Never seen a team of 5 star, one and done talents actually ever win the championship.. it’s crazy to say, there still is no shortcut for outworking and building your roster the right way.. one built to last and get better. I feel like CMA will have better luck at St. John’s, and he’s never been in a region as furtile with basketball players and talent as he is right now in Queens.. I feel like he’s about write a hell of an ending to finish out his career.. hopefully he kills it.
Let me start by saying I love the hire. I feel like MA is realistically the best coach we could have got. That being said, after reading the Post article I have to play devil's advocate. With his old school style, I could see that being a turn off to certain prima Donna kids who have their eyes on the NBA. Especially the hard work he demands and the extra time after a loss. Many kids these days are social media stars out of high school who want to be pampered. So this may not be a bad thing, we just might never have a shot at certain kids in my view.
Since I've been following closely, one thing I've learned is that recruiting matters, however I believe coaching/development is 70% of the equation. As long as we can consistently land top 150 type kids with the occasional top 50 stud, I think we should be ok. The key is scouting and development. We need to identify diamonds in the rough and develop them to a high level. I've never seen a SJ team that looks totally different (in a positive way) from freshmen players to seniors. I hope this is the end of that. I hope we are able to recruit pretty well, because I wanted Hsu and Borman, however coach decided that he has better chemistry with his guys who are supposed to be solid, so I will trust him until proven otherwise. I really hope we get skilled bigs with real size, not projects from OSNA who just started playing basketball 3 years ago. Hope MA saw that it killed us last year not having any.

Duke and Kentucky both won titles with One and Done's leading the way. Anthony Davis and Jahlil Okafor years.

True that a couple of teams have done it, but..

That Kentucky team won with a generational talent.

And while Okafor was their best played, that duke team had a number of upper classment on the team.

Most Kentucky fans are over the one-done-model. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cal jumped to the NBA once the draft rules change.

CMA instituting a new culture, molding the remaining roster in his system. I'm convinced that next season's team will make us proud. Go Johnnies!

Led the way, but was bolstered with veteran talent on their teams as well. Lamb, Darius Miller, and Duke had some upperclassmen as well.

The three best players on each of those teams were freshman.

I think it depends on who returns for us and who CMA and staff can sign this late in the year.
But yeah, I agree Knight.
If just Heron and the other guys all return, so 8 guys, I think CMA will bring in his 'pieces' and we'll be 'happily' surprised at the results.
Because it truly is all about 'pieces' to Iron Mike.
13 players logged minutes last year, 6 were Freshmen, only 2 4*s on the roster; 4 guys logged from ~29 - 31 mpg, 5 guys logged 15 - 17 mpg, and the rest had cameos, but he plays a lot of guys.
Pieces.

I just don’t think they win the title without that veteran leadership. AD wasn’t the AD of today. Good, but limited. Those vets played huge for the Cats when it mattered the most

Even though we are behind the 8 ball in recruiting. Have to admire his work ethic and methodical, thoughtfull, assembly of the staff.

CMA has secured two commitments pretty quickly
If they are BE caliber players, that's pretty impressive
Especially at this time of the year where the pickings are usually pretty slim
Kudos CMA!!!

Thanks to CMA for assembling a very capable staff (still in progress) and jumping into recruiting players to fill the roster for next season. Well done and good luck going forward.

IMO that's a huge "if"

I agree Monte that player caliber level is a huge variable.
Lemme say again that I think a key component to CMAs team is depth wherein he plays 9+ guys mixes them in and out, mostly 3* kids full of energy and drive and ‘coaching them up’ they win.
He was 18-16 overall and 8-10 in the SEC last year, playing a horde of freshmen and a gaggle of sophomores.
The totals aren’t impressive but the achievement is, imo.
One irony is I bet Musselman will have a dangerous team next season, comprised mostly of CMA’s young team.
Funny, how that goes.

CMA has to grab who he can at this point CD, and hope he finds a few diamonds in the rough. While I haven't had a chance to look over the roster that CMA left behind, I'll assume that most of the kids are relatively highly ranked(top 150?). And while rankings aren't everything, they are something. So lets hope that our 2 new recruits turn out to be those diamonds. We'll all be rooting like hell for them!

What impresses the hell outta me from CMA's team last year is that of the 9 guys that averaged 15+ mpg, 2 were unranked out of HS (sophs), 3 were ranked #s 256, 305, & 325 (Fr., Jr., R. So.), with 3 ranked #s 139, 158, 171 (all freshmen); the 1 4* was a sophomore and ranked #45 in HS (Daniel Gafford).
One unranked guy logged 29mpg and the redshirt sophomore who ranked #325 in HS averaged 30mpg last year. All rankings are from 247sports.
Very impressive achievement imo by both the players and the coach.
Can't wait for next season to begin.

You're researching this stuff like you're gonna write a book or something ;) ;) Well done!

Questions remain about what Mike Anderson might accomplish in Queens. The scrutiny received throughout St. Johns’ coaching search and the hiring of Anderson was rather fierce. However, Anderson has never been one to let outside noise affect how he does his job. The program has seen a handful of transfers and decommitments, which could put the program back another year before contending in the Big East.

But it does seem as though Anderson has a long-term vision. Hiring TJ Cleveland, an assistant coach on Anderson’s staff at Arkansas who is highly respected in the business, was Anderson's first win. He then secured three-star guard Jon McGriff, and the Red Storm are also involved for late bloomer Chris Maidoh. But Anderson’s fate will be determined with the 2020 and 2021 classes and whether he can develop relationships with the powers that be in the region.
