Mike Anderson

I'm born, bred and raised in the south. If any of y'all are familiar about anything when it comes to the south, one thing many of us seem to possess is charm. Mike Anderson seems to have it. He also reminds me of your typical southern baptist preachers by the way he presents himself. I'm not saying he'll automatically cultivate living rooms and consistently grab us 5-star and high-level 4-star players, but I believe he and a solid staff will be able to garner their share of 4-star kids. He seems geniune, and that may help along the way when targeting kids and their parents/guardians/coaches/advisers.

I'm not sure what can or will occur, but sometimes fortune favors the brave. In this case, Anderson was brave enough to take on this job, so he may be fortunate enough to have some success here.

I'm looking forward to our future prospects.

I don't care what the few negative people here have to say. We are lucky to have MA as our next coach. Fact is that his winning percentage of about .650 is the same as Cluess has had at Iona. MA has accomplished this at the highest levels of competition. Plus this isn't a small sample size. We are talking almost 2 decades worth.

Plus almost 2 decades under another tremendous coach

I think Dink has the right idea, especially if he is going to recruit from outside the metro area and tell parents he will watch out for their kids in the big, bad city.

I have guarded optimism about this hire. Mike was by the far the best option of what we were left with on that last day. If we had hired Jones or Hewitt, I felt our chances of remaining a viable Big East program would continue to fade. I feel like Mike gives us a chance to maintain some dignity and possibly get the program headed back in the right direction. I have no delusions that we will be competing for National Championships. At this point, I would be thrilled if we have a winning record and are in the hunt for NCAA tournament most seasons and finally win a game.
I was hoping dee would show us Coach K's instructions on how he built an android known as Mike Cragg, and sent him to Queens, so he could demolish the St. John's men's basketball program.

The truth is Dee’s posts on this thread welcoming CMA are so outrageous they merit no response on our part. To compare a 17 year continuous winning record at high levels to Norm Roberts loosing record at Queens College prior to taking over the SJU job shows either a complete inability to analyze or smacks of some other agenda.
Bye dee is all I have to say and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Everyone just relax. Do not attempt to understand or convince this poster by engaging.

This is just dee being dee. That is all you need to know.

It’s pretty funny because we as fans must take things into perspective. I think SJU fans sometimes come across as unreasonable and I don’t think that is true at all. Mike Anderson was just fired literally because he didn’t make the national championship or close in the last 3 years.

SJU fans have been searching for an oasis in the desert for decades, just hoping and praying to make the tournament and not have a scandal. SJU fans are some of the most knowledgable and passionate on the net with the best message boards on the net. This is merely a passionate fan base that has hung on for a long, long time hoping for a glimmer of consistently competing and we haven’t gotten there because of mismanagement.

I really like this Mike Anderson hire. First coach who has shown he has the chops at 3 schools, with a wealth of experience behind him. I’m happy to see SJU fans excited about this one. I think/hope we finally have some reason to be excited.

Anderson seems like a really good man and coach that everybody can rally behind. Will be exciting and I hope Cragg and the institution give him a good amount of time to build sustained success. He had already proven he can do it. Just give him time.

I like the hire, but as with everything I have questions that only time can answer.

Will the Andersons assimilate to living in NYC?
I was a little shocked he took the job without seeing our facilities. Will this be a problem at a later point?

I'm not sure how coaching searches go, but doesn't it seem rushed? Got the call Tuesday and by thursday he took the job. From what I read is the negotiations took place at a law office in LI and not at the school. Just a little Odd to me.

With that said, I hope CMA loves NYC. I believe in his message, i hope he succedes during his time here at SJU

As the situation devolved and we began to feed on our own this coach appeared and brought with him the one element indispensable to all fans - hope.

Bravo!
He's one of 5 head coaches with 15 years experience that have never had a losing season. WTF. Why the shade?
After Pitino (the only slam dunk hire), MA was the best on the list. Most, if not all, coaches ultimately have detractors. As a co-worker once said “everyone is the same old $hit to someone”.

It’s why the TC support wasn’t there. He, like all but a few coaches, was not nearly a slam dunk and his warts were there to see for folks who live in this area. Expectations at power 5 conferences are in a different stratosphere and hence the critiques.

After watching the CMA press conference I have come to the conclusion that we have hired the best coach for our program.
He plans the style of play that will be fun to watch. Thanks to Mike Cragg for this coach. Ok, now fix or replace CA and we'll all smile.

I don’t know why some are negative on this hire, and a couple of you surprise me. Who cares if Arkansas fans feel 3 out of 8 years to the tournament wasn’t good enough for them? They leave out the fact that they missed the tournament 3 straight years before MA took over, so what break does he get for getting the program on track his first couple of years there? He made it 3 of the last 5 years...was that not good enough? What about the mediocre program at Missouri that he took over and elevated to three straight tournaments before heading to Arkansas? Why are some taking such a myopic view of his record? And you kept your season tickets with the lazy coaches and those with no experience that we’ve had recently, but give them up with a guy with this resume? Smh...

Anyway, I don’t think we settled with this hire. He is an excellent coach and he wants to be here. And he may very well compete for a championship, as his past success suggests he’s more than capable. 3 guys made the final four for the first time in their careers this year, proving that it can happen with hard work, good talent, good coaching and the right circumstances. I have high expectations of Coach Anderson and of this program. We didn’t settle by hiring a professional coach and winner. Maybe the circumstances will be right for him this time to take it up another level. Thank you Mike Cragg for making this happen.

Mark Redmen posts that SJU intends to have four members of staff involved in recruiting which is four times the number from the old staff. Since recruiting is the most important part of a successful program this seems like an excellant idea.
If the prior staff put in the same effort they would probably still be here.

I find it a little odd that all this time has passed and we still don't know the contract details. But hoping it's a long term deal. I want CMA to be around for a long time. Gotta give him sometime to put this program on the right track.

D'Lo-
Everyone is saying he isn’t a New York guy so what!!!! I wasn’t either but came to love the city and it adopted me so I think he will be fine let the man work!! @StJohnsBBall

I hope this information never gets out. Contracts are used to recruit against.

I think the how he and his wife will assimilate in NYC talk ironic as our last head coach hired was a born and raised New Yorker and his family moved back to California after one year. We know coach Anderson has some extended family that works in Brooklyn.
