Mullin Stepping Down
There is no wiggle room for any new coach. The BE needs NYC like the NBA and MLB need NYC only much, much more right now. Another season or two like the last one and the whole house of cards is done.Forget the "celebrity" coaches: they just don't work out in NY. If we can get him, Hurley would be fine. He brings his family presence, contacts, and reputation, a fan base which is still under 40, and, we keep the positive press about the home town boy working his way up the ladder. The main difference is that he is a traditional working stiff who will always give you more than you pay for..
Rick's last year in NY he coached a first place team. ;)

Serious question: if Cluess is such a great catch, what's he still doing at Iona at the age of 60? Mean no disrespect to him personally, but you'd think he would have made the leap to a high-major team by this point in his career.

If we're going to take someone in the twilight of their career, then Pitino is my choice. If we want someone who's going to be here for 20 years, then obviously a Hurley type is needed.
If you know anything about Cluess, it is quite likely he will never leave this area, for family reasons. In one of my favorite all time Cluess comments, he said "I don't care where I coach, St. Mary's, Suffolk CC, Post, Iona, town intramurals, it's all the same to me. I love coaching basketball."
No, I did not know that Cluess will never leave this area for a coaching position. Has he ever been offered a HC job for a high-major team?
I don't think it ever gets that far. He has lived here his entire life and loves the area and has made it pretty clear he never wants to live anywhere else. And the only high major job around is the SJU job.

WOW, Mike F is big time on Cluess. He wants him BIG TIME. Says Hurley uses this as a stepping stone. Cluess stays 10+ years and wants no other job. Interesting, but in the tank for his buddy Kevin.
What's the over/under on the number of Iona games Mike has seen in the last 9 years? And Post before that?

I say 3. I'm not taking his expert analysis too seriously.
6 MAAC championships in 8 seasons, earning NCAA bids, the other two he was regular season champ, very credible showing vs. UNC this year with a sub par team after losing his best player. What else do you need to know?
My dig was at Framcessa not Iona Beast.
I'm asking how many Iona games do you think hes actually watched? And now hes opinining on their offense like hes their beat writer.

Cluess has been successful. Hes not my choice, but I understand those that prefer him. But I dont need to be lectured by the sports pope.

Big Mike is a loudmouth dope. Between Hurley and Cluess is a no brainer. Hurley would have much more interest from prep school kids in th area, especially those in NJ who steal from NY talent. Like Cluess a lot but Hurley is more representative of the future.

Right...someone who knows zilch about college hoops is giving advice. Come on. This is important.
He knows everything about college basketball; just ask him

The last few years there has been a debate around here about whether it was acceptable for SJU to have Providence or Seton Hall type success or if the goal is to emulate what Villanova accomplishes.

Pitino = Going after Villanova
Cluess = Best Case emulating the Hall or Providence
Hurley = Wild Card with upside
Better than we have been over the last 20 years. Sounds like all possibilities would bring a huge upside in wins and NCAA appearances. I am looking forward to the announcement. I think the school finally has the right AD in place and that any decision will be well thought out and move us forward. No more scenarios where we take huge risks for little reward. I think the risk and reward will be closely correlated.
True, and I agree. I don't hate any of the options.
I like Tim Cluess a lot and he might bring Grasso with him.
Luv Hurley.
And Pitino would bring a couple Final Fours until...
All are good choices.

I guess the issue is we want an honest coach who is capable of being successful in the system that the NCAA has allowed to dominate college recruiting.

That’s an impossible wish, I’m afraid.

HIre Jack Molinas to be on staff.

Being there are so few in this area, i'm going to guess no. I think even Providence would be too far for him, but it's also possible that he would have considered a move. I'm just saying what I know he has said.

It would be a novel approach. Hire a guy who has won every single place he has been with absurdly good results, that won't cost a ton, that won't be lazy, whose kids would go through the wall for him, who is a tough disciplinarian, and can evaluate both talent and coach X's and O's. If my math is right, he is 5 years younger than Pitino, wold cost a ton less and could be here in 10 years.
It would be a sad indictment if Cluess was a major contender for the job. He was never even in the conversation over the past 9 years from Lavin to Mullin. So Iona had the right hire all these years? I don't think so. If nickel and dime hires are our alternatives we are going to be forever Fordham, companion to DePaul and going backwards instead of forward.
Cluess won at very low mid major levels and his teams play average defense. I expect a national search this time with real candidates who are not past their prime but are experienced enough to build a program.

I see posts about what has Hurley accomplished? Can anyone fill me in on what Cluess has accomplished?.......Serious question btw.

Personally, I was for either Dan Hurley or Tim Cluess on the hire that became Mullin. So yes, he was the right choice back then.

Guy has won everywhere he's been. And, if we're going to be as bad next year as most of us think, at least we'll be exciting to watch, if Cluess comes aboard.

What you need too know is that * Fran Fraschilla, *Bobby Gonzales, *Mike Dean, *Tim Welsh, and * Paul Hewitt all experienced big time success coaching in the Meto Atlantic conference which lead each to land major conference head coaching jobs but with the passage of time each of the aforementioned coaches failed at their respective higher coaching positions eventually moving to to lower leagues and now each of the failed coaches is no longer coaching in D1 basketball despite the fact that each is still young enough to be a head coach.

Yep, that is what you need to know.

Mr. Cluess' coaching success in the MAAC is absolutely no indication of future success in a higher league.

Agree Sju Grad 13. . It’ll likely be very soon. I doubt Cragg would’ve ended the Mullin HC-era and not have cards ready to play.

8 seasons at Iona. Six trips to the NCAA torunament, via 6 conference tournament championships, 199-108 record at Iona, 4 regular season conference titles.

Before that 5 seasons at D2 CW post. 120-33 record

Before that, one season at Suffolk Community College 22-10 and a 4th place finish in the national championship.of NJCAA Div III.

Before that a nationally ranked St. Mary's of Manhasset HS team record: 264-78, including 8 straight CHSAA championships.

Insofar as comments about not being in consideration for Lavin's hire or Mullins, he was at CW Post when Lavin was hired, and Mullin was hired without a search process, supposedly after Lavin was asked to stay with a pay cut.

Every mid major darling is a crap shoot, and many mid major coaches given a shot at a big time program did not have the success Cluess has had.
https://nypost.com/2019/04/09/toxic-rick-pitino-campaigns-for-st-johns-job-with-a-ny-demand/

Pitino wants an apology from the FBI.They still haven't apologized for denying the existence of the mafia or promoting the existence of Russian conspiracy.

Anyway, Zach Brazziller is his usual impartial self, identifying Pitino as toxic moments after completing an interview with him. Did you call him toxic over the phone, Zach? Why characterize his downside in the headline when you could have easily portrayed his upside?
No he wants an apology from the US Attorney of the Southern District of New York who brought the charges. Good luck with that.

I may be very wrong, but that does not sound like the kind of resume that our Duke-pedigreed AD is shooting for.
