Btw, who was buried in Grant's tomb?
People answer that wrong all the time, because Mrs. Grant is there too.
No one is buried in Gran'ts tomb. President Grant and his wife Julia are entombed in Grant's tomb but nobody is buried there.
Friends - I went to his alma mater and participated as a volunteer photographer when they restored the tomb - forget the year - maybe in the 1980s. There was talk about moving the Grant family becaue of the graffiti and drugs etc.
He was a great man in many ways - coming from humble beginnings.
And as many likely know, it was Mark Twain who assisted the throat cancer stricken/dying Grant with his memoirs. His last days were at Mount Mc Kinley inside a prison (I forget if its state or federal). I visited the small home with a porch. There is a great photo of Grant, bundled up, sitting there, writing, suffering. Here is his magnificent quotation while he was dying (for thoese how believe he was not intelligent or poetic):
"I do not sleep though sometimes doze a little...If up I am talked to and in my eforts to answer cause pain. The fact is I think I am a verb instead of a personal pronoun. A verb is anything that signifies to be: to do; or to suffer. I signify all three."
By the way he smoked a pipe until he forgot his pipe and was photographed on a horse with a cigar after a key union victory - the nation sent in boxes of cigars so he switched to them from the pipe. He was a hero during and after the war and during his Presidency.
from his well-chosen subordinates Sherman and Sheridan.
