Norvel Pelle

Per Jeff Goodman, it looks like Norvel is headed to UNLV

I am always suspicious when people post what I am about to post, but I really doubt any harm can come from it.

I live very close to the Phelps school in Malvern PA and ran into a person VERY familiar with the program and Norvel. This person told me three things. (four things actually, but I think it would be unfair to post this persons personal opinions on Norvel). 1) Norvel has not been playing much at Phelps 2) As a basketball person for many years, Norvel has one of the largest wing spans he has ever seen and 3) he is pretty confident that he has a "deal worked out with a school out west, but not in CA".

Take it for what it's worth. This sources kids my kids play hoops together and I know him pretty well, I just didn't know how close he was to the
Phelps school until this past weekend.

Norvel calling the commitment rumors lies on twitter. I'm not sure I believe Norvel though. Often there is plenty of truth behind the scenes, even if he hasn't committed just yet.

It is just a matter of time until he commits to UNLV. The SDSU fans are going nuts. They can't believe he is reneging on them (I didn't even know he committed there LOL)

As a person with a heart, I hope the kid gets his act together but I have a feeling he will never play a game at UNLV.

Goodman did the retracto move later on after Neil Nieves questioned it:

My bad for the confusion on Novel Pelle. He has NOT committed to UNLV, but sources indicate he is leaning towards Running Rebs.

I also have a feeling he may never suit up for UNLV or any, other college for that matter.

Were Norvel's classes in that bad of shape? It's been discussed ad nauseum, but I figured one extra year would get it done. 3200+ tweets'll getcha! If someone told Norvel they'd pay him 1 million dollars to sit down and only do hw and practice basketball for the next year, I wonder what his response would be...

He doesn't want to do either unfortunately.

I thought he was taking the year and focusing on Academics and not playing any ball. If he still not eligible after this year his academics must of been in extremely bad shape.

Or he's not "getting better" this year in the academic arena. I love that cliche. Players use it all the time now, but how many really do get that much better or merely pay lip service to it?

In the end it is as much his own motivation as it is his grades and that is why I don't think he will play for any major program next year.

Sad.

It wouldn't be the first time that it's happened, and it certainly won't be the last, either. Hopefully the kid gets his head screwed on correctly, because he has a lot of potential.

I could see him putting up crummy stats at a D-II school six years from now just as easily as I can see him blocking 3.5 shots a game at UNLV two years from now. The choice is his.

It would have been great to have him here, but at this point I'm almost relieved that he's someone else's problem. At least we have Garrett, who has enough heart for both himself and Pelle.

Maybe if he got off twitter and did his schoolwork he'd be in Queens... UNLV, aren't they "creative"  in getting players or is that just when Tark was there?

UNLV just like SDSU play in conferences that allow partial qualifiers. So both attractive options for Pelle.

Pelle has not committed to anyone at this point. He was rumored to be pretty solid to SDSU, but it was just a rumor, just like the UNLV interest is.

FYI, SDSU took a pass on Jabari Brown - they didn't want to chance his baggage knowing that his commitment would already upset some of the new guys coming in. SDSU really needs bigs more than guards right now.

As you guys know, SDSU is coming to the Big East for football, but that also means their basketball program will need to go to the Big West. I think some UNLV fans are trying to play off that move as being less attractive for Pelle, although UNLV's conference (MWC) will take a big blow in hoops when SDSU leaves too (BYU also just left).

FYI, the MWC is 11-3 against the Pac-12 this year in hoops.
