Same article said Pitino reached out to the school to express his interest if the position opened up...So now you know Pitino is interested..I wonder if that changes things?

Thanks for the landscape but no definitive choice.
Moose, who do you want? You have been active with the coaching discussion these past weeks.
From the names we've heard (Hurley, Cluess, Pitino) I want Hurley. I said I was all for making a change and would fully be behind any candidate. They all have their warts. We're not in a position to be having our pick of the litter with the coach that shines the brightest. I would fully support Cluess but similar I think fans would grow tired of some points quickly and Pitino sure great idea but not with NCAA violations. I could care less who he sleeps with in what restaurant.
Agree with Moose here. We won’t hire Pitino. It just won’t happen. I think Hurley makes the most sense and will do a good job. I’m not understanding what about him being quoted about learning from his brother has anything to do with anything. It’s his brother who also coaches a D1 program, a brother and a peer. Should he be embarrassed for that? I don’t get it. Hurley is young, a local guy and like I said, growing into it, but he has a high ceiling.

Hurley has only been a coach a few years and has a solid record With 4 seasons of 19+ wins and always in a position to compete. I only think he will get better, and I don’t think SJU fans will regret hiring a guy with a worth ethic and pedigree like his. I think it’s a good fit and can only help that he has an AD that he can work well with. The best programs have coaches that work well with their AD and have a clear path laid for them. What SJU was doing before hiring Cragg was preposterous and I think we are headed right direction.
That's because gimp is a wimp, Auburn had the balls to take a chance on pearl, and he rewarded auburn.

Ask rick if he plans on cheating, when he says no way, tell him straight up that he better not or he'll severely regret it.

Fire gimp, hate when people are afraid to take a chance. That's what lifes about.
Well, you could argue that Bobby G took a huge risk on hiring a head coach with zero coaching experience at any level- a risk that has now blown up in his face.
He is not going to want to make another misstep so soon in his tenure.

If this comes to fruition, then you're a BOSS. I'm in your corner on this one, as I hope it happens.

I am no Boss except in my business life. Hey I am responsible for the effort and cannot control the outcome on this unfortunately. This is above my pay grade at this time. It wasn't just our group that wanted a coaching change apparently so have to see how this shakes out. I am glad Rick did his part and called as he said he would.

Here is my big unrealistic expectation. Whoever the next coach is, I want him to get us to Friday night at the BET in his first 3 years as coach.
And I thought I was crazy wanting someone who could just get Wednesday night off. ;)

Well, at least this time you didn't go overboard with the use of exclamation points. I thank you for that.

It's all good, as "Boss" is just an affectionate slang when it comes to someone (more or less) moving to the beat of their own drum and going about their business.

Regardless, I'm all for Pitino. I'll damn sure take him--warts and all--before Cluess.

Not sure JP got all of his facts straight on the Mike Rice scenario...
I was told that the Administration would never sign off on it. I am not sure if it was ever "formally" raised.
I don't think that's the story at all, and the subject of getting an experienced guy in here last year may have been the beginning of the end.
I just know what I was told when I asked about Rice with someone very high-up. The comment was "he deserves a second chance but it won't be here. It would never be approved.

Owned thoroughbreds in the past, but stopped, due to legal and financial issues (this is before he got into coaching). I'm sure that will help endear him to Repole.
Hurley is no lock to leave ASU at this point...
But we now know Pitino has expressed interest in the position...when was the last time we had a 7 time final 4 coach express interest in coaching SJU?

Now is the time that Cragg and the administration need to decide what they want this program to be going forward and in the future. As the saying goes, 'you get what you pay for.' They cannot claim that they want to be able to compete with the big boys and compete for national titles, and then let money prevent them hiring the coach they want. It just doesn't work that way. If money is indeed an issue, then hire a guy like Cluess, and accept the fact that they'll probably be competitive every year and make the tournament more often than not, but more than likely won't ever go on a deep run in the tournament. But if they are serious about turning this program into a national contender every year, then it is their responsibility to figure out a way to make it financially feasible.

