Nuri Leaving

Program is falling apart fast

Yes. Tragedy. St. John's basketball future hinges on the transfer of a kid who was here for less than a semester.

Hurts for this season; minimal impact after that.

4 decommitments in 3 months, disappointment of current players, now this transfer, just wait till the rumors on Lavin start

if it was one of the freshman and not a 22 yr old soph with a ton of baggage that was leaving you might have a point. But the other 3 werent just "decommits" one is coming back and they didnt have the grades to begin with. Stop stirring sht up

Well said...take the negativity elsewhere Black Cloud

I have been a life long St Johns basketball fan! But IMO, I don't EVER see St. Johns being prominent in Basketball ever again. with or without Lavin. The Big East mess, the de commits, EMPTY ARENAS, poor teams, I just don't see it. I hope I'm wrong, GOD i hope i'm wrong. But i just don't see it. Why would players want to come to a team that plays in an arena that gets filled with the other teams fans? Everyone here says "Recruits will play on the big stage MSG" what big stage if people don't come to support the team? The turnout by our fans at Garden this year was disgusting ( i was at both games). I also think one day the ACC will be hosting their conference tourney at MSG. I also know MSGs and STJ rental contract is going to be up this or next year, who is to say MSG will say no to agreeing to another contract because of poor ticket sales? They might be able to make more money renting the arena for other events. As i said i hope I'm wrong...

How many times does it have to be said that the two MSG games this year weren't STJ home games. Our fickle fan base just won't go out of their way. Wasn't our attendance jump last year the biggest in D1 or something. And your talking about empty arenas? Did you check out the Jimmy V Classic this week at MSG? Crowd was even worse. And thats for a damn charity. Welcome to NY and how its people operates.

Moose - and every year before last? i been going to st johns games since i was 10 i am now 26. I know how NYC operates. I been to every Duke STJ game at the Garden i could remember it being pretty even amongst the fan bases and it was HOME GAME for us! I think our best years are past us.. If you agree with me or not, it doesn't bother me. i will still be going to st johns games in the good and bad as i have for the past 16 years with my brother....

Your 26, I'm 29. The team has sucked for the better part of our years as fans. Last year we just scratched the surface. We are having some serious bumps in the road right now. I have some issues with what the staff has done. But by god we are pointed in such a better direction than anything either of us has seen and many here have seen in a long long time.

also what team in the jimmy v classic is new york based? NONE! We are indeed in the city and couldn't get a good turnout...

Moose- i agree with you about being in the right direction, but man all this bad news over the past few months has really got me thinking. from being at such a HIGH last year to being at an all time low this year and it just started. maybe I'm overthinking it and should just go to sleep. St. John's For LIFE

Doesn't matter. Still had 4 very good teams. NY fans are fickle and those events are practically a waste of money to put on. If the AZ and A&M game were part of ticket package our fans wouldn't have said a word about higher price and shown up like any other game. Personally I would forget playing in the CVC or NIT and go play in Charleston like next year, Maui, Puerto Rico, Orlando, and get on TV and in other markets.

Nuri's old enough to make his own decisions but facts are facts and unless he was flunking academically he quit on his teammates.

I wish him the best but I think he's getting bad advice from the people close to him.

He should have had a long talk with Justin Burrell and Sean Evans and how things turned out for both of them last year

Maybe I'm nuts but between the Rise stuff and Nuri someone might have to take the fall for both........

Moose, you think someone of note on the staff has to go? Or do we just need new academic advisors around the program?

No matter how you slice it, Nuri leaving under these circumstances is as disrespectful and unprofessional as you can get. I don't know what else you call it when you're (a) leaving your so called "beloved teammates" when they are shorthanded as it is (b) turning your back on your coach. If you aren't happy with the current situation, fine. Play your hardest, finish out the season, and put in your transfer papers. A mature young man does not turn around and quit because things did not exactly turn out as he hoped.

Despite my opinion, I really do wish him well. I hope to God he finds what he is looking for. Based on his comments, I'm not sure even he knows the answer to that question. I hope he finds a program he is comfortable with and becomes the player that most scouts think he can be. As for SJU, I hope the coaches are focused on bringing in the right players for next year's team. We took some chances in last year's recruiting class and seemingly every one of them has blown up in our face. If the staff wants to go after top end talent for next year, obviously no one will be opposed. But I think it is also important that we bring in some guys who will be here for the long haul. Who may be far from ready in their first or second year, but by their third they are contributing on a nightly basis. That is they key to any successful program and I hope SJU buys into it.

Redken on Yeats
Was he referring to British or Irish basketball at the time? nice quote, classy site, let's enjoy the kids we have, I like the talent etc. it's too late in the night to be negative.

all the best

On second thought, a humbler poet, Clarence Williams, may have had a better read on the state of our basketball program: "My bucket's got a hole in it."

Whatever, we sure could use some good news.

I can't speak for Moose, but the guy who was most familiar with Nuri and arranged for Rise is also well liked in New York City, so it's a tough call.

I have been watching st johns since the early 70's and been to hundreds of games on campus and at the Garden, and if put a quality st johns team on the court, the place is fiilled and rockin with st john's fans.

Per twitter he did speak to Sean Evans. In fact, Sean Evans, and Hardy both explicitly supported Nuri on their twitter pages. Malik Boothe's twitter said something to the effect of people now jumping off the SJU bandwagon.

My biggest gripe is the negative on SJU. As this board already knows, I was not a huge Nuri fan. If we had the pelles, Garretts and Sampsons already here, with Wood and Gathers coming in, I would have continued to be annoyed that he gets PT, kind of like I used to get furious when Malik Boothe was brought in.

Also, I have seen Wood videos of his games, he looks very good. Kid can shoot, pass, and handle the ball. Him and Garrett seem to have great chemistry together.

Can someone explain this Rise?

Rise is the Philly prep school that Garrett, Pelle and Sampson attended during the Summer, in attempts to qualify. All 3 got A's in all three classes that each took. The grades were not accepted by the NCAA and they did not qualify to play this year. Since the coaching staff, presumably, was responsible for placing theme there, some feel that they should take heat for the end result.

They weren't qualified to play the first semester, garrett went on to get his grades and become eligible. the other 2 decided on a different route. What could they have done differently?

What could the staff have done differently????

Not send them all to the same summer school for starters.
