For those concerned about Mike Anderson not having strong local recruiting ties, let things play out with his staff. There’s a strong sense that St. John’s was already planning on bringing in local recruiting help regardless of the hire. #sjubb

Two thoughts on Mike Anderson: 1. He knows how to win in a power conference. When you consider he's gone to 3 NCAA Tournaments in last 5 years in a rising SEC, that's telling. 2. His teams play a unique style + St. John's is going to have what it's been longing for - an identity.

Anderson is one of just 4 active Division I head coaches with 15+ years of experience and no losing seasons, along with Mark Few, Tom Izzo and Roy Williams. Impressive company. #sjubb
So it seems there is a good plan in place. That is music to my ears. Thank the lord on this holy day.

I have hope and optimism for Mike Anderson's time as our head coach going forward. That said, I am hoping for all of our sakes that we don't revisit the darkside of the Mike Jarvis era. The Jarvis era ended with total alienation of the local basketball community, scandal and crippling sanctions. Mike Jarvis was given the keys to an incredible array of talent coming in the door and really ran with it. Unforunately the wheels came off the bus and in the end he left the program in worse shape than any other coach in our history.
Anderson's walking into a completely different situation than Jarvis did. Let's hope his situation ends up different from Jarvis's as well.
10th times a charm.

Officially worried now.
Defended Mullin because he was Mullin and was afraid things could get worse and they almost did.
Not a Lavin fan but did enough considering he was coaching at a wasteland and got us into two tourney's.
Really only coach I complained about was the worst coach in the history of sports whose only redeeming quality was his supposedly a "nice guy". And you defended Norm to the death so the old saying about glass houses thing applies here. At least Mullin supplied me with great childhood memories. You defended a guy that said hello to you once? Lent you $5 dollars? No one ever explained to me what made him such a "nice guy". My best guess is that he simpy wasn't Mike Jarvis.
Have a sense of humor.
And then check your PM so we can once and for all settle the Norm fantasy you have.

It's funny how things work out.

The most pivotal player is making this day happen is probably former St Ray's McD AA point guard Kareem Reid.

It was an Arkansas assistant coach names Mike Anderson who convinced Reid in 1995 to forget teaming up with Felipe Lopez and leave NYC for Little Rock.

Mahoney was all in on Tarik Turner, who while being a great guy, super alum, proud member of SJU family, was the weak point on teams that desperately needed David Cain 2.0.

Although Reid wasn't able to duplicate the success of the prior years, he became the Razobacks all time assists leader.

Mahoney was soon fired and well the rest is SJU history.
Was surprised last night at the reminder that Reid never played in the NBA
Sub six foot PG with an inconsistent jumper. Just like David Cain.

We have a proven coach from a power conference with a great resume. Lets get positive thinking back on this board. I'm hoping we hear about a strong staff in the coming days.

Only PM was from 3 months ago, but everything I say is half in jest. But my only Norm fantasy came true when he got fired. Although I did have one back in the day involving Jennifer Anniston in a cheerleading outfit with me after Larry Wright hit a game winning jumper. Since Norm would have been the coach he was technically there but he played a very, very small role.

I would be surprised if Queens native Hsu, given connection to LJ and his recruiting prowess, is not name to the staff

One of the benefits of you being on the other side of the Pond is getting your reaction on news that you find out when you wake up that has been posted here.:) :) :)

He seems like a solid choice.

I know it may be a long shot but if I were him, one of the first things I would try to do is convine LJ to stay and rerecruit Mack.

If everyone else stays, there starting 5 would probably be:

C: Steere
PF: Figueroa
SF: Heron
SG: Williams
PG: Mack

Backups: Roberts, Keita, Wright, Caraher, Earlington.

That team will be a lot more talented than what Mullin started with. I read that he likes to press often so that should appeal to a lot of guys because they will get their share of minutes.

Agree. Mack is Lovett 2.0
Let him and mommy go with Mr. Shorty lol

Good hire. Needs a staff with at least one local connection, but I'm sure that will happen. Amazingly he is the first actual professional coach SJU has had since Fran. If you set aside the "not from here" thing - which I think is probably the best bet, though not 100% - it could potentially be a borderline great hire (in SJU terms, defined as no NCAA wins since before most of our posters were born).

Have to give tremendous credit to A.D. Cragg for landing the plane safely after flying through all sorts of turbulence.

Coach Anderson is really going to put his "no seasons under .500" mark to the test in the fall if he can't recruit back some of our guys and bring in a couple of grad transfers or JUCOs, but I suspect he will do just that. His style should be pretty easy to sell to players.

Redmannorth wrote: As others have pointed out the AAU power brokers don’t send their kids to SJU anyway so what is the real diffference ? In 5 recruiting classes Mullin was able to get 1 high level NYC kid. It’s seems evident the NYC kids want to leave the city for a different kind of experience while kids from smaller cities are excited to get the NYC experience , just look at the composition of last years roster. Dinkins posted the top juco players and mentioned that a few are available. If we can get some for next season we could have a good foundation to start with and have a solid season. I fully agree with his suggestion I Don’t really care where the players come from as long as there is a recruiting plan and a system in place going forward. The lack of NYC connection is way overblown in my opinion. Just recruit and win.

Couldn't agree more RMN. Don't want to sound sacreligious, but this is the least solemn Good Friday morning I can remember!
As far as recruiting, I think that will be a home run so long as we get one AC with strong metro area ties who is a strong recruiter. Couple that skill set with Anderson's proven ability to recruit talented kids who can run and defend and his deep recruiting ties to South & Midwest and we could have the perfect recruiting storm. Kids from those areas whose family might be reluctant to let them go off to NYC will be comforted by turning them over to Mike Anderson a guy with similar roots.
This guy went to NCAA 3 times in five years with both UAB & Missouri (Sweet 16 with UAB & Elite 8 with Mizzou) and another 3 times with Arkansas. Finally, while he is a humble guy, I expect he will have a real chip on his shoulder after the Arkansas termination. I am optimistic going forward and do not think it's far fetched that we could be competitive in BE next year if he retains existing players and picks up a couple of spring recruits; good track record with JCs as Dink & others have pointed out.
Sorry for long-winded post, but I am beyond relieved at Cragg's deus ex machina!

Anderson’s style is going to be a real change for other Big East teams. Defensive pressure and pace are going to change. We played fast before but mainly on offense. Gonna be fun. I think the NY ties thing is overrated too. If Anderson recruits well and wins, he will get that monkey off our back as well and show that SJU can be a national program. Gonna be fun.
