NIL’s

The Memphis / Fedex NIL deal is big -$5 million per year plus an additional $2.5 million in matching NIL funds. And it's all aimed at getting Memphis into a Power 5 conference.

The annual $5 million NIL contribution from FedEx also includes a 50% match clause, according to Veatch. He said the university will start a campaign to raise an additional $2.5 million per year, and "we believe that is very attainable based on where we’ve been in the past."

University officials have not been shy about their efforts to move Memphis out of the American Athletic Conference and into a "power" league.

Are there any other major public companies known to be participating in NIL at high levels like this ?

Couldn’t care less players are getting paid, but reading all of this you have to think the short term gain of this income is going to have a negative long term impact on a lot of them. It is also fostering a deceitful and treacherous way that may not be directly on them due to handlers or agents but nonetheless something they are apart of.

Just my two cents but if I was 21 and had $700K in the bank I’d blow it all on drugs and hookers. Drugs were cool back in my day, they’re probably lame now so substitute whatever the hell kids do nowadays for recreational drug use.

Where are the University presidents speaking up & out? Other than Dartmouth, (for obvious reasons) there is overall silence from the academia side.
Many College Presidents aren’t worth $1.5 million to begin with.
Number 2, a lot of them seem like absolute zeros in Managing their Schools . In that respect , they are a lot like Politicians …
Number 3 many of them no sqat about Sports or Athletics . Fr Shanley a notable exception
Number 4 , many of them get their jobs through Alumni connections or, how much $$$$ can they raise for the School . To think they have other capabilities often proves they don’t .

Number 6 , need I go on ..

Perhaps Pitino’s wants were bigger than his pocketbook? Top tier kids are being thrown ridiculous amounts of money. Now PC seems to be banking on second tier kids and I bet they do OK with them.

What I'm feeling from the process is that even if STJ thought it had equal funds to the big boys two things have changed or were not fully understood. First, these big schools have guys who are used to throwing more money at the university when asked so budgets have grown in a way that the STJ alumni base is not conditioned to respond to. Second is that STJ, being what it is which is not a widely recognized national power, will have to pay a premium to offset the allure of the high major behemoths, despite the presence of a HOF coach, and I'm not sure the staff or supporters want to pay above market rates.

Would think your last point is offset by Pitino factor but who knows

We were probably working off of last years NIL numbers which have obviously risen. It has gone from Repole lunch money to dinner at a 5 star restaurant.

I would say that they're answering the phone because of Pitino, but it's not the be all and end all to them. Maybe they see a guy who hasn't been in the Sweet Sixteen in ten years, when they were 9-12 years old. To me it seems to me that very few of the top tier portalers are strongly considering BE schools despite the all star lineup of coaches.

Makes a lot of sense

What’s coming along now is that the big money, “state” schools will buy their championships while others especially mid majors are left behind. That’s one reason I believe bringing UConn back in the league was an asinine move at best.

Ed O'Bannon ready to go postal
He's sorta the grandfather of NIL. He's class action lawsuit that said the NCAA was violating anti-trust laws really paved the way to the current landscape. I'm sure he is happy that athletes are getting paid for their labor. I'm not sure if he could have anticipated "collectives" etc though.

Unless you meet he is going postal because if he was a 20 year old now he'd be set for life, in which case, yep, I get it! :D

I mean, how many guys lost eligibility or programs punished for utter and complete bull crap that must be absolutely livid. Guys who starred in college who never made it in the pros. The game, and I mean the “game” in The Wire terms, not the actual game of basketball, has changed so quickly and abruptly, it’s insane. A whole ‘nother animal.

Erik Barkley was raked over the coals by the gutless NCAA

They also need to limit it to one transfer per player otherwise there will never be a way to build a consistent team from year to year. You bring in a kid on transfer develop him into a better player and he simply looks to leave again after the year for a bigger pay day.

That can’t happen at this point. The answer is player contracts, which can be crafted to benefit both school and player. Contracts can include incentives, yearly increases and penalties for breaking them.

Should we scrap the practice facility and take the millions and put them into NIL? I’m kidding (kind of). Of course SJU puts money into a coach and a new facility well all the players care about is $ now.
