Mike Anderson

I agree Mike Anderson’s Staff composition is key to future success and he should have a NY Metro-connected guy, but it’s more critical that he is committed to recruiting and that his staff is full-bore locked and loaded on recruiting wherever the talent is, not exclusively in the NY Area.
For example, how many of our players were from the NY Metro the past 4 years?
Ponds, Ellison, Earlington...am I missing somebody?
And we failed on all those local 2019 guys we were after.
IMO, it’s key to be hungry, honed, and focused ‘wherever the talent is’.
If we do that, we’ll be more than fine.

Decided I was out of here today. I hate what this board has become. Just a last post to say I’m very happy for my favorite college basketball team. They pulled off a miracle today given the circumstances of the past few days. Anderson probably has as many or more wins than all St. John’s coaches combined since Louie. Bye
The board was everything it needed to be. Bobby and Oliva turned this into the worst coaching search I've ever seen, and it wasn't even close.

And what's the point of leaving after we've seemingly pulled a rabbit out of a hat, and 95 percent of the board is happy?
Can't blame him for wanting off this thing and the unnecessary 'fire mullin', 'fire whoever' fiasco that this board perpetuates every 4 years.

This was completely unnecessary drama. We had a worthy coach, a legend, and a solid team coming in.

We are now in yet another pointless, tiresome rebuilding process. A process that had already painstakingly transpired after a series of depraved and embarrassing scandals. We had finally reached stability - something that seemed impossible only 10 years earlier.

This board has been a virus on sju basketball. I applaud anyone with the stones to call it out.
Liz come to bed, it's almost 10 o'clock.

They didn't hire my guy Jim Jones, but I'm still here. I had my Kool aid chilling in the fridge all day.

How is it a rebuild if they keep LJ and Heron on board? Cuz Trimble left? Cam left before Mullin did, do he wasn't coming either way. We have a nice foundation for next year, now it's up to coach Anderson and his AC's to grab some players to round out the roster. Too many of you have forgotten what a real coach can do with a group of good players. We haven't had a real coach since Jarvis (not a fan of how he ran his program, but the man could coach). Dunlap was a good coach, but whatever you get my point. Aside from Pitino, this is the best we could have hoped for.

We are not necessarily doing a major rebuild. I think Anderson has a better chance at retaining kids than Mullin would have. The only recruit Mullin had coming in (Cam) transferred once Matt left.

The best thing about family members of fired coaches is that they eventually leave the board.

I would have loved to have seen last year's team under Coach Anderson. With great guards like Simon and Ponds in a 40 minutes of hell system it sure would have been fun.

3 calls Coach Anderson needs to make tomorrow: LJ, Mustapha, and Curbelo. And if he has extra time may as well do his due diligence with Precious, Cam Mack, and Vladir Manuel.

What a difference a day makes. We finally have some hope again.

In a way, it's coming full circle for Coach Anderson.

His first year as D1 head coach was in 02-03, with UAB. He took that team to the NIT, where they won two games, before being beaten in the semifinals by.... St. John's.

Just a little, pointless factoid.

Wow, huge. Went to bed thinking the worst with Jones and woke up to this.

Honestly I hope he calls everyone who stuck with STJ through this. I hope he LJ, Heron, Williams, ME, IS, DC and GStJ (forgive me I haven't looked to see if JR and SK entered the portal) all get together at CA and discuss the future over a few slices.

I really hope GStJ is retained (if he wants) or absent that anyone with any juice left at St John's makes phone calls on his behalf. He could have easily cut ties and left.

Wasn't sure where to put this, but we need a PG, and Jaylen Fisher was being recruited by Arkansas and took an official visit there back in 2015.

LJ and Heron are good enough building blocks to build an over .500 squad. Williams, Wright, Caraher and Steele are good building blocks. If Anderson can grab a few more bodies he can have a decent first season.

The bigger question is if all the current players can buy into 40 minutes of hell.

Well then...
Lol.

Looking at his past recruiting he did very well in the JUCO ranks. Hopefully he has a couple on his watchlist that he can call.

Arkansas definitely did a great job blending in jucos during their most recent glory years -- Corey Beck and Alex Dillard off the top of my head,

Nice hire. I was irate all day and went to the Yankees game to get away. Needless to say, I am thrilled that we came away with someone who can stop the bleeding and potentially put a solid product on the floor next year. Another positive about MA is that his style fits many of our current players who were recruited to play in an up tempo offense. This includes Eli Wright.

I don't know exactly how this played out behind the scenes, but I sense a tip of the cap to Mike Cragg is in order. I think Mike is a professional and I hope he stays. That said, "Mike's Miracle" does not excuse the hideous job search nor the dysfunction attributed to Bobby and Joe.

Lastly, at the risk of sounding like a complete malcontent, I was hoping our next coach would not be of the "run-and-gun" style. I know it comes with a lot of excitement, but it also comes with turnovers, bad shots and rebounding deficits. Again, I am all in on Anderson and acknowledge we went from complete disaster to a (potentially) good situation.

Welcome Mike! You have my support.

OMG I took the day off from the site cause I needed a break from the roller coaster. Just saw this the change to the title of the thread and read it all. I've had hope with several of the new coaching hires here of the years but this time I have hope with good reason. SJU has finally hired a real coach who's had a lot of success in high D-1 basketball and knows what he's doing.... wow wow wow... from a potential scraping the bottom of the barrel disaster to to a very solid, experienced coach with a system and the coaching skills and recruiting chops to make it work. Hire Borman to try to pull in some key NY Ren talent, another recruiter with local ties and use his connections in the South and Midwest as well. There's hope for the future and this time its actually based on something. Very happy camper tonight!

Welcome Mike glad to have you on board. Thank goodness for Cragg we avoided what could have been a complete disaster. The man is a proven coach which is all we wanted. Hopefully the Borman rumors are true, that would be a smart hire considering the NY Rens are the best AAU team in NYC. Thats how teams operate now a days, hire an AAU guy to get the connect.

Anderson should be able to recruit the southeast states which have a ton of talented kids. Maybe hire someone who recruits the DMV area (Hatten?) and we have the entire east coast to draw talent from; in theory at least. Its been mentioned already MA has good JUCO connects which can really help bridge gaps to avoid complete rebuild seasons. Hopefully RMNorth is right and Curbelo is pretty much a lock to come here. Keep LJ and Williams and try to get Mack and Manuel to recommit and we are looking pretty good.

I think Heron goes pro so that probably means Tabor is out too but maybe they come back who knows. Either way I think we are in good hands with the Mikes, hopefully get a third one back on board (Repole) and get cracking on those facility upgrades ASAP. We seem to have made out pretty good I thought we were doomed. This is why Cragg was hired let that man do his job.
