It is apparent Anderson and TJ are putting in the work to establish recruiting relationships for the long term as they try to land some kids to help this season late in the game. Grab a seasoned Juco PG perhaps and add two kids with an upside to be four year guys possibly in McGriff and Maidoh and that is about the best one can expect. Word seems to be that Anderson staffs do well developing kids, which is essential for kids like the above duo.

Regarding fleshing out staff, it is clear Anderson is taking his time to get it right. I sense a name could pop up we have not heard yet.

All in all, it is early and fan enthusiasm is high as usual. That said, I get the feeling Anderson is a deliberate, nose to grindstone guy who wants his last dance to be special. It will be a challenge for him to keep his record intact this season of always being above the .500 mark if Figgy departs. I would not count him out though.
If CMA can lead us to a .500 record this year it will be an absolutely amazing accomplishment.

We’ve never hired a proven winner, with a great reputation, proven track record. Never hired a guy with plan with regard to hiring staff, well established style of play. Never hired a coach who successfully built multiple successful programs.

This is uncharted territory for us. SJU actually hired somebody qualified for this job who knows all the aspects and is excited to do all of them, including recruiting, forging relationships, building a roster etc.

SJU somehow made a seemingly wonderful hire, and I don’t think the bloom is going to come off the rose any time soon. I think everybody is already realizing that we are functioning like a normal staff with the head coach and assistants on the road all over the place. We aren’t even fully staffed, but I think being deliberate is good.

Sure it's nice to be optimistic, it is the honeymoon period. But until Anderson lands some actual four star talent the program will remain in reverse. Ponds, Simon, LJ (who seems out the door) and Clark are gone and Heron will be the only impact player remaining for what appears to be a rough 2019. Anderson is doing what he has to do right now, looking at the scraps left over for 2019, but I'm watching the 2020 class more closely. Other than five star kids we shouldn't even bother with most of the impact 2020 players will commit before we play a 2019 game. Who SJU lands for 2020 will predict whether this can be a reasonable turnaround or whether another four year slog is underway. Not saying if Anderson strikes out in 2020 it's never going to happen, but SJU now has zero high level freshman recruits (or one, depending on your opinion of Williams) for the second straight class. That has to change quickly or else the dreaded Wednesday Big East Tournament matchups with DePaul will continue forever.

On that note I sure hope Anderson does not sign four 2019 freshman. Heron is the only senior and please tell me the plan isn't to make room for freshman via kids transferring out. Four year players and stability is needed badly, so sign two more role players to go with last years bunch and save the rest of the scholarships fr the 2020 class.

That's all fair, but from all reports CMA has always won with 'under the radar' recruits. i wish i could find the article that talks about this, but he doesn't tend to rely on the 'studs'. He finds guys that fit his system and makes them better throughout the years.

unlike previous years, i'm not going to put too much emphasis on rankings. i'm going to be looking to who will fit his system, regardless of rankings...
Older article but talks about players fitting his system.

Thanks. This was the article I was thinking of.

"Missouri does not have a player who is expected to be a first-round pick in June’s N.B.A. draft, which might make people wonder: Why don’t more teams play like the Tigers?"

"“We’re a starless team,” Denmon said. “Everybody plays together. We’re the ultimate team.”"

"Anderson also said it took the right players to run the system and even he did not have enough of them during his first two seasons at Missouri. "

I get the impression that CMA is not giving up on this season. I don’t think that is how he is wired. I am not expecting an NCAA tournament bid but I think a .500 overall record will be achieved. I agree we shouldn’t load up on freshman at this late juncture but CMA needs enough players to play his style and we are missing a few. The nice thing is that if he can get the kids to play defense we can hang in more games. Williams, Wright and Heron look like good fits and I am sure he will give everyone on the bench a chance to contribute.

Don't know if it's been said, but CMA looks like a very young 59. Looks like he is a fit, high energy soul. Anyone know if he threw a strike?

St. John's coach Mike Anderson: “The most important task for me is to come in and recruit the guys that are here. Obviously, this thing will keep moving forward and so that's been my task. It continues to be a daily task.’’

Wife looks good too, so I'm thinking they lead a healthy lifestyle outside of basketball.

Cohen brought up the 40 mins of hell outside the interview. I don't know if it was Coach who responded but they said its 30 mins of hell and 10 mins of wth are we doing lol

Nice interview. Coach MA mentioned not run and gun but run and execute. Love it.

Coach has mentioned that a few times now.

CMA once again proves his defensive prowess. Throws out first pitch in Met game and they proceed to shutout the Reds!
