NCAA - Game 1 - San Diego St. (Friday)

Well said! Additionally, crappy team or not next year, I don't want him here. He has been a pain in the rear for too long. Time to move on.

unfortunately, I agree.

Vaccaro's article: " Passive - aggressively referencing for the hundredth time the fact this class started with Moe Harkless, JaKarr Sampson and Amir Garrett."
Also at an interview with SNY, Lavin mentioned that four years ago this team was the youngest team in the nation. Gee, had we heard that before?

SD State and Polee never shoot like this; damn!!!!!! why did they do it against us.

If Aztecs shoot the way they normally do, at least, we have a close contest and who knows what happens.

Thanks to the terrific seniors, they did a great job!!

So true, but they won the game in the second half by scoring easy baskets in the paint and playing strong transition defense. How many times were our players stopped on fast breaks in the second half with no points? At least 10 points worth during the critical stretch when the 14 point lead was cut to 7. This was SDSU doing what they do well. I give them credit for the win and hope they keep it up for one more game

Besides Fisher adjusting against our fastbreak we were exhausted in the second half. I'll never forget how we tried to comeback, hustling rebounds out of the Aztecks hands.
Thought a very important turn around was stopped by a poor behind the back pass by Branch. That certainly was not the time. I believe a basket there would have brought us below six points.

Post game

Looks like they all had a good cry post-game and Lavin didn't stop during the press conference. Heart-breaking.

Lavin clearly crying at 04:52

Think he's spent and done. Then again, what do I know.
regardless of how nasty some people have gotten on him on just a personal level I think he is a real good guy and feel bad for him

He seems like a very quality human being and truly cares about the well being of these kids. That being said, he comes off extremely delusional, almost like his head is in a bubble at times. It seems that he has nobody to keep him grounded and fill him in on how things really are.

Now that I have had a sleepless night to think about it, I am more pissed than ever
SDSU did not impress me at all
I am firmly convinced that we would have won if Obekpa had played his usual game

I wish the ball was in Dom's hands on all those second half breaks. They could not stop him in the first half. They stopped every break in the second half when a few times the lead would have been cut to 5 with a load of time left and SDSU in a scoring drought. The behind the back pass typified the blown opportunities.

Even with the 3s not falling and their 3s giving them a comfortable cushion the all out effort from our team made this a game. SDSU did a good job matching the johnnies effort.

I wish so too but the fall limited his mobility and it really showed. Announcers noticed it also.

Maybe he'll be the next Johnnie to have a summertime John Lucas intervention

Obekpa already got some Lucas treatment. He obviously did some good things last summer.

Other than Mkras video I haven't even gone through the thread because it will be like rubbing salt on an open wound.

The one thing that did annoy me was after the first half we came out for shoot around for what seemed like 10 minutes before sd state.

So while we are chucking up practice shots st state was working on strategy I assume.

Other than that I did think those 2 fouls on jordan hurt us big time to start the game.

Also that 4th foul on DLO from where we were sitting looked non existent

Ughhhhhhh this was tough but if I was a Nova fan I'd be sicker

You can tell Lavin sincerely cares for these kids. I've never seen him this emotional. Like him or not, it's a little heartbreaking.

I think it was a big mistake benching Jordan for the entire half. He should have come back in at around the 8:00 mark and if he got a 3rd foul, then yank him. He was out for way too long.

I will never understand why we always seem to play a 30% shooting 3-PT team and they shoot 50% for the game against us. SDU averaged 5 threes a game for the entire season (34 games). Last night they hit 9! Minus those extra 12 points from the score last night and suddenly things are different.

DLo didn't dissapoint last night. Call him the Warrior. He will be missed. Sir Dom, too. This team is going to be tough to watch next year minus the seniors, Obekpa and more than likely Jordan.

I still enjoyed this season despite being frustrated last night. When Jordan was whistled for that first foul in the first 20+ secs of play, I thought that was a bad sign for sure.

On to the baseball season I go. Things are going to be interesting for this program in the off season. My gut tells me Lavin is gone. Then again, my gut told me we were playing another game tomorrow vs. Duke.

He didn't bench Jordan the entire half. He let him stay on the court a few minutes which I thought was wise because like Harrison a few weeks ago, if you are iced for 18 -19 minutes of a half, it's hard to come in and contribute.

Lavin pointing to Jordan's foul trouble is silly. With 5 guys, at least 1 guy, and maybe 3-4 are going to pick up 2 fouls in the first half. Lavin has been trying to nurse fouls in the first half and that's why we saw CJ, Amar, and JDR. But those are all just excuses. We had a short bench, and the 4 seniors who got playing time deserved an ensemble cast that could back them up.

I've kept fairly non-committal on LAvin up to this point. The university will not let him go unless there is a buyout or if he is open to negotiating a buyout with one year left. However, the timing is good for a buyout. They will not extend him based on performance or next year's roster at this point, and the timing is good for someone to start anew - again. His pregame Q&A at the reception sounded like a bunch of excuses - if we had Harkless, Sampson, Amir on this team, blah blah blah.

