Orlando Sanchez

Let's imagine not having Sampson, G.G. and Harrison next year. Does that mean we have to successfully recruit Lawrence? Otherwise, it leaves us Obepka as our only rebounder. Maybe redshirting G.G. is not as bad as we feel right now.

Well Jack, let us assume that.......who, other than Lavin himself, decided to take the year off recruiting for 2013??
All but two 2013 players we targeted are going elsewhere and the two remaining may be giving us lip service for all we know. What Juco all-Americans have we targeted? What other serviceable bigs?
What is unimaginable is a team comprised of Garrett, Pointer, Greene, Gift, Obekpa and Branch with Hooper and Frenchie as our "experienced" team in year 4. Someone tell me where the points will come from? That would not be a 20 win NCAA team IMO. That would resemble a Norm Roberts team without a Hardy, Kennedy, Burrell, Horne or, bite my tongue, Sean Evans. This year we may be offensively challenged and defensively non-existent. Next year, without key recruits and minus Sampson, Harrison and the invisible Sanchez, we could be a feather duster once again.
If we were only able to be a peacock with Norm's players, you can pencil in Cluess and Singleton in the staff roster in 2014-15.
Why the doom and gloom? Because we have yet to prove we can coach these "athletes" and actually keep them. Neither Lawrence or Jordan have us as their #1 school and two losing seasons in a row may be too much for Lavin's enormous ego to take. You can only try to rekindle the fan base so many times. Another entire generation of St. John's fans will have been subjected to mediocre basketball over 20 years and do not have a "winning tradition" to keep them hopeful. If Xavier and Butler do not see a vibrant St. John's and Villanova in the horizon, and they do not join the "Cathoic League", the new league will be MAAC level at best.
Lavin needs to keep the foot on the accelerator and not slow down like we seem to be doing this year.
I am hoping Lavin. Surprises us.

Doomed?

you don't need "inside information" to follow today's recruits that use Twitter to tell you their every bowel movement or sources that tell you where they are leaning. If you do not think I want Lav to snag these two you are nuts!
I do not believe everything players and their handlers release because I know they use it as leverage with the recruiting schools.
Jordan: "Temple is "home" to me". After Temple beat Syracuse, his opinion did not decrease.
Lawrence? Three years at Cardozo and it's history of not sending players down to Union Turnpike (any guesses) and having been on campus more than any recruit in recent memory, without ever indicating we "lead" does not take Sherlock Holmes. That he left Cardozo was actuallly a position in our favor.

72,

If Rysheed is looking for stability then perhaps he should consider what teams temple will be playing

Bob, I agree with you 100% but no one knows as yet what teams WE will be playing in 2014-15, the final FINAL year of the Big East. We still are not sure who our partners will be in the new BB league, especially TV.
I would have loved Temple to be part of our new world but football-playings schools appear to be verboten.

What frustrates me is that Lavin has no history of success as a recruiter, yet he expects us to be satisfied with the two top ten classes that he has brought in here. Like that's enough! He tells us nothing---on these message boards, twitter, or anywhere else---about the contacts that he has with potential recruits. He doesn't keep us informed of what the kids are telling him about their intentions. We're supposed to just sit back and wait for success that may never come.

Come on, Coach! You can do better than that!

No need to use negativity to psyche out yourself. Reality are facts, and death and taxes. Until the season is over and the dust has settled, then we're not sure what this season will have in store. There is a strong, likelihood that we continue to play with inconsistency, but it isn't reality.

Like I stated several days ago.... I spoke with someone who has access to Jordan's situation, and Temple wasn't in the lead, as you seem to believe. Things can change, as they tend to do, with these kids. As, of last week that wasn't the case.

I can't speak on Lawrence's situation. I don't know who's the perceived leader for him. I know a few months ago that his mom was fond of the staff.

Once again, it doesn't matter who's leading (although, we all like to hear our team is leading the pack for a recruit) until they commit, and ultimately, sign their name on the dotted line.

Nobody is expecting Gift to be a savior, that includes next year as well. Gift should not have been redshirted and replaced w another JC big. But as they say. whats done is done. The other side of the coin is we could get Lawrence for next year and stll have CO and Sampson. How much PT would he get w those 3 in our lineup.

MJ, I agree it does not matter who is the perceived leader until a prospect actually signs an LOI. However, when you only have two kids you are pursuing with any intensity and the kids are waiting for the Spring signing period, it means there is no clear leader and that is what I based my opinion on......the majority of kids commit by the Fall because they know their preference and want to focus on school and becoming eligible. There are very few "blanks" left next to the top 50 players regarding their school of chioce as of today.
The best case scenario will be we do not lose Sampson and Harrison AND sign Lawrence and Jordan. The nightmare begins if we lose the two and not sign the 2 prospects. Then we are left with sleepers and mystery recruits. Sound familiar?

