Anyone know why Curbelo did not play today?  Was he hurt?

Curbelo has been pretty close to a disaster this year. Shooting 34% from the field, 19% from three and had close to as many turnovers as assists.   He may have been a higher rated recruit than Posh, but we got the better player for sure.

Like him or hate him, Kelvin Sampson can recruit and coach. Houston closing out a win over Illini.

“Kelvin Sampson just keeps Houston Cougars rolling - he's one of best in nation.
They lost 4 of 7 guys in rotation from last year's Final 4 team. Then he lost 2 of 3 guys that came back to injury - Sasser & Mack. And Sasser is a star. Sampson brought in 3 key guys from portal”

Kelvin Sampson is one of the best in the business, what he has done with a dead in the water Houston program is outstanding. Much respect for him and his teams.

Ohio State can beat Nova especially if they get them into foul trouble. That said, Nova is so good at not fouling. It will be interesting to see how the game is officiated. This should be a close one in any event.

I don't think I have seen a team play harder than Houston did today. They conceded nothing to Cockburn,  despite his size and weight advantage. Their defense was smart and ferocious.

Would you have been ok with SJU hiring Sampson when he returned to college ball, even with all his baggage?

Definitely agree that this one is a tossup, but I'll be rooting hard for Nova. Would would like to see Big East get 2 to Sweet Sixteen and 1 to Elite 8 - that would be a good showing imho.

Sampson is a great coach, but let’s not pretend he is some angel. He is in the same boat as Bruce Pearl.

Both received show cause punishments, but I would take either here immediately (and that also includes Pitino).

This is why I do not take fans seriously who claim they will no longer be fans if a certain coach is hired.

In the end winning will heal those wounds.

+1,000,000....

Curbello will probably head somewhere else and benefit from a fresh start. Poor season for sure but the talent is there and wouldn’t like to see him end up at the Hall or similar.

I know the kid was highly ranked and highly recruited, but I see a lot of flaws in his game. Some can be fixed, some cannot. He may be better served moving down to a lower level.

Not suggesting us, but needs less of a rigid system I think. Certainly has flaws.

I wasn't suggesting that you were suggesting us. I meant a lower level then Illinois.

Slater & Moore both with 2 fouls already for Nova; potential 2nd half foul trouble which they can't afford.

If Nova had a legit inside presence, they would be very very tough. Lack of such a presence is the keeping Ohio State in the game.

Nova defending so well, moving ball and controlling the game so far. Cats leading at half 39 - 28

Curbelo had a serious concussion which kept him out for quite a few games.  There was also another injury that might still be lingering.  That being said nonetheless, his return to the court has definitely not been good and showed regression in all phases of his game when compared to last year.
