Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

SJU Press release

QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's University has announced that it will create and implement a McLendon Leadership Initiative Future Leader position within its athletic department beginning this October. The position will assist many areas of the Red Storm Athletic Department serving as the Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics.

The funding for the position will come from the generous financial support of St. John's Men's Basketball Head Coach Mike Anderson and McDonald's.

"I've been able to get as far as I have in my career thanks to the support of several key people who showed me the ropes and taught me how to act not only as a coach, but as a man," said Anderson.  "I believe the McLendon Leadership Initiative will help facilitate those kinds of relationships for young men and women that might not otherwise have an opportunity to get their foot in the door. I can't wait to see the real and lasting impact that this initiative will have on college athletics."

The McLendon Minority Leadership Initiative is a coach-driven initiative that provides diverse college graduates a jump-start to their careers through practical experiences and opportunities to build their network while instilling in them the values of John McLendon: Integrity, Education, Leadership and Mentorship. Participants in the initiative are known as MLI Future Leaders.

"We are thrilled to create this opportunity to help launch the career of a future leader," said Director of Athletics Mike Cragg. "I am excited to work closely with this position on a daily basis, as it fits perfectly into the St. John's Athletics culture and aligns with the foundational pillars established by our Council on Community, Culture & Social Justice."

As a program sponsor, McDonald's in fueling the significant growth of the MLI Future Leaders class from year one to year two, generously laying the financial groundwork for participating universities to provide employment experiences for the 2021-22 class.  In addition to hands-on-work experience, the cohort will participate in bi-monthly educational series, presented and facilitated by McDonald's executives, to provide lessons on job interviewing skills, career planning and networking.  Inherently, participants will be exposed to an array of career opportunities across McDonald's, helping to build a stronger pipeline for diverse talent at the company.

"The McLendon Foundation has worked tirelessly over the last year to build a strong foundation for the Minority Leadership Initiative and the program has made a difference within the lives of many Future Leaders, ambassadors and college athletics as a whole," said Adrien Harraway, Director of the McLendon Foundation and Vice President of NACDA.  "With the support of McDonald's, the MLI will continue to have a positive impact on campus communities across the country, providing access and opportunity to deserving minority candidates."

In the program, Future Leaders receive career exposure working in college athletics departments while also learning the importance of interviewing, networking, decision making, leadership and career planning.

The second cohort of the McLendon Minority Leadership Initiative is currently underway and accepting applications. More information regarding the MLI and its corporate partnership with McDonald's can be found at MinorityLeaders.org.

Brandon Tierney;

“With college kids, I always try to illuminate positives. That will never change. Plenty of St. John’s teams have had talent over the years. But the program was never built for SUSTAINED success. The synergy between University President, AD and HC is real. It is palpable.”

Van is making up for all the other local staff that we hyped but didn't pan out for whatever reason.

That was a really good read.

I'm just patiently waiting for us to make a tournament run this year, before I blow up ole Jeff on twitter.  Dude was having a huge fit and bashing CMA like crazy during the hire.  We already had a back and forth during that time, I fully expect to be blocked by him come this March.  I can't stand guys like him, they go out of their way to bash people and try to degrade them, then when they are very wrong, don't even have the balls to admit it and apologize.

Best thing we get with Mike Anderson is consistency.  It has taken a little while for him to land “his” talent but now the ball has started rolling.  Our teams will never be out of shape and we won’t lose because we are unprepared.  I have no doubt that we will consistently be a team that nobody wants to play moving forward, and I expect the talent to keep getting better and make some big runs in coming years.  The cherry on top is that CMA has actually managed to build this team with a bunch good  of local players, which most others failed to do.  He’s got buy-in from all the local programs and AAU teams that kid to his integrity as well as good, non-flashy local hires who are finally in their best positions to be successful.  Hope we have cma for at least another 10 years and we can retire him from the game with some huge SJU successes.

Having a good AD is also a contributing factor to this program moving in the right direction.

Agree. Can’t be overstated.  Cragg was a huge hire for us and the reason Mike Anderson is here.  Our woes were partially caused by an administration who thought they were good enough without a real AD and would dabble in athletics.  It was an epic fail.  Keep Mike Cragg happy and we will be fine.

I make it a point to @ and quote-tweet Goodman every chance I get.  Will continue to do it until he mans up and gives credit where it's due.

Agree on your points re: Goodman- but that his schtick... as are a lot of commentators/media personalities. They make it their goal to be divisive to get people feeling a certain way. Had he just said- "think they should have gone in a different direction"... he prob wouldnt have you guys as an audience. Any attention is good in media... otherwise, youre irrelevant.

Not I, but he is one of many good SJU fans on the bird app

CMA re: Posh

"Oh, I think Posh can take it to another level. I think he'll have a good year, he'll be one of the top assist guys in our league. That's what a young guy like that has to be, he's got to be able to create and make other guys better and I think he will do that."

TRANSFERS SET TO MAKE AN IMPACT

During the off-season, Anderson used the transfer portal to add Joel Soriano (Fordham), Aaron Wheeler (Purdue), Stef Smith (Vermont), Montez Mathis (Rutgers) and Tareq Coburn (Hofstra). “We got some guys from winning programs,” Anderson said. “Stef Smith from Vermont, he brings a great work ethic to the table. Montez Mathis came from Rutgers, used to winning, and I love his toughness and his grit. He’ll be a great defensive player and can score. Aaron Wheeler comes from a winning program and is hungry. Tareq, he’s a guy that we got late and I think people are going to be in for a treat with him and what he brings to the table “And then you talk about Joel, he gives us something we haven’t had, a guy with size and a great pair of hands. Really a great passer, gives us a presence on the block.
