Nuri Leaving

Despite all the rumors, feelings towards Nuri etc. I wish he would have embraced our system, our shortcomings right now and stuck it out and practiced what he preached by being a big brother type to these freshman, Things would have worked out well for him in the long run. Unfortunately people in his ear were not too fond of Dunlap. It just shows you that he truly only wanted a year in college and wanted out sooner than later.

Nuri leaving was the best thing to happen to this team. We went from a horrid FT shooting team to #2 in the Big East with a group of first year players...we've gone 4-2, and we've landed a true PG that plays defense and will be eligible to play an extra year longer than Nuri.

I only wish Nuri left before the A&M game, so we'd have an extra two wins (A&M and Detriot).

I was not a big fan of his game but I think this is a little tough..

It's a little tough and its also nonsense. SJ is 8th in the conference in FT shooting, not 2nd. Take out all Lindsey's FTs and SJ moves up a couple of spots, unless of course Dom Pointer (.47), Amir Garrett (.37) or Harkless (.68) took those FTs, and then not so much. Lindsey led the team in scoring vs A&M and was second in rebounds -if he'd made those 2 FTs they'd have given him the game ball. Meanwhile versus A&M Gazuntheit Achiewa scored 3 points and had 3 rebounds in 30 minutes; versus Detroit GodBlessYou had no field goals and 5 TOs in 38 minutes. Meanwhile w/o him SJ managed to beat the likes of Texas Pan Am, Fordham, and St Francis.

That said, Lindsey wouldn't have been around in 2 years when the team contends so in that sense the more minutes for the freshmen the better. But mindlessly ripping the kid and spreading lies and rumors about him really should be beyond the pale.

All the while embracing a kid who left his school mid year to come here. A tad bit hypocritical no? Furthermore if you look at Branch's stats and Nuri's if this were a roto trade it would be veteod for being unfair. I am a fan and I hope Branch works out but I simply do not understand all the crap heaped on Lindsey. I enjoyed his game despite all the shortcomings and despite what some nitwits have been saying we are not better off w/o him this season. The funny thing is it was basically taboo to say anything bad about a paid professional in Norm on this sight. And if you question anything Lavin does it is considered blasphamy. But lets rip a 20 year old kid becuase he decided to transfer.

I agree with the Lavin double standard statement. He is not perfect and should be fair game for reasonable criticism. Regarding Nuri though I think his reason for leaving leaves a lot to be desired. Number one is he quit on his team mates when he knew he was needed. Number two, he got all the playing time he could handle and was not the second coming by any means. Number three, if every D1 player left a program just because he didn't care for his coaches' personality the entire NCAA structure would collapse. In short his action was unjustified on any front and I have no respect for him as a result. Now, if a kid isn't playing that's an entirely different matter. They are not paid and should be free to seek a better opportunity if it presents itself. Nuri didn't have that problem. He was probably a high risk recruit and I'm not so sure we should have been involved with him to begin with in the final analysis.

You agree with the Lavin double standard becuase he messed with Evans PT. Well it seems right after the A&M game they totally changed the offense and to me made Nuri out to be a scapegoat. When the team was winning early and even in the Zona loss Nuri was the greatest thing since Beer. Didn't Branch leave in mid season too or am i missing something? I am sure Nuri was no angel, but do you know what he was RECRUITED here. Plus with all the conflicting reports about whether him leaving was mutual I am just surprised at all the hate. For me personally I enjoyed watching him and wished it would have worked out.

He also left a very young and thin team in the middle of a semester. But on a positive note we knew early he wouldnt be here next year and Lavin had the opportunity to rectify the loss,IMO with a player we need more. I also think Nuri played like a SF just not tall enough. He didnt have an outside shot and wasnt a good distibuter w the ball. He could ,however get to the rim at will and was an acrobat in the air.

So are we supposed to shun someone that is going to help our team?? I don't understand how we are hypocrites? Totally nonsensical. We can't be pissed that someone decides to leave our team with 6 scolly players at the time, that was getting 40 minutes a game?? Now we can't be happy that we are blessed to be getting a point guard with talent?? I don't understand this. I guess we should put our newest student down on here and call him names for leaving a different school?? So whatever school Nurideen goes to I hope they hate on him, or gosh golly they are hypocrites too. -rolls eyes-

I think the two scenarios a bit different. It had been reported that Nuri wasn't meshing with the team and not willing to do what the coaching staff asked of him. Further, his friends and family were bad mouthing Dunlap a bit on Facebook etc. I don't think it makes Nuri a criminal. The circumstances were different though, as the people at A&M didn't want to lose Branch. At SJU, Nuri was starting, yet not working well with the team and coaches apparently. In addition, reports of academic issues. I still wish Nuri the best. Time to move on. We have a new PG in town.

