Let's imagine not having Sampson, G.G. and Harrison next year. Does that mean we have to successfully recruit Lawrence? Otherwise, it leaves us Obepka as our only rebounder. Maybe redshirting G.G. is not as bad as we feel right now.
Well Jack, let us assume that.......who, other than Lavin himself, decided to take the year off recruiting for 2013??
All but two 2013 players we targeted are going elsewhere and the two remaining may be giving us lip service for all we know. What Juco all-Americans have we targeted? What other serviceable bigs?
What is unimaginable is a team comprised of Garrett, Pointer, Greene, Gift, Obekpa and Branch with Hooper and Frenchie as our "experienced" team in year 4. Someone tell me where the points will come from? That would not be a 20 win NCAA team IMO. That would resemble a Norm Roberts team without a Hardy, Kennedy, Burrell, Horne or, bite my tongue, Sean Evans. This year we may be offensively challenged and defensively non-existent. Next year, without key recruits and minus Sampson, Harrison and the invisible Sanchez, we could be a feather duster once again.
If we were only able to be a peacock with Norm's players, you can pencil in Cluess and Singleton in the staff roster in 2014-15.
Why the doom and gloom? Because we have yet to prove we can coach these "athletes" and actually keep them. Neither Lawrence or Jordan have us as their #1 school and two losing seasons in a row may be too much for Lavin's enormous ego to take. You can only try to rekindle the fan base so many times. Another entire generation of St. John's fans will have been subjected to mediocre basketball over 20 years and do not have a "winning tradition" to keep them hopeful. If Xavier and Butler do not see a vibrant St. John's and Villanova in the horizon, and they do not join the "Cathoic League", the new league will be MAAC level at best.
Lavin needs to keep the foot on the accelerator and not slow down like we seem to be doing this year.
I am hoping Lavin. Surprises us.
