Orlando Sanchez

I actually think he will be a more gifted scorer than some think. He's an unselfish player, gifted passer, solid shooter and has very good footwork for a 6'9" kid. I think he'll be scoring at a greater clip than some think he is capable of once he gets comfortable. We run a lot and he will have apple opportunity in this offense to put the ball in the basket.

I agree, MCN. I believe Sanchez's numbers had more to do with his unselfish play and the chucking of Monroe's backcourt.

Sanchez handles the ball fairly well, and seems to have a decent mid-range shot based on the couple of games I watched him play. One particular play sticks in my head. Monroe was playing their first game during the NJCAA tournament. Sanchez craftily crossed over the defender and calmly drained a 17' jumper. There were a few other nice plays made during those two games I witnessed, but that particular play really stuck with me.

I like what he brings to the table. I feel he has a very, solid floor game (ie, able to do lots of things). I also believe his ability to score is being undervalued.

I don't expect much from him offensively. I do think he's the type of player that will do as good or better at higher levels of compeition, but he's never proven that he's a scorer in two years of JUCO ball and a summer with the Dominican. He's shown he can defend and run, I'd be thrilled if he does that for us and gives us 7-9 points.

One thing is for sure is that he's going to get more looks with STJ. He'll be the tallest player that has contributed major minutes since Lavin arrived.

I think his best attribute offensively is going to be his passing from what some who have seen him have said about him. I think he is going to make everyone else better. I'd be very happy with 8-10ppg and and some assists

I don't believe he'll be a spectacular scorer, but I think he is capable of scoring more than he did at Monroe. I'd also be satisfied, if he were scoring between 8-10ppg, since he brings so much more to the table. I do believe he'll have his moments where he'll put up some decent scoring totals.

Basically, I think he's better offensively than his totals show.

Not familiar with the writer, but he definitely has a nice handle on our team -- or at least what a lot of the more positive posters' expectations for the team are.

This writer actually shows he knows about basketball and about St. John's. It's safe to say that there will be some JUCO's that have a bigger impact than Sanchez--there are just so many great combo guards, undersized PF's, and shooters every year in JUCO ball--but the writer really hit the nail on the head with Sanchez mostly contribting on the boards and defensively. Sanchez is the exact kind of kid that Dunlap was thinking about when he went with his zone.

The one question to me is how Sanchez fell so far with his blocked shots in one year? His freshman blocks per game average was off the charts. I'm sure Ndour coming to town and sliding him down to the four contributed. Sanchez went from 4.3 bpg to 1.8. Ndour average 2.5 (almost the exact difference).

Think you may have answered your own question re the shot block stats. Funny but Tyson chandler is known as a shot blocker and at least for past 2 yrs he has averaged 1.1 and less than 2 this season.

per associate a-d at monroe college...sanchez can be a high impact player. he's a legitimate 6'9"...runs the floor extremely well. throws it down with authority at the end of fast breaks. outstanding defensively. problem is he's perhaps too nice and deferential to teammates. he has the ability to score at will...but won't unless that possible negative part of his game is solved.

That would also aid in the reason why he didn't average so many points.

Sounds like our center.

Are the numbers accurate in terms of his stats posted here? I immediatelky questioned how a 6'9" athlete who can run the floor would onlly get 5 rebounds per game at the level. Blocking 5 shots appears impressive, but he could have also parked himself in the middle, didn't defend his man, and swatted everything that much smaller players threw up around the hoop. I don't trust stats at that level as indicative of ability or even accurate, but 5 rebounds per game stand out as very low.

The team didn't miss so no chances for rebounds :p

His numbers are identical to Brownlee. I'd expect a similar if not better impact mostly because of his age, international experience and the top notch coaching staff which JB32 didn't have his first year.

Brownlee had better teammates at Chipola JC.

You do realize that Monroe is Top 5 JUCO team? Just like I'm sure Chipola was that year. Both played on loaded teams and didn't need to be 'the man'.

Flowers and JB did well. Casey Mitchell had moments his Sr yr but was more of a headcase and Kreft sucked.

Lastly JUCO Junction has gone down the toilet. Their rankings last year were putrid and they haven't updated anything this year in terms of rankings.

Brownlee´s teammates were to Southern Mississippi, West Virginia, Mississippi or Florida State.
Sanchez´s teammates will go to Liberty and North Carolina Central. And we outrecruited Louisiana Tech for Bourgault.

So what point are you trying to make Gonzalo? Just showed you that Kreft was over his head at FSU. Mitchell needed a year to adjust like JB and flowers was the centerpiece from Day 1. Good for him.

So are you saying that Sanchez is going to suck? Be worse than Brownlee? This fan base puzzles me. We need a shooter we need a shooter, we get a kid and they complain the competition we beat for Marco. Nobody can win with this fan base. Its amazing.

1 ball, 5 players, 200 minutes. Only so many studs you can have. Do you want a Top 50 player dispensing water on the end of the bench too? :side:

Hey there was no competition for most of Butler's players but they made the national championship and advanced deep more than once. It's called talent evaluation. Fwiw, Maryland was interested in Sanchez and Bourgault before Turgeon took over. It doesn't really matter and I'm not sure what point Gonzalo was attempting to make here. Sanchez is more highly recruited out of JC than Brownlee by far and many have said that Sanchez has been under recruited. Trying to extrapolate his JC numbers to what he'll do at SJU is futile. SJU has very different system and different plans for Orlando than Monroe CC did I'm pretty sure. Either way, it seems most will likely be pleasantly surprised since he can only surpass his JC numbers.

Very valid point Moose.
But to answer your question - no, of course not. I would however like a top 10 or top 20 player (or 2). We're in new territory with Lavin's recruiting classes - but those kind of impact players are the next step. Maybe Lawrence or Mccullough will be those guys.
