Sandy knows what he's doing, and SJ is severely underachieving. At some point one of these franchises has to break through...it's been too long. It's very rare to see a truly dominant New York team anymore in any sport...the closest you can come is the Yankees who are old and not dominant like they were in the late 90's. The Giants have been great, but barely snuck in the playoffs each time to go on miracle runs to win the 2 SB's. They weren't dominant in the regular season. Would be nice to see a NY team really break out and be a top 3 team in either sport.

I feel like we need to start recruiting kids with ONE major skill. One finely tuned bonafide skill. Be it 3 pt shooting (like Marco), rebounding (Love type), pure shooter (Curry type), defense (Shumpert type), and inside scorer (Chandler/Harden type). It seems like we have assembled a lot of guys who are "pretty good all around" but not great in any one area except Marco. We need to start going for the skill players rather than the overall athletic ones. For example, I would not recruit a guy like Garrett when I know he already signed a million dollar contract with the Reds. Basketball should be their #1 focus, and I would recruit based on pure skills. You can always have a few overall jack of all trade types coming off the bench, but we need proven players playing in their natural position where they excel.

Those of us old Celtic fans who witnessed most of their championship runs are steeped in the specialist model and have disdain for the everybody does everything approach that we associate with Alex Hannum, Chamberlin's coach before he was traded to the 76ers. I have mentioned my impression that Lavin's UCLA teams always seemed to be less than the sum of their parts. I am most impressed by smart point guards and players who will take the pounding necessary to space the floor to give their team an advantage, box out, set picks, do the pounding that fatigues opposing scorers late in the game. Other than Auerbach, Lapchick was the master of organizing a team so that the right guy got the right shot with room at crunch time and the opposition never could get to their spots. We showed some of that in our 2010 NCAA team and who knows what happens without DJ's injury. Both Gift and Chris Jones have the physical strength to bang but it also involves attitude and know-how. Sanchez might be part of the answer if that ever happens. We have specialists on our team. Imagine the dismay in an opponent when they are not sure if the double screen being set by two very aggressive bigs is for Marco or DLo and one of the bigs is Jakarr who may roill toward the basket as our shooter goes behind the second screen. Takes time, work, attitude and coaching and we shall see.

He tells us nothing---on these message boards, twitter, or anywhere else---about the contacts that he has with potential recruits. He doesn't keep us informed of what the kids are telling him about their intentions. We're supposed to just sit back and wait for success that may never come.

Come on, Coach! You can do better than that!

It would be an NCAA violation for Lavin (or any coach), to talk about recruits who have not committed. We'd be hit with sancations (likely postseason and scholarship losses) if he did.

So, I hope he does keep quiet!

Simplyred's post was in jest.

Thanks for clearing that up. You can never be too sure on these boards. My apologies to him.

Using that logic, you would have passed on Dave DeBusschere, or two sport guys such as Bo Jackson (all star and all pro), and Deion Sanders. This team basically lacks a take charge of a game talent or two who delivers in crunch time, and a huge talent big forward or center. It also lacks experience.

And how often does Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan, or Deion Sanders come around? Once in a blue moon. I watch other teams and they just seem to have a lot more skill players instead of generally athletic players.

Another mention on twitter today by Adam Zagoria. I do not believe link was updated.

Neither Lawrence or Jordan have us as their #1 school and two losing seasons in a row may be too much for Lavin's enormous ego to take.

Wow, you have inside info or just make it up as you go along.

you don't need "inside information" to follow today's recruits that use Twitter to tell you their every bowel movement or sources that tell you where they are leaning. If you do not think I want Lav to snag these two you are nuts!
I do not believe everything players and their handlers release because I know they use it as leverage with the recruiting schools.
Jordan: "Temple is "home" to me". After Temple beat Syracuse, his opinion did not decrease.
Lawrence? Three years at Cardozo and it's history of not sending players down to Union Turnpike (any guesses) and having been on campus more than any recruit in recent memory, without ever indicating we "lead" does not take Sherlock Holmes. That he left Cardozo was actuallly a position in our favor.
If I wanted to make stuff up, I would publish on BEB with the ying and yang team. If I wanted to make stuff up I would publish under my other screen name on JJ and join ranks with Marco Baldi.
I am using negativity to keep me grounded in our reality.
Unlike others, I want to be surprised with success, both this year and next.

No need to use negativity to psyche out yourself. Reality are facts, and death and taxes. Until the season is over and the dust has settled, then we're not sure what this season will have in store. There is a strong, likelihood that we continue to play with inconsistency, but it isn't reality.

Like I stated several days ago.... I spoke with someone who has access to Jordan's situation, and Temple wasn't in the lead, as you seem to believe. Things can change, as they tend to do, with these kids. As, of last week that wasn't the case.

