Mullin

I'm a big Mullin fan and supporter, but reality is in front of all of us if we open our eyes and maybe take a whiff now and then.
Feedback by posters in the know (Paultz and Happy?) have said that replacing Slice is CMs decision to make.
So, why hasn't it been done when it's obvious to everybody the inadequate 'depth' of our staff and that of our roster.
Recruiting seems to be an ad hoc and band-aid approach.
And that is a recipe for continuing program misery.

Juxtapose to Mullin's recruiting efforts just read that during the University of Alabama's trip to the White House yesterday to be honored for winning the National Championship head coach Nick Saban was calling potential recruits.

Seems like we're in another slow motion disaster.[/quote]

Slice fiasco a warning sign. Most of the buzz of late is negative. It's going to get worse until the news surrounding this program starts to trend in a positive direction. By year 4, the kinks should be out of the process. Instead, the news is getting worse. The program really needs something positive to happen soon.

I have Mullin's cell bill right in front of me and I know for a fact he doesn't do that. I'll send it to you :)

Seems like a lot of fans are waking up to the harsh reality. Trust me, I was like a little girl getting a puppy when I saw Mullin was coming. I was picturing a 30 for 30 already in the works talking about how Mullin, an NBA and NY legend took SJ back into the national spotlight consistently making the top 25 and tournaments again. Deep down I always knew it was a longshot working out given the program's luck and the zero coaching experience...but I held out hope and tried to be patient. Well, after 3 full years and heading into the 4th of the Mullin era, it's been a disaster overall. We just can't catch a break. We light a match and the wind blows it out before we can get a real fire started. We get a bit of traction then we derail. After all the departures and now seeing Paultz's avatar implying another departure, even the most rosy fans now have to admit that there's a major problem and it's NOT just a "part of hoops today". It's way more than that. It's an incompetent staff. We tried and it failed. We knew this was very possible when we hired him. We took a bet and lost...let's move on and try formulas that actually have much better odds of working out. Hire Mike Rice and try to pair him with Will Brown. Give them 3 years and I bet they'd be lightyears ahead of where we are now.

I am holding off on any final judgement. If the staff pulls through and adds two players that can make us competitive enough to have a shot at dancing, I will remain supportive.

That said, this is our second year of searching for a grad transfer big. I know recruiting is a tough game and I know you can work hard and get burned by a teenager. But, as previously mentioned, programs like Depaul are finding BE caliber bigs. If we're not getting talent because of a deficit in effort, I can no longer be supportive.

I will hold off short-term judgment on recruiting until we see if we get the grad transfer. The much bigger concern to me is continuity and ability of staff to retain/develop players. If in fact Trimble also leaves, that is 3 in one year which is way too much; something is rotten in Denmark. Hopefully that is not the case.

I’m with you on that JohnnyFan. It’s very odd we seemed to have K’d on Femi when the local competition is said to be Iona and Hofstra.
What other bigs are on ‘Matt’s Radar? Doubt Trey Porter is even a ‘reach’ for us. I thought Femi our best shot. Unbelievable to me that Mullin ‘was not’ on campus for the visit. If he was, then shut me up.
Otherwise, hasn’t he read the Board and the papers how desperate we are for a Grad Big so we can make the dance next year?
Keita is not a 40-minute guy, so maybe he plans to showcase 4 guards and an outside shooting wing (Clark) in a frenzied shoot-out scenario game in-and-out?
That’ll work.

Maybe, puncher's chance with Porter.

Good point. They are definitely not out there ahead of it all, and that's where you need to be to succeed.

That's all well and good and to be expected because Saban is a disturbed man who needs to get a life besides football, or maybe not. ;)

Chris Mullin doesn't take criticism well. He has become a coaching enigma. Doesn't like to take advice or answer questions. Where Lavin would give you a response with a philosophical view Mullin will give those asking questions a snarky response and dirty look. Stubborn to a fault. Even the Maven now seems frustrated by his idol. Recently said "you can drag a horse to water but..."
Hoping he returns to reality soon from his California dreaming.

It seems pretty clear from everything I've heard and read that Mullin is not front and center recruiting. The whole point bringing him here was to wow the recruits and have an NBA HOFer in their living room showing them pictures with MJ and his gold medal. Instead he's relying on Matt (seems to be at least a solid recruiter but is only 1 man) and Greg who is younger than me and I graduated SJ with my Master's in 2014. Again, I think Matt and Greg are working hard but it doesn't seem like Mullin is holding up his end of the bargain. Doesn't he notice what his buddy Ewing is doing?

Whatever is going on, we need answers. Something is obviously not right and I'm not sure if it's recruits steering clear with negative recruiting, Mullin not being front and center recruiting, Mullin not hiring a real assistant, or the coaches just being incompetent. Maybe it's a mix of all the above.

Wow. Just wow. If 1/2 the stuff on this post is true; we are totally up the creek with no paddle.

Ewing seems to be embracing the job more than Mullin. Maybe all those years as an assistant, putting in the hours and all the rejections for head coaching jobs have paid off for patrick.

Next year is year 4 and we are looking at 6-7 big east wins and most likely, no post season again.

“We were...”

Totally agree Mike. I thought Mullin would 'learn' coaching ABCs OJT, but be out there front and center in top recruits' living rooms--with Mitch--both showcasing their NBA HOF creds. What an idiot I am for falling for that.
We don't get a card to 1 NCAA dance without 1 more serviceable Big. I'd rather whiff on the sit-outs at this point--important as they are given Shamorie definitely leaving after next season and maybe Simon also--but a Grad Big is essential to any realistic hopes for an NCAA dance next year.
Otherwise, it falls totally on Keita, with 'some' (but very unpredictable) contribution from Roberts...and that, again, leaves us with zero 'depth' and likely disappointment.
