Mullin Stepping Down

the fact the players are even considering transferring is insane. I understand they are in the dark but this is a business that involves millions of dollars. Im sure they will be privy to info once things are clarified but the main thing is they have a chance to be COACHED by a HOF COACH in Pitino Also a choice is an up and coming Bobby Hurley, or an extremely successful and knowledgable coach in Cluess. Why in the world even consider leaving with these three frontrunners??? BTW, recruits will flock to these guys. Great options !

But we now know Pitino has expressed interest in the position...when was the last time we had a 7 time final 4 coach express interest in coaching SJU?
Takes two to tango and it would take some serious convincing for SJU higher ups to consider him...
Tom Bradley is ON IT!

I doubt very much Pitino would be interested. I understand Hurley was at the low end of the salary range, but I’d be surprised to learn that’a state school doesn’t have the money to compete with the likes of StJohn’s. Cleuss was just given a new contract but will St John’s want to pay his buy out?

Pitino has already expressed interest

If Repole said, “Hire Pitino, and here’s the money” would SJU consider it? How much say does the guy paying the bills get? vs. How much the school wants to appear clean. Fascinating!

I say if we can get Pitino pull the trigger! Frankly somebody tell me in this day and age what is the real downside?

Winning!

Serious question: if Cluess is such a great catch, what's he still doing at Iona at the age of 60? Mean no disrespect to him personally, but you'd think he would have made the leap to a high-major team by this point in his career.

If we're going to take someone in the twilight of their career, then Pitino is my choice. If we want someone who's going to be here for 20 years, then obviously a Hurley type is needed.

See Damn Yankees.

You can't base the decision solely off of this, but an easy way to assess the strength of a candidate is how you expect competing programs would react to the hire, particularly in conference.

My guess is there is a little doubt both of the primary names currently being discussed are far more threatening than Mullin had become. I imagine other coaches in the league had gotten fairly comfortable with Mullin, especially after the team's performance this year relative to the talent on the roster. Probably viewed it as SJU could and has done worse, but also not a guy that is likely to be consistently disruptive to the teams looking to compete at the top of the conference.

Hurley would likely be a far more competitive challenge, particularly in this area from a recruiting standpoint. But I have to imagine Pitino would really have programs nervous. Suddenly a mid-tier to bottom feeding program for most of the last 2 decades has a coach as accomplished as any in the conference. Especially as Marquette, Providence, and Seton Hall try to consistently position themselves behind Nova, and Georgetown, Butler, and Xavier deal with newer coaching staffs looking to establish themselves.

I'm not advocating for one vs. the other, just one way to look at it. Either of these hires would be disruptive, and it's fun to be the disruptor, especially when you've largely been down for as long as SJU has been.

There's no chance they hire Pitino. There's a better chance of them hiring Mitch Richmond. They wouldn't hire Mike Rice. What make you think they'll hire Pitino with his baggage?

There's no way Cragg took this route without knowing Hurley was coming. No way. You don't make this play without having a plan. If Hurley gets hired and they bring in Hsu and Borman, you'll know that this was in the works for awhile.

GET IT DONE BOBBY AND MIKE!!!!!

Do you think Val Ackerman would have an issue with Pitino coming to St John’s!
Never in a million years! This would be huge for the BE conference!

The downside? Even putting aside the moral and ethical concerns, which mean nothing nowadays, that's easy. Let's be practical. If anyone thinks that all the reasons, the dirt, behind Pitino's dismissal from Louisville have been made public, see me about a bridge. So into the heart of the tabloid cesspool media that is New York let's give them a gift on a silver platter; further, let's present the NCAA with a sacrificial lamb, the SJU program, smack dab in the middle of the media capital of the world. The legitimate digging into facts, never mind the innuendo / rumor will all be part of the media feeding frenzy. Salacious headlines anyone?. Do you think a program reeling from decades of mismanagement, poor play, strip clubs, paying players, marijuana, etc. will survive that scrutiny? Do you think the NCAA will give us the North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky treatment? Because I sure as hell don't.

WOW, Mike F is big time on Cluess. He wants him BIG TIME. Says Hurley uses this as a stepping stone. Cluess stays 10+ years and wants no other job. Interesting, but in the tank for his buddy Kevin.

I am not pining for Pitino, but I could give a rats A$$ what Val Ackerman thinks.

If you know anything about Cluess, it is quite likely he will never leave this area, for family reasons. In one of my favorite all time Cluess comments, he said "I don't care where I coach, St. Mary's, Suffolk CC, Post, Iona, town intramurals, it's all the same to me. I love coaching basketball."

What's the over/under on the number of Iona games Mike has seen in the last 9 years? And Post before that?

I say 3. I'm not taking his expert analysis too seriously.
They may go head to head for a recruit here and there but there are plenty of recruits to go around.
For the first time in 30 years, UConn wouldn't be using negative recruiting tactics against us if Bobby was coach.
