Mike Anderson

It is Good Friday and for those who celebrate this day or are aware of this day - I had a prayer site pop this message to me in this early morning:
Positivity can come out of such a dark day.

I immediately thought of this past week and perhaps positivity - in the form of Mike Anderson - has come out of our dark days,

All the best :)

So the other two finally moved out of the way, and that allowed Cragg, person hired to direct the athletics department do his job. And guess what? He managed to salvage the situation and get a very solid candidate.

What an amazing concept.

“ One of these days Alice, one of these days...St. Johns will get the hiring of a coach right!” lol

What a wonderful feeling to hire a competent coach for the first time in decades!

I don’t know if it will he at MSG at the BE tournament or after a regional final in the NCAA’s but I envision Mike cutting down the nets for this program. Brick by mother ****ing brick we will get there baby!

I have hope and optimism for Mike Anderson's time as our head coach going forward. That said, I am hoping for all of our sakes that we don't revisit the darkside of the Mike Jarvis era. The Jarvis era ended with total alienation of the local basketball community, scandal and crippling sanctions. Mike Jarvis was given the keys to an incredible array of talent coming in the door and really ran with it. Unforunately the wheels came off the bus and in the end he left the program in worse shape than any other coach in our history.
Jawrvis failed because of his ego. Anderson seems ridiculously humble for a guy with his resume. On the day he was fired from his dream job, he dropped this:
The only thing he lacks is a New York connection. Must sign a strong staff and avoid the problems of the last four years. Players and fans will love his style of play.
If he was signed right after the Hurley turndown and avoided what seems like months of angst we all would be saying home run.
As others have pointed out the AAU power brokers don’t send their kids to SJU anyway so what is the real diffference ? In 5 recruiting classes Mullin was able to get 1 high level NYC kid. It’s seems evident the NYC kids want to leave the city for a different kind of experience while kids from smaller cities are excited to get the NYC experience , just look at the composition of last years roster. Dinkins posted the top juco players and mentioned that a few are available. If we can get some for next season we could have a good foundation to start with and have a solid season. I fully agree with his suggestion I Don’t really care where the players come from as long as there is a recruiting plan and a system in place going forward. The lack of NYC connection is way overblown in my opinion. Just recruit and win.

I admit I don’t know much about Coach Anderson, but what I do know I like.
1. Coach Anderson has won in 2 major conferences: the Big 12 & most recently the SEC
2. His teams play a fast uptempo offense.
3. He is said to be hard worker- something missing from past several StJohn’s coaches
4. Coach Anderson recruited well at Arkansas and it should be a heck of a lot easier to get quality recruits to commit to attend St.Johns in New York than to move to Arkansas.

Let’s hope.

Happy for this save. Actually, more than that. It is a quality hire under circumstances that seemed unlikely most of yesterday. Hoping that some of the kids on the fence (including Herron, Figgy and maybe even the 2020 recruit whose name escapes me) will decide to hold.

And, hopefully, we can grab a few late available guys or grad transfers who can help next year.

Still the bad taste of the process will take a long to rinse, but let's look ahead.
Wasn't sure where to put this, but we need a PG, and Jaylen Fisher was being recruited by Arkansas and took an official visit there back in 2015.
Saw that last night while look through some misses he had.
I admittedly know nothing about Arkansas. And I might be out of line but I can't imagine its an easy school to recruit to?

Welcome aboard coach. He was by far the best option of the last group of candidates that was left and I think kids are going to love his running style of play. He also places a huge emphasis on defense and rebounding which means Keita is announcing his transfer in 20 minutes :) One thing that I am trying to put my finger on is the prospective assistant names that are already been thrown out there. This means he was hired with the caveat that someone in administration will have input in the assistant choosing process. Does this reek of desperation for the job by Anderson or is it him taking a whatever it takes attitude off the bat to be successful here? Either way I like the hire and also hope we hear Rasheen Davis and Jay David's name mentioned as possible coaches with the latter being absolutely perfect for a DOBO job :)

You honestly believe that happened all in 24 hours? Repole went way over the top, even swiping at Bill Collins, chairman of the BOT.

As someone who has run a bunch of things in my life, I coined a phrase "dysfunctional in committee" mostly about myself because there were times when as the head of something I had autonomous control, while at others, I was simply member of committee. I had to check my ego, my will, the strength of my voice in those situations because in those I had a role, not control, had a voice, not the ultimate say, and strong dissent in committee can be disruptive.

I suspect Repole, who has now had it his way or the highway in 3 companies he's owned, and a 4th that he led marketing and sales from nearly day 1, never learned that lesson and as a result at SJU wanted "my will be done" and not e a collaborative part of things.

Last night we celebrated Holy Thursday. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed "but they will be done, not mine" as he prayed for courage to face what was in front of him.

Misplaced post, but perhaps far more than Repole putting our school in the worst possible light was that he wasn't dead center in the decision process.

He's 60. The game is definitely trending towards younger coaches. I wouldn't call it desperation but I think its fair to say we could be his last chance at it.

Supposedly there were some assistant 'demands' we can say from admin. And that did turn off some. But I'm ok with it. It is a bit of a foreign land to him.

In terms of DOBO and David. Just technicality but if we did that we couldn't get Curbelo, no? Doesn't he have to be a full time assistant?

It's not Kentucky, but....
Great facilities.
Great fan base (aka the only game in town)
SEC.
Winning tradition.
Has a lot going for it.

I've also been able to quickly pick up that Kentucky fans HATE Anderson from the few articles, videos, tweets I've seen.

Should we be concerned that only the NY Post is reporting this? Nothing on any major sports sites.