We're amongst a small group of schools in the race for two blue-chippers. That is all you can ask for at the moment. There is always the possibility we can lose out on one, if not both of these kids. You can't lose out on either one of 'em, if you're not in it. The reality is we are amongst the leaders for Jordan (if not the actual leader) and Lawrence, respectively.

It would be an NCAA violation for Lavin (or any coach), to talk about recruits who have not committed. We'd be hit with sancations (likely postseason and scholarship losses) if he did.

So, I hope he does keep quiet!

True, but when we hired Lavin some of us felt his recruiting skill would lead to one or two five star possibilities. While we show disdain for all things Syracuse, they continue to stock with that level player and still take common recruits at will. They are our major competitor, along with Uconn, for area recruits. Even the prospect of less playing time at Uconn for a Kenton Facey did not sway him in our direction.
If Harrison bolts, even with Jordan signing, we are back to having an unproven frosh to play major minutes and that frosh is only ranked # 66 of the handful of remaining available recruits in the nation. No if, ands, or buts, Lawrence is a must get...period!
Lavin is involved with a small handful of sub-90 rated 2014 players but certainly none in the top 25 as yet.
In year three we are nowhere near the level of players Lavin recruited and signed while at UCLA and miles and miles away from our major NY competitor, Syracuse.
Bottom line is we need players to stay 3-4 years and with the Big East imploding weekly and our future murky, there are no longer guarantees of returning to the elite level of the 80's and without that possibility or at least hope thereof, our future at MSG, our biggest recruiting ace in the hole, will be in question.
Regardless of what others think about him, our lack of an offer to Calipari a few years ago when he was at Memphis may have been the turning point in the level of recruit we could attract.
At that stage, Cal was a millionaire many times over and wanted the challenge of SJ and NYC.
Hey, water under the bridge, no?
Get the players, get them early, lock-em up early and teach them defense.......an old Boeheim strategy that has worked for him to this day.
Get to work staff. LOL!!

I feel like we need to start recruiting kids with ONE major skill. One finely tuned bonafide skill. Be it 3 pt shooting (like Marco), rebounding (Love type), pure shooter (Curry type), defense (Shumpert type), and inside scorer (Chandler/Harden type). It seems like we have assembled a lot of guys who are "pretty good all around" but not great in any one area except Marco. We need to start going for the skill players rather than the overall athletic ones. For example, I would not recruit a guy like Garrett when I know he already signed a million dollar contract with the Reds. Basketball should be their #1 focus, and I would recruit based on pure skills. You can always have a few overall jack of all trade types coming off the bench, but we need proven players playing in their natural position where they excel.

First of all, the season is far from being over. I understand the frustration (I don't like the way the team is currently performing, either), but I wish a few of you would stop posting, as if we've played our last game of the season. Not to mention, overanalyzing issues (ie, whom we're recruiting in 2014) that really aren't issues. I guess you forgot the staff were on Jared Terrell and Tadric Jackson from the 2014 class. Both of those kids are top 50 players. I also feel confident more targets will surface in the 2014 class.

From what I've heard from a few reliable people, Facey wasn't a big loss. Maybe, he puts those people to shame and become a very, productive player in college. But it seems we'll be able to manage losing him.

So, we're gonna downgrade Jordan due to one particular site rated him at #66, huh? How about Rivals and Prepstars ratings? Jordan is rated #29 (Rivals) and #28 (PrepStars), respectively. See how that works?

Preferebly, I'd rather go by his ranking, per RSCI. It's a combination of rankings, per recruitniks. Jordan is ranked #41, per the RSCI. I don't mind dialogue, but when it comes to facts then let's present 'em. Try not to cherry pick.

Quite frankly, if things are so bad, then maybe you should step away for the remainder of the season (I stepped away in January during the 2009-2010 season). No need of beating yourself over the head. It's not gonna get any better once conference play start, right? Maybe, you can save yourself some trouble and angst.

72, you are completely wrong on the offer to Calipari. It was written up approved etc. Then Looie threatened to walk away from the University and put the kabosh to the offer. It's that simple. Loyalty to Looie killed Calipari being coach. Which way would you want it?

LOL!!

TBD MJ, tbd. But if a fan did not suffer agnst, then the joy of sports would be futile! I guess you are not a Jets fan?

Suffering angst does make things that much better when the fruits of labor pays off.

A Jets fan?! Ha! Never! Never! You've guessed correctly. My son is a Jets fan, though. LOL
