Nuri Leaving

Thanks guys. I knew Pelle was in Philly, I didn't realize Sampson and Amir were. I thought they were on campus? I knew Pelle and Amir were academic questions long before summer, but I had thought Sampson was a bit if a surprise, no? Either way, things look bad.

Moose, would you care to elaborate on the connection between Nuri and the Rise 'scandal' or is it just people trying to blame our staff for more things? As someone who doesn't know the inner workings of the program, Coach Lavin has made us a national figure and brought attention back into our program. The guys is recovering from cancer, and it is insane to expect him to put SJU bball over his life. It is unfortunate that kids feel that way. Lavin isnt going anywhere so idk how kids for the future or kids already here are judging on him missing time now.

I would be really curious to know the others take, ie, Moe, Sir'Dom etc. It has to be frustrating that they came in with all these expectations of what would happen and its been everything but. I feel bad for those guys since they have done eevrything asked of them and all could have played anywhere they wanted.

I am also curious as to Lavin's take. I trust Lavin, (the staff idk about). The staff has not proved themselves to me really.

Nuri never impressed me besides his awesome dribble drive he showed against Zona but other than that he really didnt show me much else. He has to understand that there is no depth on the team, meaning you cant be so aggressive on every drive to the hoop. plus he is also a foul magnet...if the coaches didnt sit him as much he would have fouled out with like 10min left in each game.........peace out nuri!!

They weren't qualified to play the first semester, garrett went on to get his grades and become eligible. the other 2 decided on a different route. What could they have done differently?

What could the staff have done differently????

Not send them all to the same summer school for starters.

Agreed but Lavin has to take the hit for that one. Regardless of who arranged them to go there no way Lavin didn't know about it and he has been around the game long enough to know what to do with these kids. Takes a ding on it and moves on to more rebuilding

Still our 3 were the 1st kids ever to not get approved out of Rise I thought. That's just unreal.

With Nuri who knew. Cant predict what just happened with him it's so crazy

You got some of your info mixed up. Amir was the surprise. Pelle and Jakarr were kind of known about.

And as for blaming the staff. If you don't know I can arguably be Lavin's biggest fan. I've wanted him as coach since 2002 and have always talked him up. I do think they dropped the ball big time on Rise. I still stand by the staff but LJSA alluded to what I was talking about with someone taking the fall.

Exactly. Split them up at three different reputable schools, and I'm pretty damn sure Garrett would be on our roster already. Not sure about others, though.

Sorry about that Moose, I knew one of them was a surprise. I also never realized they were all together. Could you elaborate on why you think all 3 of them going to the same place was bad? I mean I can infer obvious reasons, but I don't know enough about this.

I also love Lavin. I wanted him to be our coach and I think hes the best. He is perfect for NYC and this school. I just have a lot of questions about the rest of the staff. It seems all they have done is prohibited us from getting some recruits bc of HS ties, and not done a great job recruiting. Without Lavin they don't seem to have any clue what is going on.

I will try and find LJSA's earlier post.

Your pretty much inviting the NCAA to look at the 3 kids when they are all in the same place. It just was not smart at all. No way to slice it.

Was on my way to the Ranger game when I found out about this so I didn't read too much about it or think too much about it, but now that I'm home and was able to read more into it I'm fired up. Nuri quit on his "brothers." I'm so tired of these divas and their "people" thinking they always know what's best. To the jackasses on that facebook post, I'd love to see your basketball resume. It's probably about as extensive as mine. I have so much I wanna say about this but I'm too annoyed to even put it into words right now. I root for the name on the front of the jersey, not the back, so good f***ing riddance Nuri, I certainly will not be wishing you well. Coward.

