Perhaps he enjoyed being king of the recruiting hill post Slice, but I know that has changed. Believe me on this.
Hopefully he conveys that to his boss and a second recruiter is added to the mix. Seton Hall, Providence, etc utilize that approach. Our one man model is insufficient based on results I see. If CM chooses to stay the course with Matt doing all the heavy lifting, so be it. We can then see how that translates to becoming a competitive program.
I remain skeptical but supportive. Btw, no one is perfect, but suspect Matt will burn out in the current approach. Without him, the transfer game won’t work as well.
I think there will be hmmm "positive encouragement" put on Chris to expand the staff to include another hard boiled talented recruiter. To that point, I think Mike Rice is a HC type, and not someone who would be happy (in the long term) beating the bushes as a primary pursuit even if he could deliver one or two of his AAU plums. I think recruiters are the college equivalent of middle relief pitchers - incredibly important to the success of a program, but others get all of the credit.
Hopefully it happens, but in the meantime, I do believe Heron will be made eligible, but the NCAA can take its time on this one, perhaps to discourage anyone contemplating doing the same. When that happens, we likely will become a bonafide NCAA team as opposed to a good team fighting for a dance ticket.
Can I ask you something, why do you think Heron will be eligible? Do you have inside information?
Or is it based on speculation from people on this board and twitter among other things that gives you hope he will be eligible? Because the rule is that if you transfer you need to sit a year. That is the rule.
My larger point is people who choose to NOT believe certain negative things about this staff chalk it up to "insiders" and "speculation." But the minute something positive "may" happen suddenly we need to "believe" that even though for the most part it is built largely on idle speculation. Why?
Most NCAA legal process go like this: NCAA conducts its own review/questioning, school submits a letter (have seen some 5-10, others 200+) describing your facts, your reasoning, your defenses, etc. And then wait and see. And that's really all there is to it. Could be wrong in terms of a hardship waiver, but I don't think it's that different.
You understand that was not my point.
Let me ask the board a question. What if the NCAA fails to grant the waiver? Do you blame the NCAA? Do you blame the insiders who thought he would get it? What if SJU struggles because Heron is not eligible? Should SJU have placed so much emphasis on a transfer seeking immediate eligibility as opposed to top recruits who don't need waivers?
Heron's commitment to us was after Roberts, Williams, Earlington, Wright, Carraher (both sitting out) and Figueroa had committed and was pretty late in the game. So for the upcoming season (although neither Carraher or Wright ore eligible), it was no as opposed to top recruits who don't need waivers as that ship had already sailed. They were going to ride with the recruits and returnees they had. There weren't many top recruits left, if any and if there were some who reclassified (like Wilson last year) we were not involved. Heron deciding to transfer and coming here was a Christmas gift we received in June. (Note:This is not about the merits or capabilities of those incoming recruits, just trying to answer your question)
As for whom to blame if the Waiver doesn't come,:
NCAA rules basically say that if a student athlete transfers from one D1 school to another and has not graduated, they must sit out a year. I also allows for Waivers under certain circumstances which is also part of the rule. The belief by some if not many (including persons not associated with the program) believe this is one of those circumstances.
It it turns out to be denied, I wont' blame the so-called "insiders" and probably not the school (unless it is proven that the school screwed it up) but I might question as to why the NCAA came to such a ruling especially if what has been provided appears to fall within those circumstances. Others will definitely blame the NCAA while others will blame St. John's for not doing what needed to be done or not having the proper resources while others will blame both.
It would be nice if we were so confident in that we could consider Heron being granted a waiver gravy or a cherry on top but due to inexperience and lack of size, we do have question marks. I get and understand that. I also get and understand that everyone want some commitments from this star studded 2019 class. But Heron's and hoping that he is granted a waiver had nothing to do with recruiting of high school kids who would be eligible for 2019.
Will have more to do with the resources expended on it. If true that it was done in-house, then people should lose their job, starting with JO.
Mike Glazier, Partner at Bond, Shoeneck and King should have been hired.
https://www.bsk.com/people/mike-glazier/collegiate-sports. If he couldn't get it done, then we'd have no choice but to blame NCAA.
