Quick question for Making Plays... what do Arkansas fans think of the Musselman hire? Just curious.
I think most people think it's a good hire right now. and willing to give him a chance. Me personally, I think he's a good coach, and I'm not going to bash him and I'll give him a fair shot and root for success for my Hogs. However, there are still some people, myself included, that think CMA got a raw deal and should have been given another year with the young talent he had. That's why you see a lot of Hog fans torn over the decision right now and a lot still supporting CMA, you don't see fans ride so hard for a coach too often like the people have been riding for CMA, there was companies changing their billboards around here in support of him. You even have some former Hog players torn over it, that have been very vocal about how he was treated.

We'll learn pretty soon what Musselman is made of, he's said himself he was left with a NCAA tournament team, he said the team we have at Arkansas right now has more talent than his sweet 16 team he had a couple of years ago at Nevada. He's going to be expected to win big pretty soon or it'll get ugly for him. Also, I know one thing Hunter Yurachek (Arkansas AD) did not want to see is CMA getting another job so quickly, especially a school like St. John's that has history, tradition, and the potential for CMA to win big. If CMA starts winning big here and Musselman struggles or doesn't surpass what CMA did while there, both he and Yurachek are going to be packing. In Arkansas, things like this are magnified because we have no pro teams and no other high major university, so the Razorbacks are treated the the state's pro team, and it's very unforgiving.
Dear Making Plays
The insight and history which you add to this forum about CMA and the University of Arkansas is greatly appreciated. The fact that your posts deal with facts as opposed to opinion give them greater credence in addition to their being exceptionally diplomatic.
You are a breath of sunshine on Redmen.com. Thanks again and keep posting.

Appreciate it, everybody has been welcoming and I enjoy talking hoops with you guys.

As I said in my first post, I grew up on Nolan Richardson's 40 MOH, and CMA was a huge part of that, so I'm always going to be a fan of CMA's teams and root for them. Watching that style of play is part of my childhood, I could never give that up. When CMA got the St. John's job, I was ecstatic because I get to follow a great program that's in the Big East, a conference that I've always had great respect for. I told my wife I wanted some St. John's gear for my birthday, I'm eager to see how this roster shakes out and looking forward to the season!

Hey Making,

The impression I have of CMA is that he is a very good and decent man who loves his family and his players. I also get the impression that CMA is a very hard worker which is refreshing because I, and others had the distinct impression that the past 2 StJ's coaches did not have strong work ethics.

CMA will find unbelievable love from StJohn's fans if he makes the StJ's a consistent top 3 Big East program.

Count me among the vast majority of StJ's fans who are happy to have him as our men's basketball coach.

OH,, and by the way .... welcome to the big tent called Redmen.com You continued contributing will be welcomed.

"When CMA got the St. John's job, I was ecstatic because I get to follow a great program that's in the Big East, a conference that I've always had great respect for."

We waited 20yrs for the SJU greatness to show itself, way to long.
20yrs has gone by without a single NCAA Tournament win, so you know we're a very hungry fanbase.
If CMA can bring that greatness back to a once great SJU program, and the Knicks and Rangers both suck.
NYC is his, CMA and SJU would would be the talk of the town, NYC would be his.
Mikey, make it happen, become the "KING OF NY".

Funny enough I was in Gettysburg checking out the city and all its history (big history nerd here) and I was wearing a SJ sweatshirt. A middle-aged man came up to me while with his wife and he asked, "did St. John's hire a coach yet?". I said they had and when I told him who it was he replied, "Who? What connection does he have with the NYC area?". I told him, "none...he was the Arkansas coach" and he looked confused and thanked me for the info haha. Really is a small world and forget how big a reach we really have at SJ. I also think the NYC connection is overstated. IMO we should try to keep realistic local recruits home when possible but also realize we need a national presence and don't want more of that commuter school vibe we still grapple with.

Early in new regime, but it appears the chemistry between Anderson and longtime sidekick TJ Cleveland is clear and a key ingredient going forward.

Mike-I had a similar thing happen to me. When I was out shopping for food over the weekend, a middle-aged woman spotted my St.J baseball cap and commented with a smile saying,"We finally have a coach." I told her I was excited for the hire and was looking forward to his success.

Mike Anderson, who was named the 21st head coach in the history of St. John’s Men’s Basketball last month, will throw out a ceremonial first pitch before the start of the Mets-Reds game at Citi Field on Thursday afternoon. The first pitch is slated for 12 p.m.

Smart for CMA to connect with Felipe, who has a relationship with LJ's adviser (Alex Arias).

I also don't doubt he recruited (or attempted to recruit) Lopez when he was an assistant with Arkansas. So, there may have been some form of familiarity. They did land Kareem Reid from the same class.

Seems to me the local coaching establishment has longed to get some “ love” from St. John’s and.......
Finally it’s happening and
Fruit will be borne!

Love from the southern charmer no less...so much for those NYC area connections lol

It is apparent Anderson and TJ are putting in the work to establish recruiting relationships for the long term as they try to land some kids to help this season late in the game. Grab a seasoned Juco PG perhaps and add two kids with an upside to be four year guys possibly in McGriff and Maidoh and that is about the best one can expect. Word seems to be that Anderson staffs do well developing kids, which is essential for kids like the above duo.

Regarding fleshing out staff, it is clear Anderson is taking his time to get it right. I sense a name could pop up we have not heard yet.

All in all, it is early and fan enthusiasm is high as usual. That said, I get the feeling Anderson is a deliberate, nose to grindstone guy who wants his last dance to be special. It will be a challenge for him to keep his record intact this season of always being above the .500 mark if Figgy departs. I would not count him out though.
