Thanks Paultz.
Guessing the Post, but with my 'guessing' acumen, it's probably the NY Observer, which is now defunct. Lol.

Chicago, I'd guess the Times or Newsday just because the Post has very few two page articles, but then again, my guessing acumen is probably worse as today's Derby results will likely illustrate in spades..

Ah, 'Newsday' might be it! Don't think it's the NYT since a two-page piece would be 'yuge', but maybe. 'Good luck' in the Derby! Lol.
Hear that Coach Anderson will be in Brooklyn at tonight's Basketball Old Timer's Dinner

Coach Carnesecca is also expected to attend.
Can you please followup with the details on
How the event went?
And
Yes great our new Coach is involved with his new community :)

Been scoping out the St. John's & Arkansas teams last year, keying on team conference stats, depth, player ranks, etc.
Both teams played similar styles with similar results, both posted 8-10 records in conference with matching deficits in rebounding tallies, 3-pt and FT scoring deficits, and both booked positive margins in steals and turnovers. St. John's had 34 fewer assists in Conference while Arkansas recorded 34 more assists than its conference opponents.
Both teams booked similar deficits in total points in conference, Arkansas with a -1.5 pt deficit and Arkansas, -1.6 pts.
Arkansas was both much younger and deeper than SJU, playing 9 guys with 14mpg or more, whereas St. John's (x-Dixon) played 7 guys.
Arkansas played 5 freshmen, 2 Sophs, 1 RS Soph & 1 Jr with 14mpg or more.
St. John's played 2 Sophs, 1 RS Soph, 2 Jrs, 1 RS Jr., and 1 Sr. with similar PT ranges.
Both teams had rebounding deficits: SJU was -155 in TRB versus in-conference opponents, while Arkansas was -121 in conference.
The Hogs had 1 rebounding eater in 6'11 Soph Daniel Gafford with 5.8 DRBSg and 8.6TRB/g.
Figgy was SJU's best rebounder, with 4.8DRB/g and 6.4TRB/g.
The other big difference was in player HS ranking composition: 6 of Arkansas' Top 9 guys were 3*s, 1 was unranked, and 2 were 4*s out of HS.
4 of St. John's' Top 7 PT guys were ranked 4* out of HS, 1 a 5*, and 2 were 3*s.
Just interesting data to fall asleep to.
Lol.

Are you serving a life sentence? :)

Chicago put on NBC and watch the most exciting two minutes in sports. The below is cruel & unusual punishment you're subjecting yourself to. Season's over for now.

Good advice, NCJ!
Got the Telly on.
Thanks!

Did confirm my very bad "guessing acumen". I bet the wrong Mott horse to win (finished third) - so Johnny fannish….

Great Post article on Coach Anderson. We've got a combination of a wonderful human being and a hard working successful coach who gets it and has the successful track record to prove it. The fact that the Arkansas fans love him is evidenced by several following him to St. John's and becoming welcome posters on redmen.com.
Can't wait for next season to get here. Looks like we finally caught a break.

After disappointing tenures by the last 2 StJohn’s men’s basketball coaches who were hired by individuals with questionable experience as Athletic Directors, St.John’s sure seems to have gotten it right with the hire of Coach Mike Anderson. The difference is that Coach Anderson was hired by Mike Cragg, a man with a lifetime of professional Athletic Director experience. The “Mom and Pop” culture (a/k/a “the Harrington Culture”) associated with StJohn’s would likely not have hired the winning coach from Arkansas.

I don’t know of any trade or profession where hard work and time commitment are not key components of success. Those factors are no less important in coaching D1 men’s basketball. The above linked NY Post and Rivals articles speak of CMA and Cleveland’s focus and energy which are references I never saw regarding the last 2 StJohn’s men’s coaches.

Yep, StJohn’s finally got it right by hiring Coach Mike Anderson. I sense that the train has left the station and that it will arrive as hoped with Coach Anderson as conductor.

Can’t wait for the the summer recruiting wars to see Coach Anderson and staff working their tails off.

Coach Anderson seems like a very good man. Great article, and hopefully he's an even better hire.
Would you mind pasting a portion or giving some insight for us freeloaders?

That's weird. I don't have a premium log-in. I read the article this am, and there was no pay-wall. I just tried to click on the link to share some snippets, but when I click on the article, the pay wall is there. Perhaps I used my my 'one free' article viewing. Sorry, I can't paste at this point.

Some snippets, from memory:

Essentially, the article discusses his history - as a college basketball player at Tusla. He threw his small body around the court. He was an all-hustle kind of player. The article recalls in one game, how he was on the defensive-end of getting five or six charges called in the last five minutes of a game, for a critical victory. His nickname was "Mighty Mite" if I recall correctly. Essentially, he was a player that you instantly rooted for.

Then the article discusses his early assistant coaches days, how we worked his way up the ladder under Nolan Richardson's staff. The article discussed how Anderson drove Richardson's daughter back and forth for leukemia treatment, for no pay - that basically, from the beginning of his coaching career to now, he's a good man. That's the overall theme of the article.

Also, the article says that he runs his own practices - he doesn't delegate that to staff. I liked that aspect. He's very hands on. He focuses on defense and he absolutely works them very hard. The article gives an example of one drill when his teams practice offense/defense, the defense has to get five stops in order to get to play offense.

It was a good write-up; and touches on various aspects of his life.
Post article on our coach:

https://nypost.com/2019/05/05/an-inside-look-at-new-st-johns-coach-mike-anderson/
this is the most awesome article I’ve read by any of our local scribes over the years with a great detailed statement about who Coach Anderson is. Loved the part about being in full control of practices and not delegating. The exact opposite of our last 2 coaches. Who knows what happens and I’m not getting worked up over recruiting or going to think anyone we get right now is a program changer but I just have complete confidence Iron Mike is going to get things done. I’m rooting for Iron Mike the Coach and the person. Great job Zach with the article !!!
