Orlando Sanchez

I am the last person to defend the NCAA but I believe the delay is at least partially caused by the fact they are dealing with info needed from a foreign country.

The NCAA Clearinghouse should have done their due diligence when Sanchez enrolled in JUCO.

With such an inept organization I'm not surprised this is taking forever. But at the end of the day, how can the NCAA say they're helping student athletes by pulling this kind of stuff? Why was Muhammed initially cleared anyway? Wasn't Sanchez initially cleared as well? The last year or so the NCAA has really pooped the bed more so than usual IMO.

Uh, the NCAA has no jurisdiction over JUCO or JUCO players. Same as they don't at NAIA schools. They can only deal with prospects AFTER they've applied to the organization for membership (by letter of intent or grant in aid to an NCAA member school)....

Thanks for that info

Come on; the NCAA couldn't care less about JUCO.

Have we ever been told what exactly is the focus of the investigation? Is it possible the NCAA trying to find a way to rule in Orlando's favor? How long would it take to say no? They gotta know they look bad letting the kid hang.

I think they just want to hurt st johns and are looking for a way to do it. I dont trust that ncaa-

why are they trying to hurt SJU?

Because they didn't hire Matt Doherty  who by the way is as piss poor at the update desk as an analyst as he was as a coach. ;)

I agree with you! Wow he is terrible at the update desk.

how is it that UCLA gets a decision (unfavorable) then an appeal then a decision on the appeal (favorable) almost immediately from the NCAA and this kid who has worked hard to better his life is in perpetual Limbo still weeks later?

This is not a viable excuse as im sure the NCAA has dealt with the Dominican Republic for many baseball players, He is not the first player to get a division 1 scholarship coming from another country. It is pathetic that it is taking this long to get an answer, any answer at this point.

At this point St.Johns should get their attorneys involved and put some pressure on the NCAA. If they come back and say that he has one year of eligiblity left,10 to 15 games will have already been played so he will not even be getting a full season. This is an outrage at this point. We're not talking about a freshman who still has possibly a four year college career still ahead of him and has some time.

since he has already missed half the season if they decide that he has 1 year of eligibility left can he be redshirted and play a full year next year?

This is a difficult situation for Orlando, St John's and Lavin. The delay seems unfair, in light of the UCLA decisions and how quickly they were resolved..
That being said, a big time BB program has staff to document every NCAA detail required to have a player qualify to play. If there was the remotest chance that Sanchez presented a question mark during his recruitment and enrollment, why wasn't this vetted previously and addressed in a much earlier time frame?

Recruiting Jucos has been a nemesis for St John's going back to the Walter Berry days and Michael Porter, etc. While others, Marcus Hatten, haven't been a problem, it seems there is often eligibility issues that inflict themselves to the detriment of the athlete and school.

Regrettably, the next BB game that Sanchez plays may be in the NBA and not, for the Johnnies.

Yes they can and I think once we hit Big East play that is what we will do unless Sanchez wants to play. I hope he does get two years.

When does the semester end? Because my prediction is that that's the last time anyone will see Sanchez on campus.

I understand the NCAA is "supposedly" trying to do their due diligence in making sure he is eligible. However, I think they should have been able to figure out his situation by now.

Just my two cents:

From what I have heard from a couple of in-the-know people at St. John's, it will be a long shot for him to become eligible.

I hope they are proven wrong because the same group said he is a difference maker from day 1.

From what I know, no one truly knows what is gonna happen when it comes to Sanchez being eligible. The staff still feels optimistic. So, we shall see.

Besides the difference maker stuff is probably the staff just blowing smoke............
