nd game

great win but lets not get to happy would not suprise me one bit if they throw up a stinker against depaul.

Exactly what I was thinking while reading all of these happy posters, I mean after the win @ Cincy what happened? 2 straight losses is what happened. I want to see another game like this one @ DePaul before I start to get all excited.

Wow, this board has become moron-central lately..lol... DePaul does not have a prayer against this team... Hysterical.

Enjoy this win. It was a hard played game, and a message to the faithful fans that have wavered a little (*Moose) that if you give up on these guys, you are going to miss some gems. We are a young team, an incomplete team, and we will still have rough spots and bad games. There will also be games like this, that are simply to be enjoyed, and the last minutes of last night's game were exciting, gritty, loud, and well played.

Is this an NCAA caliber team? Most likely, not this year - but there are some very nice parts.

Is this an NIT team? Probably, but even if we fall short, I won't be too disappointed. There are enough bright spots to look forward to next season

As a downer, our interior defense was pretty bad last night, giving up far too many easy uncontested layups. On the positive sign, our defense stiffened just enough in the last few minutes.

The last person anyone should be questioning about their dedication to this team is Moose. If our whole fan base showed even half of the dedication he has to the team over the years, we'd be in a lot better shape.

Thanks Room. Appreciate that.

After Gtown I was pissed. But I've also been vocal most of the year in terms of the honeymoon being off and the training wheels being off. I want results now. The excuses wear thin to me when I see the talent on the floor with all the accolades.

Last night's win was nice. Many positives. Still negatives that need to be worked on but we won a game with all the complimentary pieces playing well and our best player having a very quiet but controlled night. One game at a time but we have a nice stretch in front of us here. We're 1 game behind where we should be in the BE, but 3 games behind where we should be overall IMO.

The bolded is exactly what's wrong with the SJU fan base.

Please tell us why exactly DePaul does not have a prayer against us.

Unbelievable. You really think you're something you are not.

Absolutely right. What have we shown that indicates every single conference game isn't going to be a challenge?

To say any team doesn't have a prayer against us is just ridiculous.

I think the quote in bold was definitely over-the-top, as I believe DePaul certainly has a shot at beating the Johnnies. Even moreso, considering it's at DePaul. It's not going to be easy (nothing seems to come easy for this bunch), but it's one we should win. Will we? We'll see this weekend.

It seems you tend to side with the pessimistic view. Your prerogative. Everybody is wired a certain way. As, I stated a couple of weeks ago.... I'd prefer to hear from the optimists versus hearing the pessimists.

Pessimist?

He said DePaul doesn't have a prayer against us. I asked him why. What has this team shown for him to say that?

Comments like his are why people get so disappointed after a loss because they think we can just walk into any gym across America and take teams out.

Has he even watched DePaul play this year?

Many of your posts suggest you're a pessimist. That is why I stated you tend to come off like one.

Do you get disappointed after losses because of a few, overzealous fans hyping us up to win a game? I think folks who get disappointed after losses are due to their own beliefs and expectations of the team. I have my doubts it's due to other folks hyping up the Johnnies.

As, for the poster who stated DePaul doesn't have a prayer.... I believe I have a good idea about him. He's generally been over-the-top concerning the Johnnies. Some things he's said have been headscratchers. I can't say I've agreed with all of his over-the-top optimism. This is based on who I think is 'Mr. Jones.' Nevertheless, he's an optimist.

I'm not a pessimist because I don't believe DePaul doesn't have a prayer against us.

I go into games hoping we have some sort of identity on offense and play strong attacking defense.

But I never go into any game thinking they don't stand a chance against us. I've watched enough of this team to know that we're madly inconsistent to think DePaul is just some cupcake team and an easy W.

I think you shoudl know better that I wasn't. I was cautioning you the other day not to give up, and you missed a pretty good game. I know you hadn't cashed your chips, but you've been pretty vocal in your disgust all around, The stuff with administration I understand (and agree), but this is a young team that will show fashes of a very competitive group capable of playing winning bball.

Calling me out Joe3 style? I'm honored.......I guess.

