NIL’s

All this talk about "retention" / compensation - plus the "slow" day with work... has me wanting to Play GM.

Not diving into too much research, i leave that for Mase and DK lol, going off reported rumors and our friends from Marquette here - https://painttouches.com/2024/08/01/ncaa-nil-data-shows-mens-basketball-players-highest-earners/ - how i would shape our roster.

From numbers reported here... as well the Trilly discord/ X - sphere... believe this season we are working with a 3.5mm Budget - with Kadary pulling in 1mm...

From top earners in the Sport- Bacot from UNC reported getting 2mm - rumors of Coleman Hawkins and Osbor from UW getting 2mm... seems to be a premium on Bigs. From that Marquette article which borrows data from the NYT (so who knows if it can be trusted lol) - average P4 bball player rakes 175k$

With our Success this year- Yes- we will be successful- positive mental attitude! - I will be working with a 4mm$ Budget:
Zuby: 1.1 mm (home discount)
RJ: 1mm (think we need to reach that to get him to stay)
Sim: 300k
Brady: 200k
Jaiden: 200k
Prey: 200k
Lefty: 150k
Maker: 150k

that puts us at 3.3mm.... need atleast 3 more bodies... 1 of them being a Stud.

I welcome consultants to opine...

Are you accounting for the additional 1m we get from the Vegas NIL tourney?

I think Sim and Prey would also get more

IMHO, i think Brady leaves after this year. May not be for more money, but more playing time.

i think Sim has to reach $350k.

like i said in the other chat, the states of TX and FL, scare me for Zuby and RJ. i can see the 'hometown teams' of Baylor and Miami U, going hard after each.

i thought i saw Deivon had one more year?

I am not... that's why I hired you as a consultant.
The Vegas NIL tourney will make a big difference in retention, I think. You would also hope that a bunch of exciting MSG games in January/February/March get donors to give more -- quite literally to keep these guys since the proof of concept as a top 25 team is here right now. So maybe we're working with a NIL budget closer to 5 mill.

Deivon Smith is a big question. I don't know if he's eligible, and I don't know if it'll require some court case thing. But he's another guy who's probably worth 750k or so. I think we got him at a discount because of the eligibility stuff.

I don't think we should dismiss any blue blood from dropping a huge bag from our guys, but we're also a great situation for these kids.

I am not worried about Zuby, I think he's committed to RP and the $$ will be there. But, Luis, I think he goes pro or to the highest bidder.....
i agree. but i don't think RJ is a draft pick. i think he'll test nba waters, get feedback, and to your point, go to the highest bidder.

In the opinion of the members on this site, who would be the number 1 stud St. John's should make a priority next year? Would Ian Jackson be in the conversation?

based on how this past year transpired, i think RP will go after a top 3/5 upperclassmen transfer stud. someone like Ian is great, but i think RP prefers experience.

Agree on this 100%, and I think that's where having Rick is a big asset. These kids enjoy playing for Rick and i think that's the x factor that allows us to retain our top players. Bags are going to be thrown at Zuby and RJ by other teams.

We've been interested in Jackson for awhile. If Jackson's in the portal, which prob won't be the case, he has to be the #1 target

I'm not worry about this stuff until after the season. I know we have people on it internally. You can only control what you can control.

And I contribute to Flat Top so there's that.

I do think a positive experience, both personally and athletically, goes a long way in these decisions. Many of our returning kids seem to be having that, and benefiting as basketball players from one of the best teachers around. If my goal is to play professional basketball at the highest level I can and have the best career doing that, I'm still putting Pitino at the top of the list (with a handful of others). That carries weigh no doubt in this stuff.

I was thinking that the Pitino connections and professional network might give us a potential financial discount and access to players that otherwise wouldn't look our way...

When you are 20 yrs old and 15 years ahead of you to play for money... hopefully kids and their network recognize a couple hundred thousand dollar difference at this age could* be worth it.... See the Forest for the trees as they say...

but can completely understand kids at this age taking the money Now.... will be interesting.