The thing about Lavin after 5 seasons is that I do not believe he knows any alumni, any students, etc. A guy like that should be working a room, coming into a R&W event and greeting some people he knows by name. He should walk the campus, know bunches of students. I don't think Looie even did that, but times have changed. A $2 million plus guy has to be the face of the university in a marquee sport and integrate himself into university life as much as possible. He should be speaking to students about what it means to be a St. John's student, to let them know they are part of something much bigger than themselves. In that he's failed miserably and that's one effort that I don't think he's made.

Now the jury is not out on Bobby G. He is almost painfully shy and devoid of any public charism. I would have liked to hear him say a few words at the R-W, but he also did not work the room , did not speak, and only approached the few prominent alumni he knows. I ran into him coming out of the men's room after the game. There was a long corridor to exit and I spoke to him and said something trite, like "Next year will be better." He ignored me, so I said it again, but this time put a hand on his shoulder. By then we had exited, but the guy didn't pause, didn't respond, and didn't even bother to look at me. After 50 years of priests that didn't engage students and alumni and were distant, I'm not sure I'm ready for a reticent guy who couldn't seem to be bothered. Of course if my hand extended a million dollar check, i'm sure he'd be warmer. Callous to say, and anecdotal, so I'll give him a pass until next time. But if he's going to turn this place around, he'd better crawl out of his shy shell and be engaging to everyone.

Sounds like you're more concerned with rubbing shoulders with the coach than what he can produce on the floor.

Who cares about the R&W club?

Fans, students and alumni care about wins and losses.

You care about him meeting and greeting donors.

Fans, students and alumni care about him fostering relationships with high school and AAU coaches.

The head coach of a basketball program owes you nothing. He signs up to deliver results for the program.

Here's where someone like you is way off base, and whatever comes into your head comes out of your mouth.

I could care less about rubbing shoulders with a coach, or a university President for that matter.

But that should care about about shoulders with you, and me.

You say such dumb things about why you don't contribute, but you wouldn't answer if you ever had contributed, and why you would punish students.

Giving is based on relationships - relationship to a cause, relationship to a person. you want to feel valued when giving, way beyond your contribution.

You and others speak about how "rich alumni" should invest in a new coach, but unless a coach connects to the university, and unless winning translates into better students and more donations, it matters little.

You think its about you and winning? Welcome to the real world - it's not. College athletics is predicated upon what winning provides - sports revenue, profits, increased applications resulting in full enrollment and better students, and yes, increased donations.

A head coach at a university is a very contained win producer. He is the face of the university. II could quiz you on names of head coaches of solid programs, and you'd roll their names off. Then I'd ask you who the university presidents are at those schools, and you'd draw a blank. That coach thus has to have an affinity for the university, be able to know and represent their mission, to act and speak in a manner consistent with university values.

If those things happened with a guy like LAvin, maybe you woudl even have donated to the school or gasp, R-W (again or first the first time)

I noticed that too, we came out at least 5 or 10 mins before SD St did. I thought our section was great, the team played hard, we were just under-manned. They fought to the end and we are gonna miss D'lo , Phil , and Dom. It's not easy winning a Ncaa tourney game glad they got to at least taste it

Chris spent a few weeks in California during the summer I believe not Texas. His name has disappeared from the draft lists. Sadly he is killing his career but I am a firm believer in redemption.
I always ask myself what would Christ do in a situation. What do you think he would say about Chris Obekpa?

I don't think it was the fall. They adjusted. They got back on D and they put Malik Pope on him. Pope is bigger, longer, just as athletic, and more skilled.

One of the big highlights for me, even in a loss occurred late in the game. I wonder if any of you picked up on it on TV.

After a play on the SJU basket side of the court, D'Angelo ended up on the sideline near our seats. He usually pauses in games to pump himself up, often talking to himself or pumping his arms. This time, as he came to the sidelines, our entire section rose to screamed at him to energize him. He paused and stayed there for what seemed to be an eternity as the crowd of SJU fans around the arena joined us very loudly. It was like Harrison was soaking it all up, like at a filling station.

More than the "Thank you Dlo" chant, after he left the court for the final time, I won't forget that moment. It was as if the fans were doing all they could to give something to Harrison, who gave us everything he had for 4 years.

Finally, I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but Harrison, the guys who couldn't be dragged out of the lineup or off the court despite an assortment of injuries, or being battered, gave himself up with his 5th foul late in the game. He knew it was 5, and the end of his career, but he did it becaue in that situation, giving a foul was the prescription for stopping the clock and giving us a chance to win. So, in a final way, the ONLY thing that could get him off the court was a fifth foul that gave us the most miniscule chance of winning. Great, great kid. There will be better players to come along for us, but none with a bigger heart.

The camera caught that but just for a moment. You could see that DLo was facing the crowd and the crowd was going crazy but it didn't last on screen long.

On a somewhat related note, it was just reported on CBS that several of the Aztecs, and their coaches, are complaining of flu-like symptoms. Darn it! Two days too late. ;)
