nd game

Great win!! This very well could be a identity game....ps, rumor @ the game was Sanchez could be in uni for next game!!! I hope so!!

That's a nice rumor... does that rumor come from people in the know / VIPs?

Probably from the same people that said that he would be made eligible yesterday in time to play tonight

Kids are playing hard
No way would I expect us to be ahead at halftime with Harrison only scoring 2 points
But we have absolutely no concept about fundamental defensive principles
The word HELP is non-existent in their vocabulary
We overplay kids 30 feet (or more) from the hoop, get beat off the dribble and have no help defense inside
The ND players must have been farting up a storm in the first 10-12 minutes of the game
It's the only way to explain why, at least 5 times, ND players were all alone underneath for an uncontested layup

No, we "overplay" because we chose to shut down their 3-point threat. The only reason they were soooo wide open was due to some good screens down low and some big mistakes by us. This Notre Dsme is not only a fantastic shooting team from the outside, but they are 2nd in the nation in a/to ratio.

We committed to overplay their guards and passing lanes and we have negated their outside shooting thus far. We did all that while resting Obekpa much of the first half. Is a calculated risk and we have thrown a big monkey wrench into their offensive execution. Notre Dame has already turned it over almost 10 times, because we overplay them.

We certainly need to do a better job communicating on screen/rolls etc on Cooley. Still need to be aggressive on their perimeter players.

We're gonna agree to disagree on this one, Marcus
This defense was not enacted specifically for ND, we have done it all season
We overplay people 30 feet from the basket, we get beat, our big man tries to support and they get an uncontested layup under the basket
We need to play a sagging man to man defense with weak side support, something else we're not good at
Defensively, we are a fundamentally flawed team
But, I'm thrilled with the victory and hope it gives us momentum going forward

With a sagging man-defense, Notre dame would have made 20 threes tonight and we lose by double digits. For one it is not our style. We overplayed passing lanes even more today than we did in the past, because we forced the Notre Lame team to abort their offensive sets early and reset. As I said, Notre dame gets all their assists because people play sagging man-d's and other teams get abused both inside and outside. We forced them to turn the ball over a bunch, and really disrupted their sets. It was good strategy. Their uncontested shots were only early as we got best on post screens and sloppy coverage. Overplaying Notre Dame outside the arc is essential to beating them.

Absolutely agree. Our in your face defense kept the Irish from bombing their three point shots; just look at the poor game Martin had. Kept him on the bench. Kudos to Harrison for a sound game, defensively and passing wise. Good to know that even when he's not scoring he's an important cog in the victory.

What happened with Cooley? I was at the game. didn't know what happened to him.

Nothing happened to him.

Picked up 2 early first half fouls and Brey sat him.

He made a foul on an Amir post up in the 2nd half (which I thought was an offensive foul on Amir) for his 3rd foul and Brey sat him for the est of the game.

Their best player regardless how slow-footed he is. You don't sit him like that. I can only think that Brey was trying to prove some stupid point or send a message. Idiotic on his behalf.

I don't think D'Angelo blocks Knight's shot if it was Cooley instead.

Agree that Amir got away with what looked like an obvious offensive foul. Couldn't believe that he, not Cooley, got the call, but will certainly take it. Had a big impact on the game's outcome.

Glad Branch is getting a lot more playing time; didn't like the floater at the end, but everything else was great.

Good to see D'Lo take a few less shots for the betterment of the team; had some sweet passes too.

Great win for the team morale, especially after losing the big lead. Seeing some fight after they got down really gets you pumped about their potential, but let's see if we can string together a few before getting too excited.

Dee was a little too tentative tonight honestly. Especially down the stretch. Him getting to the line would have eased the tension down the stretch.

Team chemistry tonight was as good as I've seen. Dee is used to carrying the offense and me thinks he was just trying to get comfortable sharing the ball more. There were a few times towards tail end of game that I also thought he could have been more aggressive, but he seemed to be erring on the side of caution. Think we'd be a much better team with Dee averaging around 15 per game and with everyone staying in the flow as they did tonight. Hopefully we can build upon this win.

