nd game

Just back to the office after a meeting. Note from the box score that CO has been invisible. Any story? Is he playing? 1 rebound, 0 shots per ESPN. Still good to see a lead at the under 7.

he's only played a few minutes. not sure why

It seemed the strategy was to not play him as much to lure Cooley out of the paint and into foul trouble. Strategy turned out to be rousing success.

when Branch is running the show we are looking to attack a lot quicker. He still has some things on d to tighten up but he is a threat on O. The D played better w/o CO because i think they knew they were reling on him too much to cover their let ups. Today everyone had to chip in. Dlo played great tonite w/o scoring. His passing a d was tremendous tonite. Nice to see Jones contribute.

Glad Branch is getting a lot more playing time; didn't like the floater at the end, but everything else was great.

Good to see D'Lo take a few less shots for the betterment of the team; had some sweet passes too.

Great win for the team morale, especially after losing the big lead. Seeing some fight after they got down really gets you pumped about their potential, but let's see if we can string together a few before getting too excited.

Dee was a little too tentative tonight honestly. Especially down the stretch. Him getting to the line would have eased the tension down the stretch.

way to hang in after giving up the lead. If we could have shot foul shots like this against Nova and RU we could be 4-1 in the BE. What if, What if? Oh well. Rothstein tweeted during the game that St. Johns is the 3rd most athletic team in the league behind SU and UL. On SNY Welch said St. Johns needs 1 - 2 more years to reach their potential then he sees us as perennial contenders in the league if Lavin continues to recruit. So all in all a very positive day for St. Johns, with a few winnable games coming up.

Kids are playing hard
No way would I expect us to be ahead at halftime with Harrison only scoring 2 points
But we have absolutely no concept about fundamental defensive principles
The word HELP is non-existent in their vocabulary
We overplay kids 30 feet (or more) from the hoop, get beat off the dribble and have no help defense inside
The ND players must have been farting up a storm in the first 10-12 minutes of the game
It's the only way to explain why, at least 5 times, ND players were all alone underneath for an uncontested layup

No, we "overplay" because we chose to shut down their 3-point threat. The only reason they were soooo wide open was due to some good screens down low and some big mistakes by us. This Notre Dsme is not only a fantastic shooting team from the outside, but they are 2nd in the nation in a/to ratio.

We committed to overplay their guards and passing lanes and we have negated their outside shooting thus far. We did all that while resting Obekpa much of the first half. Is a calculated risk and we have thrown a big monkey wrench into their offensive execution. Notre Dame has already turned it over almost 10 times, because we overplay them.

We certainly need to do a better job communicating on screen/rolls etc on Cooley. Still need to be aggressive on their perimeter players.

We're gonna agree to disagree on this one, Marcus
This defense was not enacted specifically for ND, we have done it all season
We overplay people 30 feet from the basket, we get beat, our big man tries to support and they get an uncontested layup under the basket
We need to play a sagging man to man defense with weak side support, something else we're not good at
Defensively, we are a fundamentally flawed team
But, I'm thrilled with the victory and hope it gives us momentum going forward

Good win. Running CAPPY left me scratching my head and we promptly gave up the lead. Glad to see they fought back though.

Brey let his pride get in the way by benching Cooley. You just don't do that. He's got some serious explaining to do.

So glad to see Christian Jones finally get his number called. Wth consistent minutes, I know he'll be able to develop. I don't want a kid with his potential to get frustrated and transfer because I believe he brings a lot to the table.

According to Yahoo site, attendance was listed as 7,434
Surprisingly low
I would have expected a larger contingent of metro area ND fans to boost the numbers
Crowd seemed larger - my wife made me turn the volume on my TV down several times

With a sagging man-defense, Notre dame would have made 20 threes tonight and we lose by double digits. For one it is not our style. We overplayed passing lanes even more today than we did in the past, because we forced the Notre Lame team to abort their offensive sets early and reset. As I said, Notre dame gets all their assists because people play sagging man-d's and other teams get abused both inside and outside. We forced them to turn the ball over a bunch, and really disrupted their sets. It was good strategy. Their uncontested shots were only early as we got best on post screens and sloppy coverage. Overplaying Notre Dame outside the arc is essential to beating them.

Crowd sounded louder on TV

Pretty sure a good chunk of season ticket holders decided not to show up after the debacle against GTown. Can't say that I blame them either.

Maybe Branch's floater wasn't the smartest move, but I love that the kid penetrates. It's something we've been consistently missing thus far this season.

Hats off to Harrison and his great block of Knight and Obekpa's block off Connaughton's head. And thank you, Mike Bray, for keeping Cooley on the bench.

We build a nice lead, have momentum clearly in our favor, and we start running the "C(r)appy" offense
How many times did the announcers say that, with 8 sec left on the shot clock, we hadn't begun to look for a shot?
When you have the opponent on the ropes and "mo" on your side, keep playing and put your foot on their throat
Don't go into a shell and give them an opportunity to come back. At least, not with 6+ minutes left
Not the first time we've done that this year
I hope it's the last!!!

Team chemistry tonight was as good as I've seen. Dee is used to carrying the offense and me thinks he was just trying to get comfortable sharing the ball more. There were a few times towards tail end of game that I also thought he could have been more aggressive, but he seemed to be erring on the side of caution. Think we'd be a much better team with Dee averaging around 15 per game and with everyone staying in the flow as they did tonight. Hopefully we can build upon this win.

Again, we agree to disagree
If Cooley had not gotten into foul trouble and played his normal game, we would have lost by double digits playing this style of defense

Great win!! This very well could be a identity game....ps, rumor @ the game was Sanchez could be in uni for next game!!! I hope so!!

That's a nice rumor... does that rumor come from people in the know / VIPs?

Got into early foul trouble in first half, only played 9 minutes in first half
Got third foul fairly early in the second half and sat rest of the game
Didn't appear to be injured
He wasn't on the floor when ND made it's comeback
Looked like Brey just decided to go with the "hot" lineup down the stretch
In retrospect, probably not a good move
You win with your best players and lose with your best players IMO

Nothing happened to him.

Picked up 2 early first half fouls and Brey sat him.

He made a foul on an Amir post up in the 2nd half (which I thought was an offensive foul on Amir) for his 3rd foul and Brey sat him for the est of the game.

Their best player regardless how slow-footed he is. You don't sit him like that. I can only think that Brey was trying to prove some stupid point or send a message. Idiotic on his behalf.

I don't think D'Angelo blocks Knight's shot if it was Cooley instead.
