Agree and awesome article. I’m
Positive Anderson wouldn’t have been hired if it weren’t for Cragg. We hired a real athletic director and finally hired a real coach. Great staff seems to be following. Our administrators almost screwed it up but Repole’s outcry brought a lot of attention to their ineptitude in this realm.

I get he feeling we aren’t lucky to have Anderson and that he will be successful here for a long time. Having Cragg behind him certainly helps a lot.

Anderson hiring connection was indeed Cragg via Jeff Capel. Early in rebuild, but I much prefer CMA to the thought of Jones or Hewitt getting program headed in right direction. Cragg pulled this one out of fire and it should be a great ride.

Instead of becoming dumpster fire, we have hope, and dare I say, aspirations. Kinda nice.

The A.D. - head coach "marriage" generally works better when the AD hires his own coach rather than inheriting someone hired by his predecessor. The Cragg - Anderson duo looks like the most solid one we've had in many years. I am excited for the future of St John's basketball.

https://nypost.com/2019/05/05/an-inside-look-at-new-st-johns-coach-mike-anderson/
this is the most awesome article I’ve read by any of our local scribes over the years with a great detailed statement about who Coach Anderson is. Loved the part about being in full control of practices and not delegating. The exact opposite of our last 2 coaches. Who knows what happens and I’m not getting worked up over recruiting or going to think anyone we get right now is a program changer but I just have complete confidence Iron Mike is going to get things done. I’m rooting for Iron Mike the Coach and the person. Great job Zach with the article !!!
How are you gonna feel when he sits on the scorers table during a game?B)

Kudos to Zach for revealing the man--who and what Mike Anderson is. Mike's character resonated from the page like a picture. Great job, Mr. Braziller. Thank you.

Spent some time over at CTK today during RENS practice. I also had spent time there after both the Lavin and Mullin hires, and the level of excitment and enthusiasm over the Anderson, Cleveland and Macon hires is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Actually had some people there wearing SJU gear, which is always great to see. One coach said to me(I’m paraphrasing) “I’ve seen Anderson all over the place since he’s been hired. He’ll have St. John’s back on top in no time. And in all my years of being involved in the game, Anderson is the only head coach that I have never heard someone say a bad word about. That’s unheard of in this business. What an incredible hire for the school.” Not reporting anything we haven’t already heard, but always nice l to hear things like this directly from the sources. Seeing as CTK is the Mecca for NYC high school ball, needless to say this bodes very well for us moving forward.

As long as he is not pictured with recruits wearing flip flops I'm good.

he’s only 5’11” so might need a boost

Let me start by saying I love the hire. I feel like MA is realistically the best coach we could have got. That being said, after reading the Post article I have to play devil's advocate. With his old school style, I could see that being a turn off to certain prima Donna kids who have their eyes on the NBA. Especially the hard work he demands and the extra time after a loss. Many kids these days are social media stars out of high school who want to be pampered. So this may not be a bad thing, we just might never have a shot at certain kids in my view.

No “prima Donna” egomaniacs, likely suffering NBA delusion, and unwilling to work hard, will be a loss we can absorb with pleasure.

Valid points 112, but in this case If be ok with quantity over quality. Give a well balanced roster of 3 and 4 star kids who buy in to CMA’s mission and who may stick around for a few years, over a group of kids who may be ranked higher but who are coming here simply to showcase their talents and who have one foot out the door before they even arrive.

As I recall reading recently, I think Mike has gotten the occasional 1 - 2 5*s over the years, but has primarily recruited 3*/4* and sometimes in bunches. He fits them into his system and as I also recall he and his Staff 'coach then up' and develops them as players and men.
What a beautiful concept.
Some kids may not buy in, but I've got to think most will as well as their families.
Count me in.
Let's go Redmen.

Absolutely. I personally have no problem with kids like Greg Williams who have potential and are willing to come in and work and be low maintenance. A team filled with guys like that is not a bad thing. Just need to space out the classes.

I'm totally fine with that. It will be nice seeing kids coached up as a team

One of the other things I heard at CTK today was “he’ll get his kind of kids-good kids-who will buy in to his system”. Music to my ears.

One of the same reasons not every 5 star kid goes to play for guys Tom Izzo, Mark Few, Bob Huggins, Tony Bennett, amongst many other hard-nosed coaches who simply coach the game. Anybody imagine Jim Calhoun promised the keys to the program to anybody?

In addition, that model hasn’t worked for us. We tried it with both Lavin and Mullin. I’m more than fine with building a winning team that can sell winning and not empty promises. We aren’t going to beat Duke for talent no matter who we hire.
