Nuri Leaving

Program is falling apart fast

This year is falling apart, but I don't know about the whole program.

It's just going to take longer then we all hoped for, IMO.

The problem is that most of us had our patience stretched to the limit during the Norm years. Hate to ask for it, but we all need to take a deep breath, and show even more patience. Last year earned this staff the benefit of the doubt, IMO (even if I said otherwise back in September, but that was a snap reaction rant).

Lavin realizes it too, his WFAN interview the other day he said he set a timeline for i think he said 2013-2014 for the program to compete at the top. Nothing wrong with that imo. Better than the Met's outlook :(

Yes. Tragedy. St. John's basketball future hinges on the transfer of a kid who was here for less than a semester.

Hurts for this season; minimal impact after that.

4 decommitments in 3 months, disappointment of current players, now this transfer, just wait till the rumors on Lavin start

His quotes in the press release about Lavin not coaching him are lacking class IMO.

I can't believe other posters( other than me) aren't pissed about this. People wishing him luck? Huh? He quit after 9 games knowing how thin the roster is. Then he says he wanted to play for coach Lav, but it hasn't worked out like he envisioned? Well we didnt envision you missing 2 free throws with the A & M game on the line, or dribbling the ball off your leg 3 times vs Detroit.. get lost

Obviously everyone here is "pissed" that we are going to be left even more shorthanded than before, but what good does badmouthing the kid (if you can call a 22yo a kid) do? He wants to leave, fine, good luck elsewhere, imo.

Let's hope he is here for 2013-2014 season.

My first post. Great to be part of this forum. Been a Redmen supporter since the days of Sonny Dove and Johnny Warren mid 60's. In Detroit game late in the second half Nuri had just scored on a driving layup and a timeout was called with the camera right on Nuri saying something to Gene Keady who gave Nuri an if looks could kill face with Nuri on the bench when play resumed. I'd love to know what the remark was.

To me he is a quitter, he gave up on the team. Then the selfish quote-- you can wish him luck if you want.

Welcome aboard, John.

Didn't notice it, but I usually turn away from the TV during timeouts. That Keady scowl is usually hard to miss (but as we've learned these last 2 years, that scowl on the court masks a jovial personality off the court).

if it was one of the freshman and not a 22 yr old soph with a ton of baggage that was leaving you might have a point. But the other 3 werent just "decommits" one is coming back and they didnt have the grades to begin with. Stop stirring sht up

Obviously everyone here is "pissed" that we are going to be left even more shorthanded than before, but what good does badmouthing the kid (if you can call a 22yo a kid) do? He wants to leave, fine, good luck elsewhere, imo.

After leaving his undermanned team high and dry, sulking because the coach got in his face, and taking backhanded shots at Dunlap in the press release, he deserves to have his character questioned just a little.

I'm not going wish him bad luck, but I'm not going to wish him good luck, either. I simply won't be thinking of him at all once it's confirmed that he's on his way back to Philadelphia.

Supposedly the kid & Dunlap butted heads over the past few weeks & he feels he can do better elsewhere. Where is anyone's guess.

I can't believe he let his teammates down like that. Its disgusting that he would just quit.

Going into conference play with 6 guys is just down right criminal.

It also sucks for Lavin - he's now gonna have to rush back and control this sinking ship.

Go to the STJ sports facebook site and read what Nuri's boys were posting there yesterday, specifically about Dunlap.
I'm certain this had a bearing on his "departure."

About 4th post down, and make sure it's set on all posts, not just the one's released from the school.

What was your reaction to those posts?

My first was that these people know nothing about proper grammer (and this coming from someone who probably shouldn't talk on the issue).

The guy who started it claims that he doesn't know Lindsey, but several others seemed to call him out on it. Even if he didn't know, it's clear that they jumped in on the topic.

I also didn't understand the post from the woman claiming to be Nuri's mom (You can never tell on those sites if that's truthful or not, but I have no reason to not believe her). Was she defending the staff, or attacking them? That wasen't clear.
 "grammer" - classic...lol

I do not believe any of the comments were thought out too well. To state "you shouldn't pull the starters off the floor" is crazy. Looking at the minutes logged by starters (26-33 mpg) and just two more main players (19 and 26 mpg respectively) shows that the starters are logging a lot of minutes. I do not think many more starter minutes per game could be maintained during Beast season and not have the team experience serious fatigue issues due to lack of depth. Some Beast players are logging mpg around 35-37, but I've never been a fan of that many minutes for one player. 35 or less is more desirable imho.

"If you look at the bench who is capable of winning games besides the star players?" >>Well, as of right now, we have zero star players. Future stars? Maybe.... The guys need time to learn their roles, their positions at Div. 1 level, and how to play together as a team on a consistent basis. Phil Greene has as much chance to be a star player as most of the other starters at this point in their college careers. Simply an ill-informed comment.

"it don't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Nurideen Lindsey is a playmaker" >> Except for this one little thing about what a playmaker is.... definition - "playmaker" - a player in a team sport who leads attacks or maneuvers in such a way that a teammate can score. Ranking 71st in A/TO ratio in the Beast simply shows mork work needs to be done in both areas. Usually, Frosh pick up the pace with some add'l practice time focus, and improve into the season for conference play. Of course, one prerequisite is you actually have to practice and play in the games to improve.

"It's hard to watch players put out so much hard work n effort, make the changes thats being asked of them with losing results." >>> This gets my Captain Obvious award. No fooling, it's not easy. And it takes time and dedication. Hard work and effort does not happen overnight, or even in 9 games. I'm patient, and I think it's not too much to ask our guys to be patient, listen and learn.

"THE FOCUS IS ON THE COACHING STAFF" >>> gotta love when people bold everything. Mom or not, imo her bottom line is the other posters are focusing on what the coaching staff is supposedly not doing. Classic passing the buck and a lack of accountability going on with that comment. According to the poster, I'm allowed to make that comment on any coach or player - I'm making it about a player if they quit on their team in midstream. Before the start and after a season are another story...

In the end, I hope NL reconsiders after realizing the staff wants the games to go better as much as they do. Maybe coaches are here to "inspire" and "persuade" players to improve their games. Probably could make a class project youtube video out of those topics ;)

I remember that sequence.
Keady has a scowl like an old nun.

He stated that Lavin not being around was a big factor.

Yeah St. John's really needs a kid who kicks a cancer patient in the face when he's down. See ya!

i hate to say the sky is falling...but does anyone think lavin's job will be easier after this? i'm starting to feel a "lower our standards" mode that may creep in from the powers that be. we'll see. maybe the school just has a bad karma...

Yes. Plus you never know with coaches, contracts don't mean much to alot of them.

Fair enough. Agree 100% on the press release, that surely leaves a more sour taste in my mouth after reading.
