Mullin Stepping Down

The great thing about him and Pitino is no buyout in addition to being accomplished.

Under normal circumstances no way they get pried from OSU or Louisville. But now? Worth a call?

Would love to beat Xavier's ass with Matta as coach. They have become my most hated BE team the last couple of years

Have to agree, very chippy crew

Just saw this as well. According to the article, Mullin tried to hire Mike Rice last year and Gempesaw balked because he was fearful of a public relations hit. Under that reasoning, one would think there is zero chance he’ll allow a Pitino hire.
I agree. However, that is something I do hope Cragg brings to the table spending so many years at Duke. How to cheat without getting caught
There is a difference between not getting caught and having immunity once you are caught. BIG difference.

We've now released the last two coaches a few days after the season ended where our team got a rare NCAA bid both NCAA losses souring fans and leadership..
Norm was released after getting an NIT bid (his best showing) also. Going out right away in the NIT didn't help him.
Jarvis was released early in the season after his previous team won the NIT. His arrogance played into his firing as well as the team's slow start.
Fraschilla was fired after getting an NCAA bid.

Once again, clearing the deck, but the pattern is undeniably there in terms of an expectation that may not be realistic for this program.
This release is extra messy because of who the coach is but getting an unexpected NCAA bid wasn't enough to hide all the blemishes. I thought Matt bailing out was just the beginning of the unraveling of the staff. None of the remaining coaches were adept at the recruiting game and as soon as Mullin became unavailable to the press it became apparent that the separation was being orchestrated above Cragg and perhaps being influenced by big donors who had seen enough (or too little) of Chris Mullin. Also, once it became clear that an extension was out of the question the little support he had left had rendered him a lame duck which was a big blow to his ego. He went into invisible mode when Golden State sent him the same message. Losing the last 5 of 7 games may have been a bad visual but there had been countless bad visuals to overcome. It was never going to be a happy ending and it would have never happened with a competent AD and an experienced President.
All I will say at the moment is that signs of discontent were there last summer. You are likely aware also.

Eric Williamson wrote: I find it alarming that the school has yet to release an official statement regarding any of this. It's a terrible look for all parties involved to have these 'rumors' flying around. If they are true, then the announcement needs to be made ASAP.

Understand there may be reasons why no announcements can be made, but do hope someone from the administration has reached out or will reach out as soon as possible to key players such as Figgy, Heron & Simon to at least let them know the school is working hard to have staff uncertainty resolved as soon as humanly possible.

Their head coach is a psycho. So is Bobby Hurley :)

It already feels like a Hurley deal is in place to me. It could work, so I understand the hire. There will be no beef from me.

But boy, Pitino wants the job and you don't hire him? I would be making the announcement today. As to the idea that someday there would be wins to vacate? That sounds great to me - it means there were wins!

Duke and spending belong in the same sentence.

Just listened to Rothstein on the FAN. He said that Hurley is top choice but big stumbling block could be having to recruit against his brother up the road at UCONN. Also said Hurley is very well liked at ASU and has done a lot for that program.

#2 is Tim Cluess. Rothstein went on to sing the praises of Cluess and what he’s done at Iona and how he’s performed so much better than other MAAC coaches who’ve gone on to bigger conferences. Rothstein also said Pitino was probably not realistic.

Take this for what it’s worth.

Can’t argue w that

Big issue perhaps with Bobby H is how much coming back to NY area means to him. Fwiw, have heard it does, but we’ll see how much & how economics sort out if truly interested.

Adding a new coach, just doesn't feel very hopeful. Have we killed hope yet?

I agree. Our tournament appearance in DC was vacated but I still drove down with friends, watched a great day of games, and drank with some guys on the team after. The NCAA can’t take those memories :)

Pitino is a sure thing but Bobby seems to have a big head start and many eligible players to follow him here.

I am very close with my brother who lives pretty far, I would rather have him closer and occasionally have to compete against him, but that is just me.

A tidbit on BH. He was the type of player who thought he never committed a foul. He would show his displeasure we faces and gestures. Duke put together a low light video of BH to show him what a fool he was making of himself. Message received.

Perhaps a similar video is needed for his coaching antics.

Speak for yourself, Beast :) In my head Bobby is coaching our starting PG, Shamorie Ponds, on how to play with Alzonzo Verge while Heron, Simon, LJ, Precious, and Zylan Cheatham drill in the background.

Reality will probably rip through that fantasy like Hurricane Katrina.

Actually Beast, I take it as a very hopeful sign. It means the program and its new leadership is not going to accept sub-par performance, no matter who is at the helm.

The chasm between Cluess and Hurley is enormous. You don’t fire Mullin to hire a guy like Cluess.

I don’t see the big deal with Hurley competing against his brother. He will be closer to his parents and sister. He will be able to schedule a fun home and home series with Danny. They may go head to head for a recruit here and there but there are plenty of recruits to go around.