I can't speak on Lawrence's situation. I don't know who's the perceived leader for him. I know a few months ago that his mom was fond of the staff.

Once again, it doesn't matter who's leading (although, we all like to hear our team is leading the pack for a recruit) until they commit, and ultimately, sign their name on the dotted line.

MJ, I agree it does not matter who is the perceived leader until a prospect actually signs an LOI. However, when you only have two kids you are pursuing with any intensity and the kids are waiting for the Spring signing period, it means there is no clear leader and that is what I based my opinion on......the majority of kids commit by the Fall because they know their preference and want to focus on school and becoming eligible. There are very few "blanks" left next to the top 50 players regarding their school of chioce as of today.
The best case scenario will be we do not lose Sampson and Harrison AND sign Lawrence and Jordan. The nightmare begins if we lose the two and not sign the 2 prospects. Then we are left with sleepers and mystery recruits. Sound familiar?

We're amongst a small group of schools in the race for two blue-chippers. That is all you can ask for at the moment. There is always the possibility we can lose out on one, if not both of these kids. You can't lose out on either one of 'em, if you're not in it. The reality is we are amongst the leaders for Jordan (if not the actual leader) and Lawrence, respectively.

True, but when we hired Lavin some of us felt his recruiting skill would lead to one or two five star possibilities. While we show disdain for all things Syracuse, they continue to stock with that level player and still take common recruits at will. They are our major competitor, along with Uconn, for area recruits. Even the prospect of less playing time at Uconn for a Kenton Facey did not sway him in our direction.
If Harrison bolts, even with Jordan signing, we are back to having an unproven frosh to play major minutes and that frosh is only ranked # 66 of the handful of remaining available recruits in the nation. No if, ands, or buts, Lawrence is a must get...period!
Lavin is involved with a small handful of sub-90 rated 2014 players but certainly none in the top 25 as yet.
In year three we are nowhere near the level of players Lavin recruited and signed while at UCLA and miles and miles away from our major NY competitor, Syracuse.
Bottom line is we need players to stay 3-4 years and with the Big East imploding weekly and our future murky, there are no longer guarantees of returning to the elite level of the 80's and without that possibility or at least hope thereof, our future at MSG, our biggest recruiting ace in the hole, will be in question.
Regardless of what others think about him, our lack of an offer to Calipari a few years ago when he was at Memphis may have been the turning point in the level of recruit we could attract.
At that stage, Cal was a millionaire many times over and wanted the challenge of SJ and NYC.
Hey, water under the bridge, no?
Get the players, get them early, lock-em up early and teach them defense.......an old Boeheim strategy that has worked for him to this day.
Get to work staff. LOL!!

72, you are completely wrong on the offer to Calipari. It was written up approved etc. Then Looie threatened to walk away from the University and put the kabosh to the offer. It's that simple. Loyalty to Looie killed Calipari being coach. Which way would you want it?

Ah, the Looie kibosh! Stuff of myth and legend! Looie got a pass with Brian Mahoney....likely the worst x and o coach in redmen history.
Not sure of your definition of an offer, but I never heard that St. John's actually tendered Cal an offer for him to accept or refuse. I am not sure if it ever got beyond the boardroom to Cal and the hiring of coaches from Mahoney, Fran, Jarvis, Norm all have Looie in the mythical loop but the President and athletic director, with close consult with the big donors, always make the final decision. To lay the blame on an 80 year old former coach is a cop-out.
Matt D had the backing and funding of one of SJ's biggest donors. Our AD (AD's) have failed us over the past 20 years.......it was their decision and the President gave the final vote.
I will defer to the Maven if Cal actually had a written offer in hand but if he did, not giving him the opportunity to accept or reject would have to rival the demise of the Big East in college sports blunders.

Am I the only guy who checks this board EVERY morning hoping to see a thread that this kid is cleared to play-- I check every day.

You're in the wrong thread...This is the Orlando Sanchez thread...

:)

I don't think he got an offer, but I remember a post by Maven's son where he stated that Cal was in his living room and he asked him to his face whether he would have taken the job and he said Cal said yes.

Shouldn't be a shock considering there's nothing Orlando related to talk about.

Gotcha, I thought I messed up for a second and Orlando wasn't his first name. Regardless the NCAA is a complete joke, make a ruling already.

In the case of Orlando, NCAA stands for:

No Concrete Answer Awaits

or

Never Communicate Anything Abruptly

mavin said back in the day cal had an offer...but it was pulled by father harrington.
It doesn't matter anyway since, in the long run, we finally hired a brand-name coach who can attract attention. Had he not taken ill perhaps our situation would have changed drastically and we would be more stable player-wise. Not that we may have been more stable player-wise with Cal, but I will take 2 1and done kids every year rather than lose a recruit to Syracuse or Uconn year in-year-out!
Hammer-to-Rock!