And also, people really need to slow down with the "the sky is falling, we'll never return to prominence, maybe the coaching staff isn't as great as we thought" crap (not referring to your comments about Rise, Moose). Anybody with half a brain knew that the position Norm left us in would require a fairly long process to make it back. People were ready to jump ship after the Fordham game last year. By the end of last season, many people were saying it was the most enjoyable season they've ever endured as a St. John's fan. People were claiming this staff was one of the absolute best, if not THE best, in the nation. When Kobe and other NBAers were on campus working out this summer, you guys couldn't get enough of it. Now 4 months later and we're never gonna return to prominence. Look, I understand the extreme turn of events in the past few months has been extremely disheartening and extremely frustrating, but it was NEVER about this year. It was never even so much about next year either. It is and always was about the future of this program, we all knew that, and I see no reason why the future still isn't as bright as we all thought it was over the summer. So why the change of attitude with everyone now? Big time hoops programs deal with this crap all the time, it's just not as big of a deal to them because they're not in the very early stages of a complete rebuild.

The point is, regardless of the Big East crap, Lavin's health, and all the ineligibles/decommits/etc over the past few months, I still firmly believe this staff deserves the benefit of the doubt, because they really haven't given us a reason to believe otherwise. Again, remember where we were a year and a half ago. 10 seniors to replace. Apathetic fan base after one of the worst stretches in this programs 100+ year history. Big time school's to compete against in recruiting. Then think about what Lavin and staff did in such a short period of time, with the season we had last year, to the recruits (current and future) that we never would have imagined eve being mentioned with, the absurd amount of publicity we've gotten, the amount of nationally televised games, the huge spike in attendance . We hit some speed bumps on the road back to prominence, but it's a long road and we're gonna get there. There's no doubt in my mind.

Come on with this. This is exactly what I'm talking about.

Been in the library all day so this is the first chance I've had to comment on this but Nuri is the type player that doesn't help win you basketball games. All he cared about was himself and his NBA chances. His family's distasteful comments reflect that sentiment. They just wanted Nuri to look like a star the last two games on national TV. Nevermind that our only chance of not getting completely obliterated by Kentucky was to slow the tempo, All Nuri cared about was that he couldn't wildly drive into the lane and draw fouls. Unfortunately with Kentucky's uber-athletic crafty big-men that would have resulted in us losing by 50. Calling Dunlap out on this issue is also completely off base. Did Nuri or his family watch the team play last year? All we did was wind the clock down then have Hardy, Paris or DJ make a play. Unfortunately Nuri is so one-dimensional on offense that when he sees a zone he is rendered ineffective at the end of a shot-clock.

Lavin himself said during the Kentucky game that he loved the pace we were playing at and that was part of HIS plan. Lavin is the one gameplanning these games, not Dunlap. Blaming Dunlap is a lame excuse for quitting on your team and supposed "brothers." Forget Nuri, we have 6 team players on this squad that I'm willing to stand behind and I hope others are as well. We have 6 guys who want to be here and one more hopefully coming in a week. We may not have any depth or size but our 6 guys have is heart, character and determination and in the end great things will happen for them. As for Nuri, good luck making a D-League team, since he's mastered the college 3 I'm sure he won't have a problem making 3's from NBA distance.

According to the Daily News, Nuri wasn't at practice yesterday because he was filming a commercial? What the hell? Can there be a more selfish act than that?

I heard it was a commercial where he had to sink a free throw at the end, took 4 takes.

Who are we to judge his actions? Maybe this is a career move for him that will pay dividends. Maybe this is the biggest mistake of his life. This kid has been through more adversity at a young age than many middle aged guys on this board have. Let's cut him and break and move on and hope it works our perfectly for both parties.

If you're part of a team then act like it. He clearly puts him self before the team. Happy he's no longer around to be honest. We don't need that type of thinking spreading on this team.

It appears their is more to the story than meets the eye. He said all nice things about St John's the staff and the team, but Lavin seems to be in agreement with the move?????

I am not saying I am happy with his actions...I am not happy at all. But, for whatever reason, he can't cut it here and therefore, shouldn't be here any longer. I am sure there is more to this than we know.

 Don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out the back-door... C - O - W - A - R - D.

And insulting a young KID who may be confused and making a big mistake says what about your character? Calm down, it is only college basketball. He isn't a pro player. They are called amateurs for a reason.
