There is risk in almost any hire. I hope this time around SJU takes less of an high upside/downside approach.
Of the last 3 hires, none had been D1 HCs in the prior 7 years, and two had never been D1 HCs. It's a little unusual to do that once let alone 3 times in a row.
No need to overcomplicate it. Hire someone whose core professional competency is coaching D1 college basketball, with a track record of success generally and whose profile suggests some upside built in associated with the SJU job specifically.
It's no disrespect to Mullin. I think a risk of hiring any great former athlete as a coach is that it's a grind, particularly at the college level. It's a 250+ days a year on the road, sleep in the office, spend down time on your phone recruiting kind of job.
Would like to see SJU hire someone who needs to succeed at SJU because coaching is their career and what will largely define their professional success. That tends to be a motivating factor.
