Mullin Stepping Down

The last few years there has been a debate around here about whether it was acceptable for SJU to have Providence or Seton Hall type success or if the goal is to emulate what Villanova accomplishes.

Pitino = Going after Villanova
Cluess = Best Case emulating the Hall or Providence
Hurley = Wild Card with upside

I say if we can get Pitino pull the trigger! Frankly somebody tell me in this day and age what is the real downside?
See Damn Yankees.
The downside? Even putting aside the moral and ethical concerns, which mean nothing nowadays, that's easy. Let's be practical. If anyone thinks that all the reasons, the dirt, behind Pitino's dismissal from Louisville have been made public, see me about a bridge. So into the heart of the tabloid cesspool media that is New York let's give them a gift on a silver platter; further, let's present the NCAA with a sacrificial lamb, the SJU program, smack dab in the middle of the media capital of the world. The legitimate digging into facts, never mind the innuendo / rumor will all be part of the media feeding frenzy. Salacious headlines anyone?. Do you think a program reeling from decades of mismanagement, poor play, strip clubs, paying players, marijuana, etc. will survive that scrutiny? Do you think the NCAA will give us the North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky treatment? Because I sure as hell don't.
you can read the transcripts online from the trials and testimony of the rats..Pitino name is never mentioned and neither is he on audio...those are facts.
WOW, Mike F is big time on Cluess. He wants him BIG TIME. Says Hurley uses this as a stepping stone. Cluess stays 10+ years and wants no other job. Interesting, but in the tank for his buddy Kevin.
——-

The problem may be that if Mr. Cluess were to stay at St.John’s for 10 years he may not have received a more attractive offer because of mediocre results.

Personally I hope whoever Mr. Cragg hires is so successful that other schools want to hire him. That is not the worst problem to have.

What's the over/under on the number of Iona games Mike has seen in the last 9 years? And Post before that?

I say 3. I'm not taking his expert analysis too seriously.
6 MAAC championships in 8 seasons, earning NCAA bids, the other two he was regular season champ, very credible showing vs. UNC this year with a sub par team after losing his best player. What else do you need to know?

Don’t know if anyone mentioned this before, but on what planet is Chris Mullin deserving of a continued chance at St. John’s? He is not a good recruiter, he doesn’t coach, he barely talks to his players, and for a guy who said he would be in every high school gym in New York, we never saw a #5 in all his time here. It may not be fair to say, but things like his sitting on the scorer’s table during his early tenure instead gives the impression at least, that he was a lazy guy. Also, not to sound like an elitist, I could not see him as a spokesman with his off hand manner of speaking. I’m around a lot of older St. John’s guys who had great respect for his achievements on the court, but did not see him as a good choice as a leader. I’m not sorry to see a guy like that go.

I read somewhere that Hurley's salary is $2.4 million. Is that correct? With a cost of living adjustment and another program reeling, would he take much less than $3 million to come here?

Pitino is a pipe dream. Bobby G. wouldn't put the Lapchick statue in front of CA because he wasn't a saint. Doubt he'd let Pitino on campus, but far crazier things have happened.

Regarding Cluess, I think the reason he has been passed over is a lack of charisma. He is truly just a basketball coach. Not a big showman or media guy; not going to wear the expensive suit and sit at the SNY Sports Desk. He's just a basketball coach.

With the right staff, I do think he could be successful here. Just not the "sexy" hire.

Pitino wants an apology from the FBI.They still haven't apologized for denying the existence of the mafia or promoting the existence of Russian conspiracy.

Anyway, Zach Brazziller is his usual impartial self, identifying Pitino as toxic moments after completing an interview with him. Did you call him toxic over the phone, Zach? Why characterize his downside in the headline when you could have easily portrayed his upside?

Is it just possible he spent far too much time at Sloan Kettering hospital at his brother's bedside. Or spent time in the offseason to see his wife and daughter? For the record, and water under the bridge, once his youngest kid was away in college, his family would have all been in NY during the season, eliminating the need for intermittent Cali trips. Not that it all matters. We simply didn't play well enough to continue this without a staff shakeup.

Right...someone who knows zilch about college hoops is giving advice. Come on. This is important.

It is not the FBI it is the US Attorney for the Southern District of NY.

The one’s who prosecuted the mob.

Get your Federal agencies straight....

Logen, you really think rick is a retard, that he'll cheat with all eyes on him, you know the higher up will be watching him closely.
What if he comes here, stays clean, kids come on his name recognition alone, and we rock nyc and msg, top 10 team every freaking year. Msg would rocking every damn game. Nova wouldn't be king every fucking year, because pitino would be here, and we'd matter again.

Yeah i want pitino here in the worst way, it kills me.
JUST WANT TO WIN.

If I had a real SJU fan personality I'd bury this thread with excessive posts and minutiae about how it's irrelevant which fed agency it is and that my point is still valid - that such agencies don't apologize. That Pitino is unrealistic in his approach and lacks humility. But context and intent be damned, you win.

The SDNY is not the FBI. Nor is it the Sanitation Department of NY. I shall step down now, and heed proper attention to acronyms in the future.

Better than we have been over the last 20 years. Sounds like all possibilities would bring a huge upside in wins and NCAA appearances. I am looking forward to the announcement. I think the school finally has the right AD in place and that any decision will be well thought out and move us forward. No more scenarios where we take huge risks for little reward. I think the risk and reward will be closely correlated.

There is no wiggle room for any new coach. The BE needs NYC like the NBA and MLB need NYC only much, much more right now. Another season or two like the last one and the whole house of cards is done.Forget the "celebrity" coaches: they just don't work out in NY. If we can get him, Hurley would be fine. He brings his family presence, contacts, and reputation, a fan base which is still under 40, and, we keep the positive press about the home town boy working his way up the ladder. The main difference is that he is a traditional working stiff who will always give you more than you pay for..

True, and I agree. I don't hate any of the options.

Serious question: if Cluess is such a great catch, what's he still doing at Iona at the age of 60? Mean no disrespect to him personally, but you'd think he would have made the leap to a high-major team by this point in his career.

If we're going to take someone in the twilight of their career, then Pitino is my choice. If we want someone who's going to be here for 20 years, then obviously a Hurley type is needed.
If you know anything about Cluess, it is quite likely he will never leave this area, for family reasons. In one of my favorite all time Cluess comments, he said "I don't care where I coach, St. Mary's, Suffolk CC, Post, Iona, town intramurals, it's all the same to me. I love coaching basketball."
No, I did not know that Cluess will never leave this area for a coaching position. Has he ever been offered a HC job for a high-major team?

In terms of the remaining players, athletic director Mike Craig said in a statement,"We met today as a team and will conduct individual meetings with each of our student-athletes to discuss the future of the program and their roles in helping our team continue to progress.”#SJUBB

Being there are so few in this area, i'm going to guess no. I think even Providence would be too far for him, but it's also possible that he would have considered a move. I'm just saying what I know he has said.

It would be a novel approach. Hire a guy who has won every single place he has been with absurdly good results, that won't cost a ton, that won't be lazy, whose kids would go through the wall for him, who is a tough disciplinarian, and can evaluate both talent and coach X's and O's. If my math is right, he is 5 years younger than Pitino, wold cost a ton less and could be here in 10 years.
