Mullin Stepping Down

Being the coach of Iona Cluess finds himself in a very good position. The MAAC is a very weak league and Iona take men's basketball seriously while most of the other members don't. Iona's admission requirements are much more liberal than the other members. Most of them will not admit JUCOS for example and Iona will.
Cluess has managed to hang on to most of his players while the other teams constantly lose players like Dixon who jump at the chance of moving up to a better league. He probably is a decent coach but his hiring would look like a step closer to mid major level to anyone west of the Hudson River.

8 seasons at Iona. Six trips to the NCAA torunament, via 6 conference tournament championships, 199-108 record at Iona, 4 regular season conference titles.

Before that 5 seasons at D2 CW post. 120-33 record

Before that, one season at Suffolk Community College 22-10 and a 4th place finish in the national championship.of NJCAA Div III.

Before that a nationally ranked St. Mary's of Manhasset HS team record: 264-78, including 8 straight CHSAA championships.

Insofar as comments about not being in consideration for Lavin's hire or Mullins, he was at CW Post when Lavin was hired, and Mullin was hired without a search process, supposedly after Lavin was asked to stay with a pay cut.
Thanks for the follow up. Did not know. I go back and forth with a friend that is an Iona graduate, and he loves him. For my own preference, I would prefer a more seasoned D1 coach like Pitino (not necessarily my choice) instead of giving the job to an "up and coming" coach. Lord knows we had our share (Jarvis, Mahoney, Fraschillia, Roberts)

I coached against him when he was at Suffolk. He’s not a magician...he just had better players from his connections at St. Mary’s. CW Post was child’s play with someone coming off his two prior jobs with the players he had access to.

The MAAC is arguably the worst league in college basketball. You can get much better players than your competitors in a way that is just not possible in leagues like the Bug East.
I think he can coach, but I don’t think he will be able to outrecruit his competition likes he’s done his entire career. We should avoid him at all costs. Let him prove it in a better league first.

I may be very wrong, but that does not sound like the kind of resume that our Duke-pedigreed AD is shooting for.
I think there are a half dozen candidates in the discussion. I have no issue with Cluess in the discussion but even though the Cluess family has strong ties to St. John's the relationship with Tim has been cool since his high school coaching days at St. Mary's where we seldom had a foot inside his door. I also have doubts that he will have a national recruiting presence or be attractive to elite prospects. We shall see if the big pocket donors that wanted Mullin out settle for Cluess.

24-48 hours for Hurley to decide. Not going to drag out. Gut says yes. If no it's plan B and all I can tell you is Pitino is not plan B.

Just putting it out there that the ESPN article (which is currently their second biggest headline) mentions Bobby Hurley first and then Tim Cluess second. No mention of anybody else:

If Cragg fired Mullin for Cluess then he should pack his bags. There is no chance our fans don’t eat him alive in for years like last four coaches
Maybe we should all just calm down and let it play out for a day or two. Yesterday you called Cragg a monster, now your second guessing him as our future AD.

I wouldn't say "fired". The alternative was extending Mullin...

I agree Cluess isn't an exciting choice and would be a bit disappointing, but I'd be fine with him. Really hoping we get Hurley and if not then give Pitino a strong look before moving on to Cluess.

If cluess gets the job, then I'm officially done with sju. They won't do anything with him.
What's so bad about Cluess? I don't know much about him other than he'd probably remain loyal to the program/NYC and is a winner. Not sure about his recruiting, but if we hired some good recruiters then we should be set. As long as Cluess shows up to official recruiting visits he'd already be a big step up.

Staff means St. Jean, Luca, and the very involved grad assistant.

Adam, what has he done at Iona, oh get to the ncaa you say? well yeah, it doesn't take much to win the MAAC tournament. Then once they get in it's one and done.
I don't want a pray, I'm sick of prays, and that's what Cluess is. Pray that he's the one.
Why settle on a pray, when we could get Pitino, who'd be a sure thing.

I don't wanna freaking hear it, if it's Cluess then I'm so freaking done.

It’s not Cluess’s record nor anything else that I’d be worried about. He plays a very similar style to Mullin, with constant running and no defense. It’s exciting offensively for sure, but I think fans would like eventually seeingnaome defense, rebounding etc. things we were missing under Mullin. I think Cluess should have gotten a shot instead of Mullin at the time or even before that. Right now, I’d prefer a younger coach who’s hungry to grow a program.

Chris Huey who seems an energetic guy.

As a Marist alum (undergrad) watching MAAC basketball, trust me when I say that it's among the worst in D1. Most of the programs there would consider 1 NCAA berth to be among the most historic feats ever. Even when MAAC teams make the NIT it's huge. Siena used to be good with Kenny Hasbrouck but they aren't very good and Matt Brady was decent with Marist a few years but he's long gone. All they have is Cluess in that league and Iona can beat up on awful programs.
