Nuri Leaving

Program is falling apart fast

Yes. Tragedy. St. John's basketball future hinges on the transfer of a kid who was here for less than a semester.

Hurts for this season; minimal impact after that.

4 decommitments in 3 months, disappointment of current players, now this transfer, just wait till the rumors on Lavin start

if it was one of the freshman and not a 22 yr old soph with a ton of baggage that was leaving you might have a point. But the other 3 werent just "decommits" one is coming back and they didnt have the grades to begin with. Stop stirring sht up

i hate to say the sky is falling...but does anyone think lavin's job will be easier after this? i'm starting to feel a "lower our standards" mode that may creep in from the powers that be. we'll see. maybe the school just has a bad karma...

You may be on to something.

His quotes in the press release about Lavin not coaching him are lacking class IMO.

I can't believe other posters( other than me) aren't pissed about this. People wishing him luck? Huh? He quit after 9 games knowing how thin the roster is. Then he says he wanted to play for coach Lav, but it hasn't worked out like he envisioned? Well we didnt envision you missing 2 free throws with the A & M game on the line, or dribbling the ball off your leg 3 times vs Detroit.. get lost

Obviously everyone here is "pissed" that we are going to be left even more shorthanded than before, but what good does badmouthing the kid (if you can call a 22yo a kid) do? He wants to leave, fine, good luck elsewhere, imo.
True - none of us truly know what is best for Nuri. I think I know, but it doesn't mean I'm correct. In the end, he'll have to live with his decision. It will effect him much more than the team over the long run, so I hope he's choosing correctly. Imho I would have waited for Coach to get back and complete the season b4 making such a big decision. In the scheme of things, it'll be another transition, another set of teammates and coaches to get used to. essentially, another year will be lost in addition to this one.

BTW, is it just me or do the insincere sounding (doesn't mean they are not) boiler plate comments irk you all? The "I'll always love and support St. John's," "the decision was best for me and my family," "I apologize to the fans and supporting cast" ---it all seems like the break up cliches that are used in dating and sports...lol

Nuri's quotes say exactly what he means. Nuri expected to come in this season for ony one season and be "coached up" by Lavin and groomed for the NBA. Somehow this kid feels that Lavin being out a month or so is the reason that he's shooting 0% from the outside. And turning it over every other possession. He graced us with his "presence" enough. It must have been extremely frustrating coming here and finding out that unranked Phil Greene was better than him. Remember, last year he was already calling himself SJU's "starting PG".

The kid is nowhere near ready for NBA andis suffering the delusion that he's Wilt Chamberlain and that somehow SJU is slowing him down. Abandoning SJU right now is total gutless BS. Don't need guys like this around the program. He's got a better shot at an MBA than the NBA right now. He'll be playing in The Chosen League.

Well, with Nuri or without him, the assist to TO had to go up for overall play to improve for the team. Phil and Malik's better ratios will help the ball flow, but I'd never want to lose talent that could have hopefully been molded as in Nuri's case. I think the staff was starting to break him down in order to begin building him back up as they do in the military. It was ill-received and a reflex withdrawal (instead of hanging in there and improving) occurred - that's too bad.

Maybe I'll try that out with my girlfriend. "Hey thanks for the love but I'll be moving on to another girl now." Just waiting for Nuri to give us the "It's not you it's me" tweet. What a joke. Peace bro. If there are any NBDL teams with a need for a point guard with the right hand driving ability of Aron Ralston and the outside jumper of Curtis Johnson you're in luck.

I thought of that "it's not you it's me" as well - crazy S... Let me know how it goes if you ever deliver that one to your gf if you break up - Don't do it! lol

This kids delusional, of all the players besides Stith, this is who I would want to transfer if I had to choose. From what I saw this year, he is very overrated, he is 0-6 from 3-point range, he is shooting about 56% from the free throw line and he turns the ball over. A program like Iowa State will take a shot with him. They take every malcontent athlete who wants to transfer mid-year or possibly Oregon who stole Devoe Joseph from Minnesota last year, when Joseph quit.

Now for all you Idiots who think this is the downfall for St. John's. Every program has to deal with stuff like this. Look at Minnesota last year or Oklahoma who just lost their 2nd leading scorer to transfer. St. John's is never going to be Kentucky, NC, or Duke. It is to hard when you don't have football. Villanova is having a down year, PC is one of the toughest jobs in the country, DePaul lost by 20 to UWM. G-Town and Marquette seem like they are going to have good years from the non-football Big East.

What are you looking at? Our conference has completely fallen apart. Four recruits have decommitted. We have ZERO signed recruits for next year. Let me say that again ZERO signed recruits for next year (Is there not a fax machine on campus at Bridgton Academy??) Our coach is out indefinitely. Granted most of this is out of our control but it’s just really surreal how horribly the past 3 months have gone for us after how high we got our hopes up.

We have 2 games left(fordham and Texas PA) until Garrett is eligible to return. So we will be really shorthanded for those 2 and then be back to where we were. and we may be better off with garrett then nuri. first we have a kid who has from day 1 pledged his love for our university and second he is a front court player where we are week. greene and stith will man the PG position and the 5 others will rotate up front.

And hopefully with Lavin gaining stamina he will be able to coach this team soon.

Nuri's departured hurts at the moment, but we will bounce back and be a better team.

Garrett should be eligible for UTPA, I believe.

Just curious-anyone know if Malik Nichols (sp?) would be eligible to come this month with Amir, as I thought he was supposed to graduate last year from what I have read, and he decided to go to prep school to get a better offer than he had-or was it his grades? If he is eligible I would jump on him as he would be another defensive player and a very live body-which we need- and certainly now have space for :)

Not a bad post. Quite frankly, your above-quote was something I kinda tossed around in my head. Unfortunately, the manuever didn't work out and he's not hightailing it out of town.

IMO, you could see him somewhat dogging it during his play in the Detroit game (hence, Moose's point-shaving joke during the game). He seemed somewhat out of it for a couple of a games prior to Detroit. But, he seemed clearly out of it versus Detroit. I guess we now know why.

0-15 from 3.

My first post. Great to be part of this forum. Been a Redmen supporter since the days of Sonny Dove and Johnny Warren mid 60's. In Detroit game late in the second half Nuri had just scored on a driving layup and a timeout was called with the camera right on Nuri saying something to Gene Keady who gave Nuri an if looks could kill face with Nuri on the bench when play resumed. I'd love to know what the remark was.

I remember that sequence.
Keady has a scowl like an old nun.

A scowl like an old nun! LOL! Classic, TIS, just classic!

As for Nuri, I can't wish him well or not well. Just go.

TG I didn't experience it first hand, but in my school, Sr. Jean Michael also packed a mean right hook to go with her scowl!

The guy apparantly has a lot of issues but his leaving does not bode well for our future. The impact of playing with such a short roster could cause the other players to get down significantly I am ignorant of why we are limited to only 12 scholarships when other teams I believe offer 15. I may be wrong on that but if it is the case would having the full amount have not offset to a large degree the loss of three (now four ) players ?

We are not limited to 12.
We are allowed 13 just as everyone else. Nobody has more scholarship players than that.
