Orlando Sanchez

It's a complete travesty what they are doing with Orlando Sanchez

It would be nice to see some in the media calling out the NCAA and drawing more attention to this

I think you guys are reading this wrong.

I don't presume he's eligible. They haven't ruled on him because they're giving Orlando/SJU the opportunity to explain reasons that would otherwise make him inelligible (previously attending secondary school, playing for a semi-pro team) whatever it might be.

This is just my reading of the situation, but it would fit in with what we've heard. He's supposedly been submitting paperwork from things he did in the DR and his parents death certificates even; you don't send that stuff in unless you're otherwise inelligible and trying to prove they should make an exception for you.

Again, just my two cents. But if they still haven't ruled on you by now I think you're presumptively not cleared.

D80, Im thinking along the same lines. Be easy to rule he can't play, but giving him extended time to show he should be ruled eligible. They would be leaving themselves open to ridicule if they were just sleeping on his case. Maybe they're being good about it. Thing is it's up to O to decide if there is other stuff he would want to get on with.

don't see him next to gg or max on the bench...not an away game as an excuse

I believe they let him go home early for the Christmas holiday.

Few people in the DR have ever heard of Felipe Lopez

Can you please provide more details about this poll you apparently conducted in the Dominican Republic?

Last time I was in Santo Domingo I ran several focus groups and was startled to find that few people had ever heard of Felipe Lopez.

It's possible that the results were skewed, however, given that my focus groups were comprised primarily of subjects who had never heard of St. John's.

It's quite likely, however, that the folks in the DR who maintain Sanchez' records are familiar with Felipe Lopez. I was recently in Toronto wearing a St. John's t-shirt and I couldn't walk more than a block without people accosting me to revel in the glorious career that was Colin Charles.

I live in S FL. Went to see SJU play Miami when Felipe was on the team. There were a lot of DR flags, shirts.

That was nearly 20 years ago. I may be wrong but I was under the impression that Felipe had a strong following among Dominican Americans when he played. Not sure whether that translated to folks who actually live in the dr. In any event, my point was that the average Dominican today has no idea who Felipe Lopez is.

This was pretty damn funny!

Someone convince me Lavin and staff did not know his age two months ago! Funny how we hedge our entire season around one Juco transfer and decide to "gamble" and sit our best rebounder........in the brutal Big East! This is not the "Catholic 7" yet!
If we paid a speech professor $1 million + and he decides to sit the best debater on the team prior to the "big debates" his "motives" might be questioned.

I have been saying this since the first game. Lavin's decision to redshirt Gift makes zero sense. Particularly in light of the fact that it was apparent after two games (and should have been apparent to the staff after several practices) that Christian Jones was not prepared to contribute (cannot believe all the bluster from Lavin about Jones and now the kid is getting barely five minutes a game). Even if Sanchez were declared eligible, Lavin could have found at least a few minutes for Gift each game. And if not, oh well. Play your best players.

Unfortunately, it's too late to play Gift -- it wouldn't be fair to play him now after he's already missed 40% of the season. Unless there is more to the Gift situation then we know, the decision to redshirt him is a real head scratcher.

Let's imagine not having Sampson, G.G. and Harrison next year. Does that mean we have to successfully recruit Lawrence? Otherwise, it leaves us Obepka as our only rebounder. Maybe redshirting G.G. is not as bad as we feel right now.

Jack, it was presumptuous to have thought that you could "save" GG for next year, when the cupboard might be barer, when you have this year to play. What about this year?

Miscalculation by the staff, but it is what it is.

This team has more than enough players to be very competitive. Let's hope that they step it up and raise a few eyebrows in the second half.

The biggest hole is the failure to rebound effectively. If that improves, I believe that the team will win its share of games, and be a team that no one wants to play come February/March.

Gift would not the answer to our current problems. He averaged 5.6 rebounds a game last season. If you want to complain about something, complain about Jones being brought in when the staff should have been looking for another big juco or a grad school-eligible transfer with a history of at least trying to grab a board.

Well Jack, let us assume that.......who, other than Lavin himself, decided to take the year off recruiting for 2013??
All but two 2013 players we targeted are going elsewhere and the two remaining may be giving us lip service for all we know. What Juco all-Americans have we targeted? What other serviceable bigs?
What is unimaginable is a team comprised of Garrett, Pointer, Greene, Gift, Obekpa and Branch with Hooper and Frenchie as our "experienced" team in year 4. Someone tell me where the points will come from? That would not be a 20 win NCAA team IMO. That would resemble a Norm Roberts team without a Hardy, Kennedy, Burrell, Horne or, bite my tongue, Sean Evans. This year we may be offensively challenged and defensively non-existent. Next year, without key recruits and minus Sampson, Harrison and the invisible Sanchez, we could be a feather duster once again.
If we were only able to be a peacock with Norm's players, you can pencil in Cluess and Singleton in the staff roster in 2014-15.
Why the doom and gloom? Because we have yet to prove we can coach these "athletes" and actually keep them. Neither Lawrence or Jordan have us as their #1 school and two losing seasons in a row may be too much for Lavin's enormous ego to take. You can only try to rekindle the fan base so many times. Another entire generation of St. John's fans will have been subjected to mediocre basketball over 20 years and do not have a "winning tradition" to keep them hopeful. If Xavier and Butler do not see a vibrant St. John's and Villanova in the horizon, and they do not join the "Cathoic League", the new league will be MAAC level at best.
Lavin needs to keep the foot on the accelerator and not slow down like we seem to be doing this year.
I am hoping Lavin. Surprises us.