Bottom line the others were hitting shots. If they werent you would have seen him force it more. He played within himself I just think down the stretch I would have less gray hairs if he was holding the ball more.

Important win for our team! The Greene "injury" was not apparent and Branch played well for the most part. Only made 3-15 from 3 but ND was worse. Perplexing use of his players by ND Coach......good for us but some ND fans are not going to be happy. LOL!
I am happy for Sir Dom and Amir! They bounced back big time while D'Lo continued to struggle.
Lav finally using his bench better ...... Now let's hear some espanol in the huddle!

Again, we agree to disagree
If Cooley had not gotten into foul trouble and played his normal game, we would have lost by double digits playing this style of defense

If, huh? "If" grandma had balls, then she'd be grandpa. There was a reason Cooley had gotten into foul trouble. If (there goes that word again) you watched the game, then I'm sure you know the reason he was in foul trouble.

Our style of defense worked well, and kept them off-balance. There was a reason Notre Dame hit their first 3-pointer late in the game. I also believe it was their only three-pointer of the night. I haven't looked it up, but I'm bet this is the first time this season Notre Dame has hit ONLY one trey in a game. This could also be their only game where they launched less than 10.

Our defense had alot with what Notre Dame did or shall I say, didn't do, tonight.

BTW I was told Obepka had the flu and if you saw him in the few minutes he played he looked like he should be in bed. At first I thougt he broke a team rule or something but word was it was the flu. Can anyone confirm that?

Nothing was said on broadcast. Usually they get game notes from SID but maybe STJ withheld that.

It was mentioned and assumed he didn't play much to lure Cooley out of the paint and into foul trouble. I'd take credit for that if I was Lavin ;)

Just proves you can never give up... great win. Hope this kick starts our season. Just the tonic to forget the Hoya and Rutgers games.

To quote the immortal Yogi Berra, "Deja Vu all over again!!!"

Just returned from the game and yet again our season continues on as eerily similar to last year. After five conference games we have had the same results against the same opposition as we had last year. See below:

Last year we beat Cincinnati on the road by 2 and lost to Villanova in overtime in a game we could have easily won. Also we were narrowly beaten by Rutger's by 3 and were blown out by Georgetown at Home by 20. Last season we narrowly beat Notre Dame in the Garden by 3.

This year we beat Cincinnati on the road by 1 and lost to Villanova in overtime in a game we could have easily won.
Also we were narrowly beaten by Rutger's by 2 and were blown out by Georgetown at home by 16. Tonight we narrowly beat Notre Dame in the Garden by 4.

The similarity in the results seems way beyond coincidence. It is about how we match up with certain opponents and don't match up with others.

All that said it was good to get a win because a 1-4 conference record would have been hard to make a turnaround from. At 2-3 we could still have a decent season.

Tonight I sensed more urgency and defensive intensity from the team as well as better shot distribution and passing. Branch at the point makes it harder to focus only on Harrison and allows Greene to play the two where he is better suited. Additionally although Harrison scored less he played a better all around game then he has in a while.

Jon Lovitz and Donald Trump (how VIP is that?).

I heard that too. I guess we'll find out when we find out about Sanchez

Team showed a lot tonight. That blow out to the Hoyas seemed to have helped. I was impressed that they played with passion yet under control most of the game. Best game by Greene in a while. Branch showing signs that he will be a big time contributor. Dom must have read the posts that said he hasn't improved from last season. He sure looked better to me. Harrison as decoy. I liked it. He is a good passer and the smartest player on the team. A few too many ill advised and rushed threes, but he made two huge ones. Garrett brought the effort, and Sampson carried a big part of the load. The only unsettling thing is that it took all of this to get eek out a win against a team that had its best player on the bench most of the way. We don't have a lot of margin for error. Best part of the game was the queasy, nervous feeling I had the last 5 minutes of the game. It feels good to still care about the team.

Mea culpa on Pointer's jumper. I've criticized his release on his jumper before, but tonight he hit something like 4 out of 5 jumpers this game. He's making me eat my words.

I also loved Sampson's hustle play to go for that seemingly out of bounds ball that was an errant pass by the ND player.
