NIL’s

Most of these kids were never students to begin with and now don’t even have to pretend to be.
And the NCAA has not cared for some time. Think about it, when was the last time you heard of a college athlete being ineligible due to poor grades? Let’s see, for me it was about 50 years ago. And colleges are as much to blame as they are more concerned about their bottom line then the future or welfare of any of their athletes.

I never thought I would see the day where college athletics would have sunken lower than that of professional sport franchises.
It's too subjective and too big a stretch to say most don't care about their academics.

How about if I changed that to “a good portion of them”? Even going back around 50 years when one notable player was in one of my classes and showed up maybe once in 20 plus classes (and this was during the Coach Multzoff time). I later saw him and asked him how he did in the class and his response was “what class?” When I named the class and described it he still didn’t know what I was talking about.

While I was in DC to see the Georgetown game, I stopped by to see my friend Kenny Blakeney who is the head coach at Howad University. His teams have won their conference tournament championship the past two years. After the first one, their top three players transferred. Here is where it gets interesting, his point guard, Elijah Hawkins, puts his name in the portal and eventually commits to Minnesota. He got a small NIL deal, but he wasn't getting anything at Howard.

This past season he was second in the nation in assists. A young man who played for me and is now an Asst coach in the A10, stopped by my house yesterday. While we were talking, Hawkins name came up and he told that the young man was back in the portal asking for 700K and will definitely get at least 500K.

Here is where it gets interesting. Coming out of DeMatha HS, Hawkins was a lightly recruited 5'10 150 lb PG. whose only scholarship was Howard. Now, after working on and improving his game, he is poised to make at least half a million dollars this upcoming season.

As much as I personally dislike the portal, I have nothing but respect for what this young man has accomplished.
Panther , good post about Howard Univ and it’s BB program . You gave me the impetus to do a little Research about the School.

While I did know that Howard is a HBCU and a deserved reputation as a Premier Academic Institution , I didn’t know their Players are being sought out in the Portal . And , why shouldn’t they be?

Your friend Kenny Blakeney has obviously built a team that has Won the last 2 League Championships .

But , like other Schools Howard has bern hurt by the Portal but , the players have benefitted .

Enough about BB . It was interesting to learn that Howard is in the vicinity of having over a $ 800 million dollar Endowment with a short term Goal of getting that to $ 1 billion in the very near future .
That’s more than St John’s by the way , just to give dimension to their Assests .
Howard has a long list of very distinguished Alumni, befitting it’s status as a higher institution of learning for well over 100 years .

Admittance to the School is highly competitive and it’s not cheap to attend either . Putting it beyond many who would like to enroll . The large Endowment helps but , isn’t a total answer .

Incidentally , Howard does admit White students , 2 percent of the Student body but , other minorities as well .

I’m glad I was stirred to learn more about Howard by your post . Thank you .

Do we know Taylor wanted to stay and was told to leave or based on last season, did he see no pathway for an increase in PT in his last year and decided to go elsewhere to seek more PT?
I'm not gonna dig up old posts / twitter etc... But i remember* when he entered, there was word he Wanted* to stay. He even made the statement on his "Leaving" post- that he would leave the option to Return to StJ is possible...

I don’t recall any old post saying he wanted to stay and leaving as an option of returning to St. John’s wouldn’t be possible if he was told to leave.

Note: Brandon Gardner asked for his release (his choice) from his LOI and at the time he said resigning with St. John’s was possible.

Taylor did say something in his post on entering the portal that he was not ruling out coming back to St. Johns but there was absolutely no implication that he was told to enter the portal rather than it being his decision. I think he was almost certainly looking for some reassurance that going into his senior year he'd get more playing time and likely that wasn't forthcoming. Hopefully he lands in a good spot; obviously a team first guy and a good player in the right situation.

Taylor’s statement on April 2nd.

Now back to our regularly scheduled NIL programming.

The pricetag to Big East is $5.4 - 6.6 million annually for 10 years, or $500-600k per school each year.

For us, throw that number on top of the cost of a new practice facility, which will be a major budget item in the upcoming capital fund raising campaign, spiralling NIL costs to field a competitive team, and what to do about an aged home court arena where 80% of fans sit in uncomfortable seats with poor ventilation. Then there is the $11 million Anderson is suing SJU for.

In 1800 days or less, we will be full throttle searching for a replacement for a head coach. The equivalent of the "bargain" salary for Pitino will not be an option.

Of course, St John's will ask more from donors to balance the books, but the question remains if the program can rise to the "haves" from the ranks of the "have nots". The futures of DePaul and Seton Hall are bleak. The Jesuit schools all raise lots of money, as does UCONN and Nova. Will the Big East even exist in ten years.

Yes we are headed in the right direction, but it remains to be seen if we won't be overtaken by the monstrous costs of running a winning basketball program with sustained success? Already there is almost nothing collegiate about the professional athletes competing in revenue producing sports.

All that is clear is that the landscape is changing so rapidly that the taunted ACC is crumbling before our eyes. Shanley has gambled a lot of donor $$ in pursuit of winning, but over the past year alone the stakes have risen considerably.
