Interesting that Nimmo met with batting coach, Roessler, on his off day. They discovered he was swinging underneath the ball. Well a few days earlier Keith Hernandez claimed that Nimmo was dropping his back shoulder and swinging underneath the ball. Is it me or do you think both Hernandez and DArling could take over as hitting and pitching coaches.?
I think that at this point in his life Keith wouldn't want to commit to the daily grind of February till October of coaching. I also think he is old school in every way, and would have a hard time tolerating behaviors and work ethic of today's players. I think he wold be a terrific coach and manager, except that he'd probably also be pretty damned cantankerous.
Favorite Hernandez story from eons ago, maybe 1984 or so. Darling was either a rookie or second year, and on the mound. He had shaken off the catcher for or 5 times in a row who was calling for breaking balls or sliders. Hernandez called time out, jogged to the mound, and said to Darling, "If you shake him off one more time, or throw a fastball, I'm coming back to the mound and will beat the shit out of you right here." Darling read Keith as serious and complied.
Hernandez taught that team how to win. Carter made them championship caliber. But it was Keith's team, Best fielding first basemen I've ever seen, and despite not having massive offensive numbers to me belongs in the HOF and by far is the best position player ever to play for the Mets.
The story I remember involved Jesse Orosco and Hernandez. It was the bottom of the 16th, game 6 of the NL championship series and Kevin Bass was up, with the winning runs on base. Orosco was gassed, and Hernandez told Orosco he would hurt him if he dared throw another fastball. He threw 6 or 7 sliders to Bass before striking him out on a 3-2 pitch.
