Mullin Stepping Down

I’ll be happy with a hardworking Hurley. Let’s hope he comes and opens that Canadian pipeline.
And won't come from me but the faces and the technicals will annoy people on here really quickly if not successful right away. Take that prediction top the bank.
I don't care about a coach taking a well timed technical foul. A tech like Hurley took up 17 points to you looked inopportune. To me it's perfectly fine since we're coming from a coach who would take a tech down 7, 8 or 9 points that puts a game further out of reach.

Should be noted ASU had 6 total technical fouls. 3 by one player. I think we came close to 6 in one game this year at CA. So the players aren't exactly emulating the coach.
Looked to me like he looked at Duke a whiny little shit. There was no plan on that tech. He didn't like the call so he complained. I hope he gets the job. Win / win for me. If I am wrong and he can succeed here great I am a ST John's fan. If he falls on his face like I expect to happen the board should be highly entertaining....
He was that type of player at Duke. The type of player who you hate to play against. But love on your team. Many examples of players like that in every single sport. My point was he didn't rest on the laurels of 17 point lead. He coached as if the game was closer. I know of a coach who would often not step on opponents necks when up big and allow teams to creep back in. But I digress. Your favorite player is guy. I'm sure that's tough for you. He's gone now. You are Cragg. Who are you hiring?

And in terms of the entertainment value sure it will happen eventually. We are St. John's. We're likely not going to roll off a streak of 4 tournaments in 5 years. So saying you will root for success but enjoy the site if not is a pretty safe bet by you.

Recently bought a new mattress. Evidently if you don't like the mattress you can replace it for another mattress. So my wife was basically picking out two mattresses. The first one and then the possible replacement. ST John's should hire coaches this way. The first coach and then his replacement in 4 or 5 years.

So who you picking Darth Vader?

Couple of things I was told:

1) Bobby is definitely interested. But if the money people in the desert step up he could say no, if not he's coming east. He's torn...

2) In the event he says no they have names lined up. Good thing is people are on the same page....

Wow, just checked in and saw the news. Guess I’ll have to change the avatar LOL, but if true, Mullin is doing the right thing. Hopeful for a good hire!

ASU being good is just as much a result of Arizona having stellar classes! Doesnt matter who is coaching NC State and they have had 3 coaches in past decade, if UNC and Duke have good recruiting classes, by default NC State will get some good kids! Same situation in AZ! Two years of the round of 64 and matched up against us in the play in game, does not equate to hiring a much better coach! We did this before and it failed

I think Bobby is a good choice and his best days are ahead of him. He works very hard, knows local recruiting scene and would hire really good assistants. I think he’s a far cry from what we had under Mullin, with a bare bones staff etc. People are saying “what has he done?” and look at some of the hot names in coaching like Oats. Some of it is taking a little bit of a leap of faith. Jim Calhoun was nasty on the sidelines much of the time but got it done. Doesn’t bother me one bit. Jim Boeheim is a total whiner, but a big winner nonetheless. Coach K is a huge whiner as well. I don’t think Hurley is the only choice but I think he’s a good one and more in the mold of what I was hoping to see here. More disciplined play and I think he could recruit very well. He also has the motor as a coach to do all the requisite things like coaching, recruiting etc.

Pitino gets us to Final Four. Would do that pretty much anywhere. Never happens and I understand that. That would be (pipe) dream choice. If Cluess were 5 years younger would be my choice. I get the Hurley thing because he is a local "name." Lavin, Mullin, Hurley.... sense a pattern. Would prefer more steak over sizzle with next hire. Hire a good X and O guy that recruits to fit his system. Mid major type which is what we should strive to be. Really what BE is now outside of Nova.

I'm still going with Pitino #1 and heard he's seriously interested, it's just admin who may not want that. I don't care that he's spurned us in the past. Don't live in the past, live in the now. He's on a discount and he's looking for 1 final job before retiring. As Bradley said, get his replacement as an assistant for 5-6 years and he will be ready to go when he retires. The stars really do need to align for us to have a chance at a huge HOF coach who has 2 championships and 7 Final Four appearances. I think he could be another Pearl...once shady but it doesn't matter if you win. People have short memories.

I also find it funny that if it is Hurley, people are already personally attacking him. The same guys who were saying "how dare you personally attack Mullin". Can't make it up. If Hurley says no or we lose the bidding war for him, would think Pitino idea becomes much more likely.

We took leaps of faith remember Roberts, Lavin, and now Mullin! Princeton HC predicted we would beat ASU in the dance, said we were more disciplined and played better defense. We beat Princeton, ASU lost to them! We played Hurley in the play in game! AZ state has talent fall in their lap, why? Because Miller at AZ has top 5 recruiting classes every year! Oats being a hot commodity has to do with Oats being a good recruiter not Hurley! Hurley admitted his brother Danny is still teaching him, how can he beat Danny for kids in the area? This is all insane talk!!

Thanks for the landscape but no definitive choice.

What are the chances of a blockbuster hire? 10%? Hope SJU has lost the mom and pop way of doing business, and hiring Cragg was a good start, but I’m always suspicious they’ll cheap out. Hope I’m wrong on that. Best wishes to Chris, hope everything works out for you!

Moose, who do you want? You have been active with the coaching discussion these past weeks.

Just saw this as well. According to the article, Mullin tried to hire Mike Rice last year and Gempesaw balked because he was fearful of a public relations hit. Under that reasoning, one would think there is zero chance he’ll allow a Pitino hire.
I wouldn't exactly say Mullin wanted Rice. There were people that did. But wouldn't term it like JP did.

From the names we've heard (Hurley, Cluess, Pitino) I want Hurley. I said I was all for making a change and would fully be behind any candidate. They all have their warts. We're not in a position to be having our pick of the litter with the coach that shines the brightest. I would fully support Cluess but similar I think fans would grow tired of some points quickly and Pitino sure great idea but not with NCAA violations. I could care less who he sleeps with in what restaurant.

That was my first reaction as well. Hoping Cragg can change the thought process and that Pitino becomes an option.
