Like him or hate him, Kelvin Sampson can recruit and coach. Houston closing out a win over Illini.

“Kelvin Sampson just keeps Houston Cougars rolling - he's one of best in nation.
They lost 4 of 7 guys in rotation from last year's Final 4 team. Then he lost 2 of 3 guys that came back to injury - Sasser & Mack. And Sasser is a star. Sampson brought in 3 key guys from portal”

Kelvin Sampson is one of the best in the business, what he has done with a dead in the water Houston program is outstanding. Much respect for him and his teams.
Would you have been ok with SJU hiring Sampson when he returned to college ball, even with all his baggage?

Definitely, Sampson had baggage, but it was mostly impermissible phone calls. He admitted what he did and served the time of his show cause order. My issue with Pitino isn't with  what he did, but that he never accepted responsibility for his actions, that shows a definite lack of integrity. The way he threw Andre McGee, his Director of Operations under the bus was a "Bitch move". there is no way in hell that young man financed prostitutes and strippers for recruits and others on his own. To do this to a young man that you recruited to play for you is despicable, so that is why I was and always will be against Pitino coaching at St Johns.

I hope that you and others can respect my point of view.

Nova defending so well, moving ball and controlling the game so far. Cats leading at half 39 - 28

Been in the car listening while driving (I reached my next destination so I am not typing this while driving). Fran calling the game with someone else and they are doing a great job.

That's reasonable. I didnt even remember what Sampsons infractions were and to be fair I'm on record saying if the Son of Sam could win us a national championship I wouldn't rule him out/ I say that half jokingly. Maybe...... :)

Whether you believe it or not, I always respect your point of view. As for Pitino, I have never advocated him, but I also would not have an issue with hiring him. And as for taking responsibility, I don't think  that Pitino, Sampson, Miller or any other coach owe the public an apology. That's between them and their employer, family and anyone who they've done wrong by. I don't know what Pitino said to the folks at Iona, or what Miller said to the folks at Xavier, but whatever it was both schools saw fit to give them another chance. That's good enough for me and, I believe,
for most college basketball fans of most schools. FWIW, I don't believe SJU would ever touch Miller and doubt they would have touched Sampson when he first returned fo college basketball.

Houston Cougars btw are the team that I first rooted for that got me into college basketball. Phi Slamma Jamma

Love them or not, you gotta respect Villanova and Coach Jay Wright for how fundamentally sound they are and for their physical and mental toughness.

Loved those Phi Slama Jama teams. They were fun to watch and their coach Guy Lewis was such a colorful character. Of course more importantly, he was one of the first coaches in the south to recruit black players in the early 1960’s.

As an aside, the one time I rooted for an Olajuwon-led team to beat a Ewing-led team was the NCAA finals in 1984, and the other way around in the NBA finals in 1994. Needless to say the teams I wanted to win, did not.

Ref just gave Samuels a flop warning to which Reggie Miller responded: all I can say is if they had that rule, I never would have been able to play college or pro ball. Gotta love that one lol!

Put me on the side of I do not love Villanova. I would use another word, but your options were only love them or not.

I've probably seen 20 kids in the tourney this year who are from NY and a bunch who were recruited by SJU. Need to get some of these kids at some point.

Last edited:
Daniels & Slater both with 4 fouls for Nova and Dixon with 3. In survival move for the last 3 minutes.

Great play by Gillespie drawing the defense to him and hitting Dixon for wide open three. That may have done it.

It drives me freaking nuts when defenders fall back and let the other team roll the ball up to half court for the clock. Put 1 freaking guy up even to fake him out to pick up the ball
