Aaannnddddd just like that, a disappointing Chris interview turns into a "Next Coach?" thread.

Just wanted to add (as someone who roots against the AAC), the Shockers might have a few bad seasons. They are losing basically everyone from their FF caliber team from last year (who underperformed and were a first round exit), and their incoming class is ranked only #62 nationally. 7 three stars and nobody else.

Typically I would see Marshall as a lock for WSU, but unless he can work some serious magic with mediocre talent again I could see him looking to leave. His main rival McDermott has massively out recruited him the last several years.
Marshall may (or may not) look to leave, but if there's a vacancy here, then it'll take a whole lot of dough to land him at St. John's. That's all I was saying.

Personally, I just don't see him as a serious option if that scenario was to play out.
Marshall has turned down far better jobs than STJ for far more money than STJ can offer over the past 10 years. The general feeling is he might leave for one of the bluest of bluebloods for oodles of $$$ but he's very happy where he is. He turned down lots from NC State, $4 million from Bama and other offers and now makes about $3.3-3.5 million at Wichita.

He makes at least $3.5 million there. It would take serious dough to land him, and even then, he's not leaving for just anyone -- I'm sure he's thinking Duke, UNC. Given Duke connection, my first guess would have been Cragg trying to lure Hurley back east if a new change were to happen, but his contract language makes it tough to get out early.

I have a couple guys in mind who would work, but there's obviously going to be some "We're about to have our best season in years, so why are we talking about a new coach?" posts soon. So it'll hold until we see what happens.

But I'm definitely now in the camp that tension may sadly already exist between a new AD and a coach who seemingly doesn't like answering to people. It's happened other places before.
I was already told Mullin didn't particularly care to answer to anyone. I'm guessing something recently occured between Cragg and Mullin. You can buzz me via PM, LJSA, if you don't want to be tarred and feathered.
Here's my thing then. Why was a situation ever allowed to exist where Mullin didn't have to answer to anyone like his first three years? A poor decision by someone. If Mullin was told he'd have to answer to the hire ups from day one, who knows if he even takes the job. Hopefully Cragg can drag this school out of the Stone age sometime soon.
As Cragg came in, the mom and pop mantra and the incompetent period was ended. Now we can operate like a real major program.
Hold that thought...
Well, at this point Cragg has a 100% approval rating from fans/media/etc while Mullin (the coach) is... somewhere below that. So Mullin's belief that he doesn't need to answer to him exists exclusively in his own mind. Very dangerous mentality to have.
We all agree that Mullin needs a winning year and a post season appearance to gain some coaching respect which may improve his late recruiting chances but so far it is starting to look like Lavin's final season where he lost every major targets who chose rival schools like Delgado, Jessie Govan, Cheick Diallo, Isaiah Whitehead, Khadeen Carrington. The closest Lavin came to a local talent was Adonis De La Rosa.
Instead Lavin got out of NY area players like Samir Doughty, Amar Alibegovic, and Brandon Sampson.  A post season was not enough to save his job after lackluster recruiting.
His job may depend on his efforts to land Kofi and Precious.

If that's his mentality, then I don't care how good of a season they have this year, I hope chris steps down.
Hope he changes that attitude.
I have a feeling that he leaves regardless whether this year is a success or not.He seems much more interested in the NBA world than his coaching job. If he was serious about coaching, he would have hired a X & O coach this off season. I think he and Mitch ride off in the sunset.

I feel confident that Cragg will find someone to lead this program forward in a sustainable way. First time in a long time we can feel confident that someone really has their hands on the wheel.
I agree. I think Mullin leaves regardless of what happens this season.

Wow, it would surprise me if CM leaves following a very successful season.
Then, I’d worry about retaining recruits, maybe even some key
players.

I wouldn't worry about retaining recruits. We don't have any for 2019. As for possible transfers or departures, I would include all three current freshmen, Shamorie, Heron, Simon along with Clark. That nightmare scenario would exceed Lavin's empty cupboard and immediately sink us to the bottom of the league again.
God forbid that scenario! That said, I hope Mullin turned the corner and signs some recruits, makes an effort to settle in the NY area where he has family and figures out his staffing needs other than Matt.

Not necessarily. Mullin leaving is different from wholesale firing. If I were the next guy, I'd think long and hard about retaining Matt. The effort he gives in comparison to the rest of the staff already makes him seem like a guy who wants to make himself as bulletproof as possible.

You'd have to think that with a good year: top 10 in the ap, deep run in the b.e. tournament, sweet 16, that we'd get a top 50 recruit and another top 100 at the least in April

Wow 2. Can't wait to see what happens after the first loss.

Just listening to Mullin it doesn't sound like he is willing to take any other opinions into consideration for better or worse depending on the outcome this year. Again he finally has the talent and bench, so we will see. But at the media day he was interviewed and said something like, "I know the game...it's a simple game we just have to execute" when asked about specific things he worked to improve with the team. When asked what style or "system" he has, he usually dismisses the need for one. He seems to be big on freestyle aka streetball aka not too far off what Lavin had. Yes Lavin had the stupid weave just passing the ball back and forth without moving while defenders stood there confused. But he allowed that similar streetball style. Our past two coaches basically rely on the talent to just overcome the opponent as opposed to guys like Cooley, Wright, McDermott, and Jordan who focus on skills, set plays, and specific plans/styles. I fear this is why we see results like vs. URI (which I know does not count but that does not mean it's not an early indication) and other confusing losses against much weaker teams. When you get good coaching, you see the chemistry and you see the players have a clear plan they're willing to execute to reflect the strengths. We haven't seen that yet but hopefully this season we do.

I agree I think Chris Mullin should listen to your opinion.
It always amazes me why professional coaches, managers and GM's don't listen to fans in order to do their jobs. Like sometimes I will listen to WFAN and Bob from Scarsdale will call in and say the Mets should trade Juan Lagares, Wilmer Flores and Matz for Mike Trout. After the call I always say to myself man I wish that Bob was the Mets GM
Same on here. After reading Mike Zaun wistfully declare we should run Ed Cooley's sets and hire a High School coach to be our bench coach I often say to myself, "Self, I wish Mike Zaun the accountant, fireman, zoo keeper or whatever he is was ST John's coach and not Chris Mullin."

Except your examples are ridiculous and critiques of Mullin are legitimate. Like it or not, we really are at the point where fans would make better decisions in some cases than Mullin. The obvious one being to hire another assistant. The reason it's so shocking he didn't hire one is because most would.

Bob in Scarsdale did not think he was being ridiculous.
I am serious though. When Mullin leaves I want you to be the next coach. It would bring me endless joy to have you come on here and complain about yourself as coach.

This team has talent. I’m not going to worry about Mullins body language when Cragg’s name comes up. The results will prove out. That’s not an endorsement or an indictment that will come from me in March.

Nobody on this site has any idea what the relationship is between Cragg and Mullin. Just idiotic speculation by people who need childish recognition.

Mike, I enjoy your wild posts but we are NOT at the point where any of us arm chair coaches and critics could make any better decisions than Mullin. The "other assistant issue" is dead for now. Anything could happen this season. I don't think Mullin is too old to grow as a coach and depending on the recruiting and retention results in 2019 he can have a very long career at St. John's or it could come to a premature end. It is all up to him. Like fans of every sport and team we will heap praise when due and be overly critical when we, as a team, fall short.
Let's try to keep it real. We are fans, not coaches.
