Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

Seriously, if you've met CMA for ten minutes, you immediately feel he is the real deal as a person, and is as authentic as they come.   Only a handful of guys have that quality.  Wright def has it, and so does CMA.   Good things to follow.

Been mentioned before but the coaches not only respect the work he's done but they see kids improving under him. Questions about his style were warranted at first but his resume allotted him the opportunity to show these schools/programs that he can do the job.

Besides the obvious, Wusu was brought up as a kid who the staff targeted bc he did a lot of things well. Everyone wants a scorer but Anderson wants a guy who can do other things to impact the game.  Was told that it's impactful when a HS kid turns on fox or FS1 and sees local kids they know, are friends with and played w having success.

speaking of Wusu, it's not a coincidence Anderson has him in at the end. He trusts him but he also knows that the experience he's getting now will do wonders later.

Some very powerful local AAU/HS coaches have been very vocal about how impressed they are w Coach Anderson...

This is one of the most important posts I have seen on this board in a long time.  If these coaches start funneling their top kids to St Johns????????????????   WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting JSJ. This was an excellent interview. I love how humble CMA is and the positive attitude that he exudes. I wish every recruit can hear him talk. He's the kind of coach I would have loved to play for.

BT has always been a staunch supporter of St John's basketball. I appreciate his effort to sing our praises at every opportunity.

Once CMA fills the roster with more kids who can impose physicality vs. having it imposed on them, we will take off.

Mike Anderson is the heavy favorite to win Big East Coach of the Year
There doesn’t appear to be a close second. After surrendering 97 points in a loss at Creighton on Jan. 9th, St. John’s season has completely turned around and that’s a credit to Anderson. The Red Storm have now won eight of their last 10 games thanks to a relentless pace, a burgeoning bench, and two all-conference players in Posh Alexander and Julian Champagnie. For the first time in a long time, St. John’s program seems like it’s legitimately stable. That’s because of Anderson. The veteran coach has never had a losing season during his career and has the Red Storm in position to reach the NCAA Tournament in just his second year in Queens.

Love the lines above from the college hoops story Paultzman posted. Reinforcement from an ooutside source of an opinion many posters here have expressed.

Of course, only time will tell but good things Coach has done are being noticed.

And I love his sideline demeanor.  CMA is never in the face of a referee or a player.  He is largely expressionless during the highs and lows of the game, and the players are exuding that on the court as well.  This is a real TEAM of good kids led by a good coach and even a better person (from what I have heard).  We should be rallying around the turnaround in the program and school, led by a President who sees the mbb team as a "billboard" for the university, an excellent AD and now coach who is attracting the right type of kids.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Agree completely about demeanor during a game, not too high when things are going good, not too low when they are not, that has to give the kids the same feeling.
Now if he can get Moore to relax, like him, when IM dunks, I'd be a little happier. I don't think it has hurt us but I don't want it to in the future.

If we get to 10-11 conference wins this season... Mike A has to be the Big East coach of the year right???

we were picked 9th preseason and have an opportunity to finish 3rd-5th

4 games to go and we have to be considered leader at moment for:
Coach of the year - CMA
Rookie of the year - Posh
Defensive player of the year - Posh
6th man of the year - Moore

Champ will probably get screwed but if he doesn’t make 1st team it’s criminal.

I really don't care too much about selective accolades, although they are nice.   If the team accomplishes the goal they had before they took the balls out - getting an NCAA bid - everything else will be gravy.

The first time I met Mike, we were speaking about the upcming first season.   He is a very direct communicator, and doesn't commit nearly as much coachspeak as other guys.   So, I said to him, "This is going to be a rough year.  I'm guessing maybe 5 or 6 conference wins."  He clearly didn't like that, and bristling said, "Well, we'll see about that."    The guy had a pretty thin roster, and he wasn't giving in or giving up to anything,   He never had excuses when we lost, never got too high when we won.

That conversation was a great forecaster of his approach this season.   At 1-5, 2-6, he wasn't throwing in the towel.   I once asked Lavin in Charlotte the day of the NCAAs how D'Angelo's shoulder was feeling, and how does that affect the team.   He launched into a 5 minute overview of not having Sampson or Harkless and how good the team would have been with them.   He was right, but it was just defense.  Anderson has none of that.  He's played the hand he hand he was dealt, and man, if he plays cards the way he coaches, I'm never ever going to sit down at a poker table with him.   He's gotten about as much out of each player as anyone could reasonably expect.

Now let these guys take care of business, and hopefully we end up in Indianapolis.

hold on guys.... what about the lack of 5*....? surely a coach cant be named COY without 5* recruits...... :)

After watching Champ and Posh play it makes you really question the hs rankings.

Don't think there is anything to worry about with Champ making 1st team All BE as he leads conference in scoring and averages 7 rebounds.

I don't normally care too much about the accolades either... however Anderson caught so much shit from fans and posters during the offseason for recruiting and things like that...

him winning Big East COY like 6 months later... well thatd just be sweet

Agreed. The scouting services were way off on Champagnie and for Posh. Posh had lots of NYC buzz early on in his HS career and than injuries and lack of high profile HS games really plummeted his national ranking. Glad we landed both city kids

Add Wusu to that as well.  Is there a team in the league that wouldn't want him now?  Seton Hall is a top 5 team in the league, and Wusu would get pretty sizeable minutes for them because the bench is thin.
