Mo and Draft

Just read that Denver is looking at possibly drafting Moe 22nd.

Denver is 20. And Chad Ford does have Moe going there right now in his mock.
You would have to think Karl and Dunlap are talking.

Other connections could be Houston where I think CR mentioned a former Lavin guy working in basketball ops, Golden State with the Mark Jackson connection, and if Mullin lands GM job wherever that might be.

Looking at the draft board, I'd be very surprised if Moe is there at 22. I think he'll potentially be top 17. Just a guess, but lots of these guys I'm not all that impressed with. Lots projected ahead of Moe that don't have nearly the length nor skill set.

Golden State has multiple connections - their new General Manager is Bob Myers - he was recruted to UCLA by asst. coach Steve lavin, and was later team Captain for the Bruins under Head Coach Steve Lavin.

Wonder if New Orleans might look at Moe with their 2nd pick all the way up at #10 now, since they've also secured Davis with the #1? Former Lavin player and assistant coach Gerald Madkins is Director of Player Personnel for the Hornets. That'd give N.O. what KY had with Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist - only better!

I'm just going to say that making your draft picks based on personal relationships with coaches and school affiliations is going to get you fired sooner or later.

Wow can really sell these connections. How many coaches can say that a current NBA GM played for them in college?

So your saying managers in any business whether it be sports or not don't bring in people they like and are familiar with? I mean Bill Parcells comes to mind immediately as someone successful who did it.

All depends how good the people you surround yourself are.

Sparano a solid hire down with the Fins? We could debate Parcells all day.

 This is silly.
Of course people rely on personal relationships when making managerial decisions. But the GM of the Hornets isn't taking Moe in the top 10 because he used to play for Lavin.

If he drafts him that high it's because he sees something in Moe. With that said it's nice that Lavin has a network throughout the basketball industry, that's something that pays off when you least expect it.

Not saying it gets a guy picked. Just that it gives a player a better shot at a fair evaluation to have someone the evaluator TRUSTS who's seen the player play 30 or 60 games and hundreds of hours of practice time. Sometimes in only a one or two day eval (ie "Denver's having Moe in for a look Friday"), the wrong impression can be left. One team that didn't consider Kevin Love was because on his one day workout, his outside shot was off, and there wasn't enuf game film of him from his 1 college season to offset that impression. Kevin McHale was on the phone with Ben Howland, Wes Unseld, Swen Nater, Steve Johnson, and Chris Dudley (all worked with Kevin from todler thru college - as well as Love's Dad Stan, a former Baltimore Bullet center), and based partially on that imput, made the trade with Memphis, sticking THEM with OJ Mayo :) Or maybe McHale was just a Beach Boys fan, and having Mike Love (Kevins Uncle) or Brian Wilson (Kevin's cousin) around (tho not on the same days!) was a component in the decision! :)

I don't dispute that but Lavin's gonna talk up Moe to whoever asks about him, be it Gerald Madkins or RC Buford (tell me he has some relationship with him and I'll have to find someone else to put in here). Making draft picks without talking to your pick's coach is going to get you fired sooner or later.

PS you keep talking Beach Boys and you're going to force Golden Leaf out of his self imposed retirement.

And a coach talking up a player just because he played for him will cause that coach to lose credibility very quickly. Not saying Lavin shouldn't talk up Harkless at all, just talking generally. I know college coaches who won't go near some high school coaches because they don't provide an objective appraisal of their players.

Taking a look back, sure seems like Moe made the right choice. There appears to be no chance of him slipping into the 2nd round and out of the guaranteed money. Great move Moe & best of luck. Keep up the hard work.

Moe Harkless is a "sleeper pick" for the Raptors at No. 8, sources tell ESPN's Chad Ford.

This is another scenario that's very difficult to believe. There is going to be a ton of draft chatter prior to the June 28 event, but Harkless projects to be selected between picks 15-25 in the first round.

Maybe talking up wasn't the right term I simply meant that he'll likely use the same terms and assessment with guys he didn't coach/play/drink with as guys he did. Lavin has to try and get Moe drafted as high as possible by friend or stranger to show his value to prospective recruits.

Yes, CANADA , love to see Moe in Toronto.
