NCAA - Game 1 - San Diego St. (Friday)

They play great D but they def did not play uptempo the two times I saw them. But then again I really wouldn't classify us as up tempo either.

I have gone pretty easy on Lavin all year but how does he not know how they play? I think I watched them twice this year and I could give a better description of how they play than he did. Hopefully someone on the staff has a better scouting report than Steve.
I've seen them several times and Lavin is actually correct. They play like SJU. They try to push the ball early in the shot clock, and try to create offense off of turnovers. When they don't get a an easy look, they settle into a half court offense which is somewhat plodding and since they are not the best shooting team, they are not high scoring. They are aggressive on defense and they often make the games ugly to win them. Sound familiar? If we can get our offense going the way in was in our run prior to the Villanova game we could do well against them even with their superior size. FWIW, even though Polee is the 6'7" in their tall lineup described above, he basically floats around the perimeter looking for a a pass and a spot up three. He isn't a force inside on offense.

I also watched them play twice though got bored in both and was switching around. I think REB is making the more accurate description. These guys are closer to St Johns than say Butler. They are long and athletic and sometimes look great and others just disappear. If I'm not mistaken they were ranked to start the season.

I think this is best matchup for us considering the other 8 seeds. We've got better guards and guards that are accustomed to guarding bigs. Actually it would be one of my top choices for opponents in this entire field especially after losing Obekpa.

Listening to the Belmont coach yesterday when he was asked about Virginia, his reply was good. He said he has only watched them as a fan but he needs to now watch film, as an opponent. I think that is how you can look at Lavin's unprepared comments. You could also turn it around and say that is how he wants it to be.

I just hope he notices they are Big. I would not go the small route. Nothing more frustrating than getting killed on boards. JDR stinks, but at least he takes up space and makes it somewhat easier for Pointer to grab some rebounds. The reason we were able to play small so effectively is becuase CO enabled us to do that. 5 gusrds worked well in a couple of stretches, but in NCAA with tighter whistles you can't just get bulldozed underneath.

It's all part of his game. Why tip his hand on what he knows? Let your opponent think you are clueless. There is no benefit for Lavin to give his scouting report to a reporter.

I'd bet good money that Coach knows more about this team than any of us. I really get a kick out of the perception that some have of him here.

BTW
Love the late start Friday, no matter what happens it will seem like we had a longer stay in Tourney

Yep I was thinking the same

THIS. I can enjoy the entire first round no matter what happens late Friday night. If we played the first game and got blown out I'd be too pissed to pay attention to the other games.

Fwiw I went on the San Diego state board and their fans want to press us and keep the game fast so we tire out in the second half. So maybe Lavin was right.

I don't think that will work out for SD.

Adam, you think exactly like I do! I love watching the tournament when my team is in it, but I get so depressed when they lose I can't even watch. If somehow they beat SDSU, I'll be able to enjoy the games on Saturday as well.

Bilas picked us to win this game fwiw...

9 St. John's over 8 San Diego State: The Aztecs are a great defensive team but cannot score. St. John's has offensive talent and should be able to muster enough points to get past San Diego State, but this is a tough call. Flip a coin, if you'd like -- I am taking St. John's to advance.

1 Duke over 9 St. John's: The Red Storm is very athletic and should be able to hang with Duke, but Jahlil Okafor will be too much to handle without St. John's big man Chris Obekpa in the lineup.

I'm interested to see what kind of game D'angelo plays on Friday night.
He's due for a big performance, I just hope he doesn't press too much.

yes. That is the biggest thing I'll be keeping an eye on as well. We need DLo

I'm really sick of Bilas' Bile duek Bias.

North Florida Ospreys over Duke. (NF has to get by Robert Morris and if they don't Robert Morris over Duke)

He would have helped last year's team, but I think he would have left after that, anyway. Had too great a summer in the Reds system to keep pulling double duty, IMO.