Nice W, we needed that. We looked like we had more energy out there. Liked the fact that Lavin substituted more, we werent exausted at the end of the game and could make the difference between a W or L. Our FTs were much better and was happy to see Dee pass the ball and do more things when his offensive game was off. 3 pt shooting is not our stength, thaught we should take less 3s. Around the 6 min mark I thaught we started taking too much time off the cloick and had to take bad shots as time was expiring ,even had a shot clock violation at the end of the game, that could have cost us. But overall we were much better not letting the clock run down. Interesting move playing CO less, he is raw offensively. We looked much better overall. Dom has been playing better lately but has to watch his fouls. Depaul at Chicago is a winnible giame, but far from a gimme.

In regards to pessimist/optimist...why don't we all try and be realists. I am a huge fan of this team, the players we have, and the direction we are headed. Will we have more nail-biters this season, i sure think so. And will we have another game like G-Town, I think that's a possibility also. After two wins in the BE, some people keep using the term, "turn the corner," if that is the case, we are going to be going in circles all season lol. Let's hold off on that term until we string together some wins...maybe 4 out of 5? Fair?

We will continue to see mistakes but we will also see thrilling wins like last night. The parity in college basketball has been unprecedented the past few years...No team should be over-looked.

Nothing like being at the Garden during an SJU win. Best game I've been to since Hardy tip-toed the baseline vs Pitt.

Gutty win when I thought we were going to get killed.

Maybe a little karma going in 114 with Paultzman&son,Brian,Ralph&friends Gman&Kira Sayjack and Kranmars and myself.

And let's not forget the "Roll Tide" chants we started just to quiet -- and piss off -- the ND fans near us.

If, huh? "If" grandma had balls, then she'd be grandpa.

Very poor use of the if equation there MJD. If Grandma had balls you wouldn't be around. That's why you have to go with If me Auntie had balls she'd be me Uncle. Doesn't affect your very existence. ;)

BTW I was told Obepka had the flu and if you saw him in the few minutes he played he looked like he should be in bed. At first I thougt he broke a team rule or something but word was it was the flu. Can anyone confirm that?

Nothing was said on broadcast. Usually they get game notes from SID but maybe STJ withheld that.

It was mentioned and assumed he didn't play much to lure Cooley out of the paint and into foul trouble. I'd take credit for that if I was Lavin ;)

It's funny because as I was watching Cooley sit at the end I figured HE had the flu. Couldn't figure out how else to explain it.

DePaul will be the home team. Always a edge in the BE or anywhere. They also have a very good frontcourt player in Cleveland Melvin who can hurt us inside. He is a bordeline NBA prospect, maybe more than that.

I liked that Lavin limited CO'S minutes as he is a offensive liability until he can handle and shoot free throws and 8-10 foot jumpers. Also too, he is a great shot blocker but, not yet defensively adequate . He will learn to box out his man and be able to rebound eventually.

I liked the man to man better than the D that Lavin seems to like, the match up zone. The players seemed more into playing better D THAN PREVIOUSLY.

Lavin's prevent offense is still a problem until it's corrected. Perhaps he will realize it doesn't fit this team well. In games we've lost, except G'town, it contributed to our losing some late game leads.

It also seemed to me that, FINALLY, Lavin had read the scouting reports on ND and why he went man to man. It showed me he can be flexible in his coaching and not always locked into just 1 defensive scheme. It caught ND off guard and disrupted their usual play.

In a word, Lavin outcoached Brey in this game and Brey didn't adjust. Not playing Cooley at crunch time was bizarre but helped us to victory. What was he thinking? I've not seen any explanation why Cooley wasn't in there.

Obekpa needs to learn that when he helps on a screen, it is his responsibility to rotate back to his man. Not stay up at the perimeter guarding the ball handler.

We've seen this since the exhibition games.

To me it's a glaring issue. I wonder if anyone on the staff is helping him in that area because he just doesn't seem to get it.

On that subject, our guys are apparently taught not to fight through screens, and the switching creates all sorts of mismatches and lapses in coverage. The defender of the guy setting the screen is supposed to call them out and help the guy through it, even if he has to yank him through.

if you think depaul has no shot at beating st johns your living in la la land. but i hope your right and we will pull out the win as i love to see the jhonnies win . but dont forget right now we are young team and depaul does have some talent.

Well said Brian3 - and within my realisim is a certain joy over the recruits, staff and direction - as often has been written in these posts - what a refreshing change from the Jarvis/Roberts days.

I did not believe we would win this ND game - we are learning - too bad we can't take the Villa and Rutgers games back etc.

all the best