If you would have told me the night that we lost to ASU that Bobby Hurley or Rick Pitino would be our coach next season I would have never believed it. Still not a done deal, but I would do cartwheels if we hired either of these guys.

That being said.... man, Bobby Hurley would be awesome, and I have gone on record here before saying he was my number 1 choice, but..... Rick Pitino is really growing on me. To me he's in the same echelon of coaches as Roy Williams, Coach K, Calipari etc. A caliber of coach that would never consider St. John's except for in extenuating circumstances. If he wants to be here and will take the amount of money we'd be willing to offer I think you have to hire him.

Honestly I don't even think his baggage is that bad. The president of the United States cheated on his wife and continued to be the president. If that behavior is acceptable for that position, then it certainly shouldn't preclude Pitino from being head coach at St. John's University. The whole paying recruits thing is dicey, but like many have said, Bruce Pearl got accused of the same thing and took his team to the Final 4 this year... Calipari cheated in Memphis got the school on probation, and now has a lifetime contract and much success at one of the most prestigious programs in the country.

I give Tom and others credit, I am warming up to Pitino. A month or two ago I would've said Hell no.

I'd still much rather Hurley, but if we can't get him then Pitino at least would make for an interesting hire. I just don't like the idea of the NCAA hawking our program. Can Pitino really run a successful clean program? The big majority of D1 programs are dirty so that sounds challenging.

Nice job- you nailed everything from Day 1.......... Maybe future job as beat reporter???
Not sure if I should be flattered or insulted....LOL!

Real question. Can somebody explain why we should be thrilled about Bobby Hurley? He has not done anything except get to the round of 64. The ASU team we played looked terrible, we were just worse, and he has a below .500 conference record there.

What’s exciting about him?
Reality check...Hurley's no upgrade.
Pipe dream Pitino? One of the best X and O guys ever... His act of contrition would be to work at the mid-major price we'd be offering. On the down side, he'd be cleaner than Norm Roberts thanks to the stench he left at Louisville.
Cluess? Wins everywhere...but wins what? I'd love to see him as an assistant for his X and O value...but why would he do that?
Brey? Hee Haw...ain't happening.
Duke wannabes. How about experienced people...not a bunch of people waiting for Coach K to keel over.
It's a sad day, boys and girls.
No, it isn't. It's a new dawn. It'll be what we make it. Hoping for a good decision for once, based on hard-nosed perspective not Hoop Dreams.

I would love to be a fly on the wall for that meeting with the team!
I wonder if anything will leak on twitter?

A tidbit on BH. He was the type of player who thought he never committed a foul. He would show his displeasure we faces and gestures. Duke put together a low light video of BH to show him what a fool he was making of himself. Message received.

Perhaps a similar video is needed for his coaching antics.
Bobby Hurley was one of the best point guards to ever play college basketball. He was a winner, smart, gritty, tough nosed, and an extreme competitor. If I get all of that with some antics I would take it every day of the week. Booby Knight was known to be a little bit of a nut on the sideline but was a hell of a coach. and I don;t think BH is anywhere as crazy as Knight.
Hurley was good but not in top 25 college point guards that I have seen play.
And Mullin was way better and as everyone has pointed out that means nothing.
Bobby Hurley was a dominant point guard in college for a team, that I believe went to final fours in all 4 seasons. He was the coach on the court for those teams and was a great decision maker. Opinions vary, but I think he was one of the best college point guards ever. It doesn't mean it translated to pro but as a college point guard, in my opinion he was flat out awesome.

I don't disagree CM was a better college player but CM didn't run the SJ teams, the point guards did. Also, I am not going to debate CM vs BH as a coach, however, I will say one is departing for a good reason, just as one is being considered for other reasons.

A few weeks back I posted the only thing that would get us out of this mess was Repole money.

Only to be criticized ........

Takes two to tango and it would take some serious convincing for SJU higher ups to consider him...
