Orlando Sanchez

He reminds me a little of one of my all time faves, Bob Pettit. He put up some ridiculous numbers with that line drive shot.

Showing your age, Bobre
I'd bet a decent % of the posters on this site never heard of Petit or saw him play
Unfortunately, I'm old enough to remember him very well :)

does anyone else think he needs to have a little more arc on his shot? maybe i'm reading into it too much

I think it looks perfect. Especially for a 6"9" PF. Orlando and Jakarr will be havoc up front for less athletic forwards.

Houston Cougars did great with a 6-9 center named Elvin Hayes So 6-9 can work

5'9" Johnny O'brien played the post for Seattle University . Their team even upset the Harlem Globetrotters. Their are always exceptions.

You , by and large, don't put your money on exceptions, unless you're looking for tax deductions.

Whether he be 6'9" or 6'11" the thing you need is a board banger, blocker, and bucket banker .

The S A T results will be out around the 24th of the month. That well may be what we are waiting for with Chandler. That and/or accreditation of his courses.
how does that effect the spring signing period which ends the 16th?

If I'm not mistaken, it doesn't
It's my understanding that an athlete won't sign a LOI but can sign a grant-in-aid after the 16th

I'm sure we were both toddlers watching some NBA archive films. Right?

Absolutely!!

How about George Yardley, Cliff Hagan, Jungle Jim Luscatoff and Clyde Lovelette?

Maybe
But are they old enough to have watched him play with the St. Louis Hawks?
I would bet the majority of our posters are not

I still think best power forward of all time. Think Dave Debusschere + 3 inches and deadly from either corner with very sharp elbows. Closest I ever saw to Pettit was Mo Lucas the year Portland won the title. Pettit did it for a decade plus.

Is there anybody else that thought that Orlando's shot looked perfectly fine? I don't see a line-drive shot there. No he doesnt throw rainbows like Reggie Miller, but it looks quite good IMHO.

Sanchez's shot seems fine to me. Don't know how many 3's he makes during a game or if he takes many (anyone know?). Based on the film clip, I wouldn't ask him to change it-they go in and he looks smooth enough on it. I know short clips can be misleading, but that is all I have to go on- so keep on shootin' it Orlando.

It's not a big part of his game at all. He made six treys in two years of JUCO, shooting less than 20%. 1-12 as a freshman (8.3%) and 5-19 (26%) as a soph. Bourgault, in comparsion, shot 84-201 (42%) in his first year. Monroe is not an extremely well-coached team, though, and who knows how many of those shots were end of the shot clock heaves. He was, at best, the fourth deep option for Monroe. I feel very confident sayingg he'll get a lot more open looks at STJ, simly because of the offense we run.

Much like Moe, Sanchez seems like the type of kid that will play better against higher levels go up.

Sanchez looks a little like Moe w his ability to get the ball in the hoop.I believe he will be very good.

Nice summation of Pettit's game. The guy's numbers for his 11 years in the NBA are pretty impressive: 26.4 ppg, 16.2 rpg, an All-Star every year, Rookie of the Year, two NBA MVPs, and an NBA title at a time when the Celtics were winning just about everything. Still -- and perhaps it's because, given my age, I remember him more clearly than I do Pettit, and got to see him play more frequently thanks to greater NBA TV exposure -- I always think of Maurice Lucas as the man who personified "power" at the power forward position. (To see him and a healthy Bill Walton play side by side was something else, and I still haven't forgiven the Knicks for trading him for Truck "Look Ma, No Hands" Robinson.) As for Sanchez, if he's just one-quarter of the player Bob Pettit was, we're lucky to have him.

*Thanks for the info. I imagine we will find out a bit more- when the next season begins.
I am excited about the players coming in and believe we will see a much more intensive defensive game given we have the numbers to press and not have to worry as much about fouls or getting tired. Any outside shooting we can get from Orlando and Jakarr would be a bonus.

Pettit's title was Russell's sprained ankle in '58. Knicks second title was Havlicek's bad shoulder in '73.

Not familiar with the writer, but he definitely has a nice handle on our team -- or at least what a lot of the more positive posters' expectations for the team are.

This writer actually shows he knows about basketball and about St. John's. It's safe to say that there will be some JUCO's that have a bigger impact than Sanchez--there are just so many great combo guards, undersized PF's, and shooters every year in JUCO ball--but the writer really hit the nail on the head with Sanchez mostly contribting on the boards and defensively. Sanchez is the exact kind of kid that Dunlap was thinking about when he went with his zone.

The one question to me is how Sanchez fell so far with his blocked shots in one year? His freshman blocks per game average was off the charts. I'm sure Ndour coming to town and sliding him down to the four contributed. Sanchez went from 4.3 bpg to 1.8. Ndour average 2.5 (almost the exact difference).