Branch wasn't playing. Nuri was. Evans could have left too but he stuck it out to his and our eventual benefit. Now he's making $$$ and that's a good thing.

Wow. You don't have to bash Branch, but why bash Nuri? They both left school in season. Yes if you are killing a guy for "quitting" than how can you be happy about a "quiter" coming in? That is hyprocritical yes. The fact that you can't see that is a little alarming though.

I'm a little confused. We are happy Branch is coming here. I couldn't care less that he left his school. It's the fans of Texas A&M that can be pissed about that. Just like we can be pissed about Nurideen leaving here. I don't understand the hypocrisy. So for me not to be a hypocrite I have to be pissed at him leaving A&M?? The point you and a few others are trying to make is pointless. We are not allowed to have feelings I guess. I guess everyone should be prescribed prozac so we can just walk around like zombies and not get mad at things or be happy about things

I will let this go after this but again you are missing the point. I can uderstand being upset he left. But the actual hatred and revisionist history was over the top. Being upset is one thing, I get it, though there are reports that the parting was mutual. My issue is with calling the kid a "quitter, female sex organ, etc becuase he transfered. If the act of transfering in season is that deplorable, than yes you can't embrace a kid that did the same thing. That is my point. And again I enjoyed watching him so I am not in the good riddance camp.

It is a little eye-opening yes, but mid-season transferring is becoming more and more preveleant in college basketball. If we're gonna lose guys midseason, then we have to be willing to risk taking on others to fill those gaps.

I used to bash mid-season transferring, but not anymore.

I for one am over the fact that Nurideen bounced. I've never even hated on him on these boards or anywhere else for that matter. However some people deal with things by verbalizing on message boards their feelings both good and bad. I don't like that some people still are on Nurideens ass a month after he left, but if that's how they handle things so be it. On that note, we are all SJU fans, and I think we should all be happy that we are getting a top 50 point guard who will help us out in practice immediately. Nurideen is gone, Jamal is here. Let's go SJU!!

They quit for different reasons.

The Lindsey and Branch situations are not even close. First, there is the age difference....18 v. 22/23.

Branch stayed committed to a team for like four years, even after they changed staffs. Nuri, well he QUIT (not transferred) on two high school teams (lasted less than a month at South Kent)..he committed to Lasalle then he QUIT on Lasalle...he went to another college and transferred....then he came to St. John's and QUIT on them before the semester was over. He quit on St. John's when we had SIX other scholarship players and he didn't even wait until Garrett would be eligible. That is dirty. He could have played another EIGHT games and still would have been eligible to play for another school after Fall 2012. The fact that Lindsey couldn't bridge the game or two to Garrett is inexcusable in my book.

Kids transfer...it happens. A lot of times it is a smart move. We didn't give Cedric Jackson crap for transferring. But Cedric NEVER would have left six scholarship players, four of them freshman starters, to fend for themselves. Nuri was a freaking starter! We had no PG even on the recruiting radar!! Branch was recruited over by the same team he remained loyal too. I think Branch is a nice talent, but Reese is a better looking prospect for sure. That would have been splitsville at best.

I wish Nuri the. best where ever he goes Frankly I do not judge any kid for leaving if he feels fit is not for him. I do not care why a talent left another school for us The staff can deal with personalities If he helps us that fine

You have no dea what Cedric would have done just like you have no idea why Landsay left. You guys that project people's motives and reasons kill me; the parting with Lindsey was very mutual so to use the word quit like he deserted buddies in a fox hole is just nonsense.

Good to know you have inside info on Nuri's departure. Maybe you can fill us in on the Polee fiasco too? The whole point is that this program didn't need another hit after the recruiting class went south. Especially in view of Lavin's illness. Hey, we're not out of the woods yet and are an injury or two away from playing walkons when we dumped Ron Roberts, Quincy Roberts, Walker and the PG that went to Manhattan. That could make us look a little dumb. Wouldn't you agree? On the plus side Calhoun went through the prostate thing and them won a national championship. So did Boeheim and he might do the same this year. So maybe things aren't as shaky as they seem. We'll see.

No Polee fiasco, mutual parting of ways. Kid wasn't exactly the hardest worker is what I heard but who knows what the story is.

I have no problem with players transferring at anytime for any reason since it's the only bit of power the system gives them and even then it's not much.

But Jamal and Nuri are in two different worlds.

Not only did the A&M staff recruit J-Mychal Reese over Jamal (who committed to the previous staff), but they hired Mr. Reese to get the commitment. The writing was on the wall. Jamal was destined to be a backup his whole career at A&M.

Nuri was given the keys from day one.
