Not to put a damper on your fine missive but a week ago in a back and forth with Fordham96 I said:

"WHY would I need a poll to question Chris Mullin's professional opinion that Shamorie Ponds, his player, is not going to be a first round NBA Draft pick??
Chris could have easily asked Golden State to give him a look. He did not. Mullin is not on board with Ponds leaving if he is not drafted. It has nothing to do with having to provide for his family.
As for you, when you say " I know I am not the one who wants to be able to provide for my family", you should be ashamed of yourself!;)
Other than being left off the combine lists and the fact that those who have watched his game closely don't think he is draft ready this year, his freedom to do as he pleases is the only thing you got right
."

If giving your star player sound advice should be credited to Mullin then good for Mully, but Mullin has been in the Bay area with his family through all this drama. His advice to Slick was given before he left. All the real credit goes to Shawn Ponds for navigating through all of this with his son.
Do you have a picture of Mullins mailbox? Any pictures of him having coffee with his wife?

Just my two cents about Mullin. I was too young to know about the mid 80s SJU teams. So unlike other fans that have a spot close to their hearts when it comes to Mullin the player, I can't say that I'm one of them. However I try to be a realist. I realized when they hired Mullin that there would be growing pains. This being his first endeavor into coaching. I knew the first year was a throw away year. That team was a patchwork job. So his first full season I think he did a decent job. This last season I think we could all agree that with Lovett sticking around, we easily would've won a few more games and had an NIT invite. Now going into what I consider year 3 (throwing away that first year), we look to be an NCAA caliber team. With Heron eligible to play, I see us at least a sweet 16 team. I really don't know what more people were expecting. I get the frustration with Chris allegedly being absent on the recruiting trail, however at the end of the day isn't a coach judged on his won/loss record? Honestly, maybe they play the transfer game because it's hard to get commitments from high school kids when the program has been dormant so long. Perhaps this blue print will lead to winning, which could lead to St. John's being a viable destination for high level high school recruits. Maybe we'll see more effort from Chris when we're at that level. Point is, give this staff the time they deserve. We're trending upward and that's really all any of us could ask for. Next year looks like it could be one hell of a fun season. However with all that being said, I'd trade out Mitch for Rice in a new York minute.
‘72, gotta tell ya, they had to pick me up off the floor!!! LMAO!
But guessing about it, I think CM—his $2mm/year deal notwithstanding—was in a tight box with his star player, knew the kid ate, drank and slept NBA dreams.
So, guessing again, he blessed Shamorie exploring his options with tryouts, et cetera, and maybe said ‘go for it’.
At the end of the day, guessing again—when Shamorie's ‘scores’ came up a bit short, Chris may have advised him “Don’t risk going undrafted, you don’t want and need that.”
Dunno.
Total guess.
Obviously, Sharmorie’s decision—urged by his family—was the correct decision.
Shamorie clearly has to work on his shot selection and his defense.
And, if Heron transfers here and is eligible—I’m guessing again—he and Figgy and Dixon will unleash a Ponds we haven’t seen.
Shamorie (and the whole team) may have a magical year.
Let’s go Johnnies.

Yeah, because there is no way that Mullin could communicate with anyone from all the way in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, the Pony Express stopped running years ago. l agree all the credit goes to the Ponds’, it was their, and only their, decision to make but you have no idea what, if any, input Mullin had to help them, even from all the way in the Bay Area.

Perhaps when you "glean over" my ramblings you skip the important substance. Mrs, 72 doesn't blame you.;)
Again, I said "Mullin is not on board with Ponds leaving if he is not drafted. It has nothing to do with having to provide for his family."
I knew this from someone much closer to the situation than you or Al Bovino in Florida. Mully gave his blessings to Slick to pursue the tryouts because he had only to gain from the free evaluations. However, if you don't think Mullin didn't know exactly what the outcome of those evaluations would be 4 weeks ago then you are the one not giving Mully much respect on this situation.
My point was the decision was made by the Ponds family and them alone. Kudos to them but Mullin didn't lose much sleep out in California over it as he pretty much knew what the evaluations would be since he has done this stuff before.:)

The absentee Mullin thing really bugs people, I get why it would and don't get when he's blindly defended over it. But if you are a poster who hates hearing it, I suspect all you have to do is pull for Heron to be eligible, because the season we'd have would make everyone giddy.

That said, if we suddenly lost Heron and word leaks that he was mad that Mullin wasn't around for visit, then anyone who would still defend the disappearing act should probably ban themselves.

It gets old with TIS ALWAYS attacking our coach whether the news is good or bad... I'm all for constructive criticism and stuff, but this is ridiculous. This is the best time to be a SJU fan for a long ass time... Even when Heron speaks of one of the reasons he wanted to come here was his relationship with Chris and how he feels that he can get him to the next level, we still have to read Toms bullshit.. Childish ass behavior for an adult.

Who said he wasn’t in Cali? You can bitch and complain from afar, just like Mullin can communicate from all the way in California. And no, I am a libertarian who KNOWS all the nonsense you are brainwashed with is fake.

Tom happens to be a really good guy who i have conversed with in pms, here. Often if i get embroiled in some nasty interchange, he will shoot me a message thats warm and reassuring. I am pretty sure i know where his and 72s dislike of Chris is coming from, but wouldn't go there publicly. It's disappointing to me, but like 72, Tom is a good guy who i think has just gone over the top here against mullin.

Logen, like you I hate it when we agree too much. 80% of my company works from remote home offices around the world. Some successful companies even have c suite execs that do that.

If mullin wins 20 and we dance, i dont care if he coaches games from cali. Conversely, if we dont win, living in the sju dorms wouldn't make him more effective
