Mullin

The point that seems to be missed by some here is that it ultimately is irrelevant what posters here thought of the hire of any asst. coach. In a well-run operation, the school president hires the athletic director, the AD hires the head coaches and each head coach hires his assistants.
SJU seems to operate differently, and so, accountability is more difficult to assess. I don't know how thorough Mullin was with regard to Rohrssen's hiring, but it has been a long-running embarrassment.

Yes I was going to say something similar. I thought Slice proved at Kentucky how valuable he was. Maybe that was a mirage since he had the Kentucky machine. Maybe Calipari wasn't sad to see him go.
Guys, Slice was at Kentucky for 363 days! Less than 1 year. Cal has reeled in #1 classes for a decade. He didn't need Slice and in that one year KY's class showed no marked improvement over any other year. Slice peaked at Pitt, failed miserably at Manhattan and hasn't held a job for more than a year since then. (what is he? a millennial?)

I posted this many times but folks want to give Slice credit for things at KY that had nothing to do with him.

So you think hiring another guy who failed at Manhattan College with a six year guaranteed contract for close to $600K was a mistake?

“Slice-gate” was in a nutshell contentious, ugly, embarrassing and regretful. Granted SJU paid piper, but it is time to move on. Hopefully Mullin succeeds and Slice disappears from our discussions.

Just a couple if corrections.

To my knowledge chris has never refused to take direction from goff.

I also dont know if he was given the green light to replace slice. The university had a wage freeze, a hiring freeze, and a layoff. Our good friend K. Barry left because he had not gotten a raise in a very long time.

As far as goff or even bobby g. Managing Chris, i do believe theres a lot of idol worship going on

Joe Oliva technically supervises CM as I understand it.

Guessing 'technically' is in bold and italicized, but I know nothing--like the great Sgt. Schultz often said!

The redmen.com Slice legend began before Kentucky. He got so much credit on here when he was at Pitt that I started hearing the angelic choir every time his name was posted.

Id love to see the org chart showing that one. I have spoken to Goff about having Chris be more present to the university community - students, alums etc, and i didnt get the impression that Goff felt chris was subordinate to him. Thats likely the reality with all big name coaches in revenue producing sports

You are way off base and out of bonds. This is exactly what i was referring to in responding to your threatening assertion that folks would be suspended.

Calling out hypocritical users who are now bashing Mullins hire of Slice is based in reality. The overwhelming sentiment on the Slice hire at the time on here was positive and enthusiastic.

Admit it, you didn't like me responding to your post by warning against thethreatening tone of it. You even deleted my first response because you did not like the content, not because it violated a rule.

The board rules say the purpose is to support the school, coaches, and players, but we routinely allow every coach since Carnesecca to be characterized as inept, lazy, stubborn, stupid, you name it. The Carnesecca statue thread bashes the school. Can we not be critical in this manner, or can we?

Calling out hypocritical behavior is a far cry from the often profane, defamatory, and even threatening rhetoric that was permitted for years here. I applauded the mods for regulating that sort of thing.

I don't know who you are, but recent posts do not remotely approach the type of thing we are trying to avoid here. You are likely offended by this response but if you think it compares to the ludicrous taunts to mods for years as he persisted in antisocial behavior, you are dead wrong.
I'm not going to take the time responding to your basically inaccurate comments, except for one. I didn't delete your previous post.

On a general note, if you don't like te moderation here, feel free to post on another site.

One thing I can say about OhioFan and RedmenNorth to their credit is that they send pm's to warn/advise fans when they push the envelope. That is much appreciated rather than behind the scenes stuff.

So, are you intimating Otis is deleting my posts?

Anton Goff and Joe Oliva seem like decent guys, but doubt either provides Chris with any guidance, constructive criticism or evaluation. My guess is our President is the last man standing in that regard. How that works would be interesting to see.

Lastly, it is my impression that administration expected Chris to be consistently involved in fundraising efforts and events, in light of their financial commitment to the program. Hopefully that has occurred.

SJU, from what a number of folks have told me, is facing a number of financial challenges. One example the NYS Excelsior Free College Tuition Program which has adversely effected SJU enrollment. In such trying times, an all hands on deck effort seems prudent. In my opinion, a nationally recognized guy like Chris could really be a key resource meeting this challenge.

It makes sense, but the recognized guy has to be up to the task. I am afraid Chris is no longer running on a full tank.

It's hard to run on a full tank when you are constantly making cross country trips that have zero to do with your job. Same goes for Richmond.
The similarities to the previous coaching staff is eerily familiar. By year two things happened to deflate the staff, players and fan expectations. With Lavin it was the effects of his battle with cancer and the departure of coach Dunlap. With Mullin it was the effect of the departure of Slice and surrounding acrimony and the return of his family to California.
It has been an uphill battle for Chris and hopefully by next year this time we hear better news on his family front and with recruiting. It goes without saying that he must win for the pieces to fall into place and not give the impression of a house divided by personal and professional issues or that house will fall under its own weight.
